Ischemia-reperfusion injuries (IRI) across various organs and tissues, along with sepsis, significantly contribute to the progression of critical illnesses. These conditions disrupt the balance of inflammatory mediators and signaling pathways, resulting in impaired physiological functions in human tissues and organs. Ferroptosis, a distinct form of programmed cell death, plays a pivotal role in regulating tissue damage and modulating inflammatory responses, thereby influencing the onset and progression of severe illnesses.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a metabolic disease that can lead to complications affecting multiple organs, including the liver. Gegen Qinlian Decoction (GQD) has demonstrated considerable efficacy in the management of T2DM and its complications in accordance with the tenets of modern Chinese medicine. However, the molecular mechanism by which GQD alleviates diabetic liver injury is unclear.

We developed a simple quantifiable scoring system that predicts aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) mortality, delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI), and modified Rankin scale (mRS) outcomes using readily available SAH admission data with SAH volume (SAHV) measured on computed tomography (CT). We retrospectively analyzed a cohort of 277 patients with aSAH admitted at our Comprehensive Stroke Center at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, between January 5, 2012, and February 24, 2022. We developed a mathematical radiographic model SAHV that measures basal cisternal SAH blood volume using a derivation of the ABC/2 ellipsoid formula (A = width/thickness, B = length, C = vertical extension) on noncontrast CT, which we previously demonstrated is comparable to pixel-based manual segmentation on noncontrast CT.

Purpose: The difference in prognosis between invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) and invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) is still controversial in the academic community. Resolving this controversy can help to more accurately determine patients' prognosis, provide further personalized treatment, alleviate unnecessary psychological burden for some patients, and provide direction for further fundamental research.

Patients And Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using the SEER Research Plus Data 8 Registries, Nov 2021 sub (1978-2019), including female breast cancer patients diagnosed with ILC or IDC between 2010 and 2015.

Anti-seizure medications and deep brain stimulation are widely used therapies to treat seizures; however, both face limitations such as resistance and the unpredictable nature of seizures. Recent advancements, including responsive neural stimulation and on-demand drug release, have been developed to address these challenges. However, a gap remains, as electrical stimulation provides only transient effects while medication has a delayed onset.

Heart failure (HF) is a complex and debilitating condition characterized by the heart's inability to pump blood effectively, leading to significant morbidity and mortality. The abnormality of immune response is a key factor in the progression of HF, contributing to adverse cardiac remodeling and dysfunction. Exosomal microRNAs (miRNAs) play a pivotal role in regulating gene expression and cellular function, which are integral to the crosstalk between cardiac and immune cells, influencing immune cell functions, such as macrophage polarization, T cell activity, and cytokine production, thereby modulating various pathological processes of HF, such as inflammation, fibrosis, and cardiac dysfunction.

Conventional echocardiography used to assess volumes of the left ventricle (LV) and left atrium (LA) along with mitral regurgitation grade is routine in studies before and after transcatheter edge-to-edge mitral valve repair (Mitral TEER). Previous studies focus on LV parameter changes and comparison of the functions before and a few months following Mitral TEER implantation, as well as LA reverse remodeling, by assessing LV volumes. However, less is known regarding LA strain changes in the early phase after the procedure.

Uterine leiomyomata (fibroids, UFs) are common, benign tumors in females, having an estimated prevalence of up to 80%. They are fibrous masses growing within the myometrium leading to chronic symptoms like dysmenorrhea, abnormal uterine bleeding, anemia, severe pelvic pain, and infertility. Hypertension (HTN) is a common risk factor for UFs, though less prevalent in premenopausal individuals.

There is a persistent underrepresentation of women and multiple ethnic minority groups among medical school and residency applicants and trainees, particularly in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R). There is limited information on what causes these demographic disparities in PM&R and on strategies to increase interest in the field. To address this gap and improve early recruitment efforts, the authors conducted the first-ever national survey to gather information on pre-medical students' perceived barriers to medical school admissions, career interests, perceptions of PM&R, and strategies to increase interest in PM&R.
