Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), often triggered by endothelial barrier disruption through vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), is a leading cause of blindness. This study investigated the inhibitory effects of phenolic compounds on VEGF-induced endothelial cell proliferation, migration, angiogenesis, and permeability using human retinal microvascular endothelial cells (hRECs). Thirty-seven polyphenolic compounds were selected from various databases based on their antioxidant properties, abundance in food, and solubility.

In this work, a series of magnetic chitosan (CS) supported-metal catalysts were successfully prepared for the acetalization of benzaldehyde (BzH) with ethylene glycol (EG). The structural properties of the catalysts were characterized by TEM, FT-IR, XRD, XPS, TGA-DTG, SEM-EDX and VSM. The results showed that FeO-CS-Cu(20 %) catalyst possessed the best catalytic efficiency in all prepared catalysts due to its suitable acidity and excellent stability when they were utilized in the acetalization reaction to generate benzaldehyde glycol acetal.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) stands as a chronic inflammatory intestinal disease. This study aimed to explore a sustained-release strategy to alleviate DSS-induced colitis in mice using polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) encapsulating an alkaloid, isoliensinine (ISO). The drug delivery platform, termed "Saloplastics (SAL)", was prepared by fabrication of PECs through the solid-liquid phase separation of sodium caseinate (SC) and ε-polylysine (EPL), followed by centrifugation to yield compact structures.

Background: Nipah virus (NiV) is a zoonotic pathogen that poses a significant threat because of its wide host range, multiple transmission modes, high transmissibility, and high mortality rates, affecting both human health and animal husbandry. In this study, we developed a one-step reverse transcription droplet digital PCR (RT-ddPCR) assay that targets the N gene of NiV.
Results: Our RT-ddPCR assay exhibited remarkable sensitivity, with a lower limit of detection of 6.

Electronic nose is a bionic technology that uses sensor arrays and pattern recognition algorithms to mimic the human olfactory system. This study developed a thermal desorption-photoionization ion mobility-electronic nose (TD-PIM-Nose) system, employing thermal desorption for direct sampling and humidity control, with a photoionization ion mobility tube as virtual sensor array for component separation and detection, and pattern recognition algorithms for signal processing to differentiate and identify samples. Furthermore, it was applied to assess four quality grades of Daqu samples ("Excellent+", "Excellent", "Grade I", and "Grade II") determined by the Check-All-That-Apply (CATA) method.

We analyzed the biological and genome characteristics of a phage infecting enteroinvasive (EIEC), aiming to provide resources and a reference for the prevention and treatment of EIEC. With the EIEC preserved in our laboratory as the host bacterium, one strain of phage was isolated from the effluent sample from a chicken farm in Huzhou, Zhejiang and named ΦEP1. The titer, optimal multiplicity of infection, one-step growth curve, temperature, pH value, chloroform and bile salt sensitivity of ΦEP1 were determined by the double-layer agar plate method.

Currently, most studies focus on the functions of probiotic-fermented milk, whereas there are relatively few studies on the function of postbiotic-fermented milk in relieving constipation. In this study, we aimed to assess the modulation of constipation symptoms and its mechanism of action by different concentrations of Lacticaseibacillus paracasei-fermented milk as a postbiotic in a loperamide hydrochloride-induced constipation model in BALB/c mice. By comparing the relevant indexes, colon histological analysis, gene expression level, and intestinal flora structure in the constipation model of mice, we found that high and ultra-high doses of fermented milk can effectively relieve constipation.
