Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates CUDC-101, a multitarget inhibitor, and its ability to improve radiation response in breast cancer when combined with proton and X-ray irradiation, with a focus on triple-negative breast cancer cell lines.
  • - Results showed that CUDC-101 enhanced sensitivity to radiation, increased apoptosis, and caused G2/M cell cycle arrest, particularly in the aggressive MDA-MB-231 cell line.
  • - The findings suggest that CUDC-101 could be an effective option for treating triple-negative breast cancer, either on its own or alongside radiation therapies.

Background: Exclusive breastfeeding is vital for the optimal development of infants, yet the practice of using infant formula has become increasingly prevalent. While many studies globally investigate factors affecting breastfeeding, there is a scarcity of research focusing on marginalized groups, particularly the Roma community. This study seeks to compare the breastfeeding rates of Roma and non-Roma mothers upon discharge from a maternity hospital in Greece.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to investigate whether maternal egg consumption during lactation can help prevent egg allergies in infants by promoting immune tolerance.
  • Researchers collected data from mothers on their egg intake, breastfeeding practices, and infants' health, particularly looking at instances of eczema and allergies at 6 and 12 months.
  • Results showed that maternal egg consumption did not significantly affect allergy development, but infants with eczema at 6 months had a higher risk of developing egg allergies by 12 months, highlighting the need to reduce skin exposure to allergens.

November 2024

Vocational High School of Health Care Services, Department of Medical Services and Techniques, Kırıkkale University, Kırıkkale, Yahşihan, Turkey.

Article Synopsis
  • Pancreatic carcinoma is a highly aggressive cancer with low survival rates due to late diagnosis and poor treatment responses, prompting research into new diagnostic and treatment methods, including gene therapy.
  • The study aimed to silence the KRAS gene in pancreatic cancer cells using a combination of small interfering RNA (siRNA) and varying concentrations of gold nanoparticles (AuNP) to enhance therapeutic effects.
  • Results indicated that the optimal concentration of AuNP was 0.125 mg/ml, with siRNA/AuNP complexes showing over 90% cell viability and statistically significant increases in cell proliferation compared to controls after 72 and 96 hours.

Introduction: Hospital admissions often result in functional decline for patients with dementia, yet evidence on the impact of cancer treatments in this population during hospitalization is limited. We aimed to examine the association between dementia and functional decline after cancer treatment in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Materials And Methods: A total of 30,213 patients aged 65 years or older hospitalized for NSCLC treatment, from a dataset of 366 acute care hospitals in Japan, were eligible for this study.

October 2024

Department Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, School of Health Care Sciences, Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University, Pretoria.

Background:  Hyperbilirubinaemia is a contributing condition to the prevalence of neonatal hearing loss. Because of its pathophysiology, the use of Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) and Automated Auditory Brainstem Response (AABR) testing is essential in diagnosing hearing loss. Two-tier screening models are typically used in developing world contexts; however, a combined approach to testing (using both tests) should be used for early detection.
