Background: Infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV) and viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus (VHSV) are highly contagious, pathogenic Novirhabdoviruses affecting fish and are thusly notifiable diseases with the World Organization for Animal Health. This study assessed the relative capacities of IHNV and VHSV genes to modulate host general transcription and explores the abilities of specific IHNV genes to interfere with the interferon pathway in heterogenous teleost cell-lines.

Over the past decades, titanium dioxide nanoparticles (n-TiO) have been extensively used in several industrial applications and the manufacture of novel consumer products. Although strict regulations have been put in place to limit their release into the aquatic environment, these nanoparticles can still be found at elevated levels within the environment, which can result in toxic effects on exposed organisms and has possible implications in term of public health. Bivalve mollusks are a unique and ideal group of shellfish for the study and monitoring the aquatic pollution by n-TiO because of their filter-feeding behaviour and ability to accumulate toxicants in their tissues.

Viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus (VHSV) is one of the most deadly infectious fish pathogens, posing a serious threat to the aquaculture industry and freshwater ecosystems worldwide. Previous work showed that VHSV sub-genotype IVb suppresses host innate immune responses, but the exact mechanism by which VHSV IVb inhibits antiviral response remains incompletely characterized. As with other novirhabdoviruses, VHSV IVb contains a unique and highly variable nonvirion (NV) gene, which is implicated in viral replication, virus-induced apoptosis and regulating interferon (IFN) production.

Female mate choice has strong experimental support as a diversifying force in the speciation of the haplochromine cichlid fishes of Lake Malaŵi, Africa. Somewhat less understood is the role that male-male aggression might have played in the evolution of new species of these fishes. In the rock-dwelling haplochromines of Lake Malaŵi, primarily territory-holding males successfully court females; by determining which males gain territories, male-male aggression could support speciation by excluding less-fit males from the breeding population.

An integrated photo-bioelectrochemical system (IPB) for wastewater treatment combines a microbial fuel cell with an algal bioreactor, eliminating requirements for aeration, promoting electricity generation, remediating nutrients and producing algal biomass for conversion into biofuel or other bioproducts. To examine strategies for improving IPB functions of electrochemical output and nutrient removal efficiency, this study tested effects of cathode bacterial inoculation and nitrogen loading on cathode microbial community and IPB performance. Temperature increases during dielectrophoresis (DEP) can affect the response of biological entities, and ignoring the effect can result in misleading analysis. The heating mechanism of a DEP device is typically considered to be the result of Joule heating and is overlooked without an appropriate analysis.
