Background: The cumulative effect of repetitive subconcussive head impacts on neurocognitive function during youth contact sports remains largely unknown. There is a paucity of literature evaluating cumulative helmet forces over a season and their correlation with preseason and postseason cognitive performance tasks such as the King-Devick test (KDT).
Hypothesis: Higher helmet forces recorded throughout a 10-week, 10-game youth football season would correlate with slower performance on postseason KDT.
Transplantation

Division of Infectious Diseases, Mayo Clinic, Phoenix, AZ.
Background: Solid organ transplant recipients are at risk of severe coccidioidomycosis and are given prophylaxis to mitigate the risk. Patients with seropositive testing typically receive lifelong prophylaxis; currently, this prophylaxis strategy includes patients who are positive only for IgM by enzyme immunoassay (EIA-IgM-only), although this result may be falsely positive.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective study at a large-volume transplant center in an endemic coccidioidomycosis region to compare outcomes of non-lung transplant recipients who were seropositive for Coccidioides but discontinued prophylaxis (case patients) to outcomes of patients who continued prophylaxis (controls).

This case report describes a 29-year-old patient with cerebral palsy whose mother, for safety reasons, requested that before extubation in the postanesthesia care unit, her son be transferred from the padded stretcher to his personal motorized wheelchair. Using a sling lift, we safely transferred the anesthetized, intubated patient from a supine position to an upright sitting position. Although sling lifts are often used in critical care and rehabilitation environments, use in the perioperative space is rare.

Background: Current guidelines recommend empiric antibiotic therapy for patients who require hospitalization for community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). We sought to determine whether clinical, imaging or laboratory features in patients hospitalized for CAP in whom PCR is positive for a respiratory virus enable exclusion of bacterial coinfection so that antibiotics can be withheld.
Methods: For this prospective study, we selected patients in whom an etiologic diagnosis was likely to be reached, namely those who provided a high-quality sputum sample at or shortly after admission, and in whom PCR was done to test for a respiratory virus.
Placenta
January 2025
Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, USA.
Introduction: The reported gross and histopathologic changes in the placenta associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection are heterogeneous. We sought to summarize placental histopathologic findings from pregnancies affected by SARS-CoV-2 infection according to timing of infection and symptom severity.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy who had deliveries at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, from April 2020 through June 2021.

We developed a simple quantifiable scoring system that predicts aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) mortality, delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI), and modified Rankin scale (mRS) outcomes using readily available SAH admission data with SAH volume (SAHV) measured on computed tomography (CT). We retrospectively analyzed a cohort of 277 patients with aSAH admitted at our Comprehensive Stroke Center at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, between January 5, 2012, and February 24, 2022. We developed a mathematical radiographic model SAHV that measures basal cisternal SAH blood volume using a derivation of the ABC/2 ellipsoid formula (A = width/thickness, B = length, C = vertical extension) on noncontrast CT, which we previously demonstrated is comparable to pixel-based manual segmentation on noncontrast CT.

Background: Ischemic heart disease is a leading cause of death globally with a disproportionate burden in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Natural language processing (NLP) allows for data enrichment in large datasets to facilitate key clinical research. We used NLP to assess gender differences in symptoms and management of patients hospitalized with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) at Aga Khan University Hospital-Pakistan.

There is a persistent underrepresentation of women and multiple ethnic minority groups among medical school and residency applicants and trainees, particularly in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R). There is limited information on what causes these demographic disparities in PM&R and on strategies to increase interest in the field. To address this gap and improve early recruitment efforts, the authors conducted the first-ever national survey to gather information on pre-medical students' perceived barriers to medical school admissions, career interests, perceptions of PM&R, and strategies to increase interest in PM&R.

Aims: Define the relationship between N-terminal atrial natriuretic peptide (NT-ANP) levels and incident metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes mellitus ('metabolic disease') in healthy adults and develop a risk prediction score.
Materials And Methods: Retrospective cohort study of Olmsted County Heart Function Study participants, a random sampling of county residents aged 45 years and older (n = 2042). Clinical data were collected during enrolment between 1997 and 2000 and upon follow-up 4 years later.
Background: A multidisciplinary approach improves guideline-directed medical therapy in systolic heart failure (HF), but its efficacy in patients with HF due to cardiac sarcoidosis is unreported.
Methods And Results: In a retrospective cohort study, we reviewed 848 patients from our institutional cardiac sarcoidosis clinics, identifying those with a cardiac sarcoidosis diagnosis, HF (left ventricular ejection fraction <50%) at index evaluation, and echocardiograms within 90 days and 11 to 36 months. Patients were stratified by participation in a pharmacist-led medication therapy management (MTM) program for guideline-directed medical therapy optimization (MTM versus non-MTM [NMTM]) without randomization.
