While many health-care issues and technological solutions are viewed locally, developing new technological solutions might benefit from lessons learned globally. The aim of this study was to develop a shared international research agenda of health-care ICT, applied to rehabilitation and daily living support. This study was focused on sensor technology and social robots used for supporting older persons in the Netherlands (Amsterdam) and Japan (Tokyo).

Acute effects of resonance frequency breathing on cardiovascular regulation.

Physiol Rep

November 2019

School of Health Sciences, Department of Health and Medical Sciences, Swinburne University of Technology, Hawthorn, Victoria, Australia.

Acute slow breathing may have beneficial effects on cardiovascular regulation by affecting hemodynamics and the autonomic nervous system. Whether breathing at the resonance frequency (RF), a breathing rate that maximizes heart rate oscillations, induces differential effects to that of slow breathing is unknown. We compared the acute effects of breathing at either RF and RF + 1 breaths per minute on muscle sympathetic nervous activity (MSNA) and baroreflex function.

Research Centre of Applied and Preventive Cardiovascular Medicine, University of Turku, Turku, FINLAND.

Introduction: Physical activity (PA) has been suggested to protect against old-age cognitive deficits. However, the independent role of childhood/youth PA for adulthood cognitive performance is unknown. This study investigated the association between PA from childhood to adulthood and midlife cognitive performance.

Background: Hemodialysis patients in Japan are aging, but the influence of lifestyle factors on EuroQoL 5-Dimension 5-Level (EQ-5D-5 L) scores in older hemodialysis patients is unclear. This study aimed to measure health-related quality of life using the EQ-5D-5 L for older hemodialysis patients and to identify the lifestyle factors affecting EQ-5D-5 L scores in Japan.

Methods: Outpatients aged 65 years or older who had been receiving maintenance hemodialysis for more than 5 years were selected to determine their EQ-5D-5 L scores.

Retinal vasculopathy with cerebral leukodystrophy (RVCL) is a rare autosomal dominant systemic microvascular disease. Neurological disorders and visual disturbance are highlighted as manifestations of RVCL; however, there are few reports focused on nephropathy. Herein, we describe detailed renal histopathological findings in a daughter and father with RVCL, proven by TREX1 genetic analysis.

Background And Purpose: To establish and validate diagnostic criteria for adult-onset leukoencephalopathy with axonal spheroids and pigmented glia (ALSP) due to colony-stimulating factor 1 receptor (CSF1R) mutation.

Methods: We developed diagnostic criteria for ALSP based on a recent analysis of the clinical characteristics of ALSP. These criteria provide 'probable' and 'possible' designations for patients who do not have a genetic diagnosis.

The kidney is a major target organ for systemic amyloidosis, which results in proteinuria and an elevated serum creatinine level. The clinical manifestations and precursor proteins of amyloid A (AA) and light-chain (AL) amyloidosis are different, and the renal damage due to amyloid deposition also seems to differ. The purpose of this study was to clarify haw the difference in clinical features between AA and AL amyloidosis are explained by the difference in the amount and distribution of amyloid deposition in the renal tissues.

Introduction: Acute infections lead to significant alterations in metabolic regulation including lipids and lipoproteins, which play a central role in the host immune response. In this regard, several studies have investigated the role of lipid levels as a marker of infection severity and prognosis.

Scope Of Review: We review here the role of lipids in immune response and the potential mechanisms underneath.

Faculty of Health Sciences, Institute of Medical, Pharmaceutical and Health Sciences, Kanazawa University, 5-11-80, Kodatsuno, Kanazawa-shi, Ishikawa 920-0942 Japan.

Background: To overcome the shortage of medical care delivery in the rapidly aging Japanese society, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare in 2010 started to train the nurses to be able to conduct the specified medical acts. The Japanese Nursing Association conducted the educational program to train the wound, ostomy, and continence nurses for the specified medical act of wound care. However, the difference between wound, ostomy, and continence nurses who conducted the medical act and those who did not was not clear.

Background And Purpose: The clinical characteristics of colony stimulating factor 1 receptor (CSF1R) related adult-onset leukoencephalopathy with axonal spheroids and pigmented glia (ALSP) have been only partially elucidated.

Methods: Clinical data from CSF1R mutation carriers who had been seen at our institutions or reported elsewhere were collected and analysed using a specific investigation sheet to standardize the data.

Results: In all, 122 cases from 90 families with CSF1R mutations were identified.

Adult-onset leukoencephalopathy with axonal spheroids and pigmented glia is a rare neurodegenerative disease resulting from mutations in the colony stimulating factor 1 receptor gene. Accurate diagnosis can be difficult because the associated clinical and MR imaging findings are nonspecific. We present 9 cases with intracranial calcifications distributed in 2 brain regions: the frontal white matter adjacent to the anterior horns of the lateral ventricles and the parietal subcortical white matter.

Observing small changes (SCs) at specific sites is a new form of managing changes in position. We investigated SCs at specific sites considering interface pressure, contact area, body alignment and physical sensation in nine healthy female adults and evaluated SCs using the air mattress that was divided into six cells (A-F). Thirty-three SC combinations at one or several sites were evaluated.

Hemodialysis patients in Japan are aging and thus more patients need support for attending hemodialysis facilities. This study aimed to clarify how dialysis patients utilize the services covered by Japan's public long-term care insurance (LTCI) system. This cross-sectional study was based on LTCI data of March 31, 2009, the latest available data provided by Niigata City, located on the northwest coast of Honshu.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the factors contributing to pulse wave velocity (PWV) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. We focused on tumor necrosis factor (TNF) including soluble TNF receptors (sTNF-R1, sTNF-R2) in this study because TNF seems to be associated with the progression of atherosclerosis and because the relationships between PWV and TNF were not yet examined in type 2 diabetic patients. Univariate regression analyses showed that PWV was positively correlated with age (r=0.

Measurements of MTF and SNR(f) using a subtraction method in MRI.

Phys Med Biol

August 2002

Department of Radiological Technology, School of Health Sciences. Faculty of Medicine, Kanazawa University, Ishikawa, Japan.

A method was developed for accurate measurement of the modulation transfer function (MTF) and signal-to-noise ratio in the spatial frequency domain (SNR(f)) of magnetic resonance images (MRI). The MTF was calculated from the complex images of a line object which were obtained by the subtraction of two separately acquired data sets of a specially designed phantom with a sliding sheet. Moreover, the SNR(f) was calculated from the MTF and Wiener spectrum, both of which were determined using the same phantom configuration.
