Novel hydrogel-based multifunctional systems prepared utilizing photocrosslinking and freeze-drying processes (PhotoCross/Freeze-dried) dedicated for bone tissue regeneration are presented. Fabricated materials, composed of methacrylated gelatin, chitosan, and chondroitin sulfate, possess interesting features including bioactivity, biocompatibility, as well as antibacterial activity. Importantly, their degradation and swellability might be easily tuned by playing with the biopolymeric content in the photocrosllinked systems.

The full understanding of molecular mechanisms of cell differentiation requires a holistic view. Here we combine label-free FTIR and Raman hyperspectral imaging with data mining to detect the molecular cell composition enabling noninvasive monitoring of cell differentiation and identifying biochemical heterogeneity. Mouse adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AD-MSCs) undergoing adipogenesis were followed by Raman and FT-IR imaging, Oil Red, and immunofluorescence.

Apoptosis has traditionally been regarded as the desired cell death pathway activated by chemotherapeutic drugs due to its controlled and non-inflammatory nature. However, recent discoveries of alternative cell death pathways have paved the way for immune-stimulatory treatment approaches in cancer. Ferroptosis (dependent on iron) and cuproptosis (dependent on copper) hold promise for selective cancer cell targeting and overcoming drug resistance.

JUK-8 ([Zn(oba)(pip)], oba = 4,4'-oxybis(benzenedicarboxylate), pip = 4-pyridyl-functionalized benzene-1,3-dicarbohydrazide) is a hydrolytically stable flexible metal-organic framework. Owing to its unusual adsorptive properties, JUK-8 can be considered as a promising sensing material for construction of detectors of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in air. Quasi-equilibrated temperature-programmed desorption and adsorption (QE-TPDA) is a versatile method dedicated to characterization of porous materials.

Resistance to olaparib is the major obstacle in targeted therapy for ovarian cancer (OC) with poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitors (PARPis), prompting studies on novel combination therapies to enhance olaparib efficacy. Despite identifying various mechanisms, understanding how OC cells acquire PARPi resistance remains incomplete. This study investigated microRNA (miRNA) expression in olaparib-sensitive (PEO1, PEO4) and previously established olaparib-resistant OC cell lines (PEO1-OR) using high-throughput RT-qPCR and bioinformatic analyses.

Aureocin A53 is a peptide bacteriocin produced by an opportunistic pathogen Staphylococcus aureus strain A53. The spatial structure of aureocin, unlike its amino acid sequence, is similar to the bacteriocin BacSp222, which was recently found to have the ability to induce the inflammatory response in the host cells. The presented research aimed to verify such properties also for aureocin A53.

In this paper, we present a facile method of synthesis and modification of poly(glycidyl methacrylate) brushes with 6-aminofluorescein (6AF) molecules. Polymer brushes were obtained using surface-grafted atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) and functionalized in the presence of triethylamine (TEA) acting both as a reaction catalyst and an agent preventing aggregation of chromophores. Atomic force microscopy (AFM), FTIR, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to study the structure and formation of obtained photoactive platforms.

Tunable photoluminescence (PL) is one of the hot topics in current materials science, and research performed on the molecular phases is at the forefront of this field. We present the new (EtN)[Pt(bph)(CN)]⋅rez3⋅/HO (Pt2rez3) (bph=biphenyl-2,2'-diyl; rez3=3,3",5,5"-tetrahydroxy-1,1':4',1"-terphenyl, phenylene-1,4-diresorcinol coformer, a linear quaternary hydrogen bond donor) co-crystal salt based on the recently appointed promising [Pt(bph)(CN)] luminophore. Within the extended hydrogen-bonded subnetwork [Pt(bph)(CN)] complexes and rez3 coformer molecules form two types of contacts: the O-H⋅⋅⋅N ones in the equatorial plane of the complex and non-typical O-H⋅⋅⋅Pt ones along its axial direction.

Background: Symbiotic relationships with diverse microorganisms are crucial for many aspects of insect biology. However, while our understanding of insect taxonomic diversity and the distribution of insect species in natural communities is limited, we know much less about their microbiota. In the era of rapid biodiversity declines, as researchers increasingly turn towards DNA-based monitoring, developing and broadly implementing approaches for high-throughput and cost-effective characterization of both insect and insect-associated microbial diversity is essential.

Adenylate kinase (AK) plays a crucial role in the metabolic monitoring of cellular adenine nucleotide homeostasis by catalyzing the reversible transfer of a phosphate group between ATP and AMP, yielding two ADP molecules. By regulating the nucleotide levels and energy metabolism, the enzyme is considered a disease modifier and potential therapeutic target for various human diseases, including malignancies and inflammatory and neurodegenerative disorders. However, lacking approved drugs targeting AK hinders broad studies on this enzyme's pathological importance and therapeutic potential.

Aging is the most important risk factor for the development of cardiovascular diseases. Senescent cells release plethora of factors commonly known as the senescence-associated secretory phenotype, which can modulate the normal function of the vascular wall. It is currently not well understood if and how endothelial cell senescence can affect adventitial niche.

Protein cages that readily encapsulate active enzymes of interest present useful nanotools for delivery and catalysis, wherein those with programmable disassembly characteristics serve as particularly attractive platforms. Here, a general guest packaging system based on an artificial protein cage, TRAP-cage, the disassembly of which can be induced by the addition of reducing agents, is established. In this system, TRAP-cage with SpyCatcher moieties in the lumen is prepared using genetic modification of the protein building block and assembled into a cage structure with either monovalent gold ions or molecular crosslinkers.

Bird song is a crucial feature for mate choice and reproduction. Song can potentially communicate information related to the quality of the mate, through song complexity, structure or finer changes in syllable characteristics. It has been shown in zebra finches that those characteristics can be affected by various factors including motivation, hormone levels or extreme temperature.

Extracellular proteases are key factors contributing to the virulence of pathogenic fungi from the genus . Their proteolytic activities are crucial for extracting nutrients from the external environment, degrading host defenses, and destabilizing the internal balance of the human organism. Currently, the enzymes most frequently described in this context are secreted aspartic proteases (Saps).

A novel sample double dilution calibration method (SDDCM) and an automatic flow system with in-syringe reaction and spectrophotometric detection were developed for determining lithium in biological samples. The method is based on the reaction of lithium with Thorin in an alkaline medium and the signal was measured at 480 nm. The reaction was performed simultaneously for both standards and samples in three syringes of the automatic flow system.
