The study aimed to assess the total prevalence of functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID), and separately, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) among adults and to determine their potential association with fructose consumption. Data from the Hellenic National Nutrition and Health Survey were included (3798 adults; 58·9 % females). Information regarding FGID symptomatology was assessed using self-reported physician diagnosis questionnaires the reliability of which were screened using the ROME III, in a sample of the population.

Background: Because of the increased burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD), country specific risk prediction models to forecast future CVD events and mortality are recommended, for primary prevention. The aim of this study was to recalibrate the HellenicSCORE, to accurately estimate the 10-year risk CVD mortality of Greek adults.
Methods: Data from the Hellenic National Nutrition and Health Survey (HNNHS) were used (N = 1012; 37.

Objectives: Globally, vitamin D intake from food and supplements is low, consistent with the high prevalence of low serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration. The aims of this study were to assess vitamin D intake and major relevant food contributors among Greek adults and to propose subsequent policies for intervention.
Methods: Vitamin D from diet and supplements was estimated in adults (≥19 y of age) from two 24-h recalls using the Automated Multiple-Pass Method (vitamin D from food intake) and a drug and supplement questionnaire (vitamin D supplements).

Background/objectives: Low/moderate alcohol consumption seems to be protective against cardiovascular disease (CVD). This study aimed to investigate the association of wine/beer consumption with the 10-year CVD incidence.
Subjects/methods: During 2001-2002, 3042 CVD-free adults consented to participate in the ATTICA study; of them 2583 completed the 10-year follow-up (85% participation rate), but precise information about fatal/nonfatal CVD incidence (myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, cardiac ischemia, heart failure, chronic arrhythmias, and stroke) was available in 2020 participants (overall retention rate 66%).
Background: We hypothesized that the ability to sustain maximal inspiratory pressure (SPImax) over time as a measure of work capacity may be more severely affected than inspiratory muscle strength (PImax) in patients with heart failure (HF).
Methods: We retrospectively investigated eighty patients with HF, NYHA II/III/ ambulatoryIV and a (mean±SD) LVEF 27±8%, and compared them to 25 healthy subjects (HS). During a maximal inspiratory manoeuvre from residual volume (RV) to total lung capacity, PImax was measured as the maximum mouth pressure at RV, inspiratory contraction time (ICT) as the time from RV to end of inspiration and SPImax as the area under a pressure-time curve using an electronic pressure manometer with designed-purpose software (Trainair(®), Project Electronics Ltd.
