Psychobiology Graduate Program, School of Philosophy, Science and Literature of Ribeirão Preto, University of São Paulo, Ribeirão Preto, Brazil.

Professionals performing radiographic examinations are responsible for maintaining optimal image quality for accurate diagnoses. These professionals must competently execute techniques such as film manipulation and processing to minimize patient exposure to radiation. Improper performance by the professional and/or patient may result in a radiographic image of unsatisfactory quality that can also lead to a misdiagnosis and the development of an inadequate treatment plan.

Unlabelled: Oral cancer is a public health problem with high prevalence in the population. Local tumor control is best achieved by complete surgical resection with adequate margins. A disease-free surgical margin correlates with a lower rate of local recurrence and a higher rate of disease-free survival.

Article Synopsis
  • Benign tumours make up 60-80% of parotid neoplasms, with Warthin's tumour being the second most common, constituting about 15% of parotid epithelial tumours.
  • The study analyzed medical records of 100 patients who underwent surgery for Warthin's tumour, with 96% receiving subtotal parotidectomies; 62.3% experienced postoperative complications, primarily facial nerve dysfunction.
  • Both subtotal and total parotidectomy are effective treatments with no cases of recurrence, but total parotidectomy may carry a higher risk of complications like facial nerve dysfunction and Frey's syndrome compared to subtotal procedures.

Fatty acid synthase (FASN) is the biosynthetic enzyme responsible for the endogenous synthesis of fatty acids. It is downregulated in most normal cells, except in lipogenic tissues such as liver, lactating breast, fetal lung, and adipose tissue. Conversely, several human cancers, including head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC), overexpress FASN, which has been associated with poor prognosis and recently suggested as a metabolic oncoprotein.

This study was conducted to investigate how well cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) can detect simulated cavitary defects in condyles, and to test the influence of the reconstruction protocols. Defects were created with spherical diamond burs (numbers 1013, 1016, 3017) in superior and/or posterior surfaces of twenty condyles. The condyles were scanned, and cross-sectional reconstructions were performed with nine different protocols, based on slice thickness (0.

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, School of Dentistry of Piracicaba, State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), Avenida Limeira, 901, Caixa Postal 52, #191, Areião, 13414-903, Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil,

Introduction: The usage of mini anchors for the treatment of internal derangements of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is considered an innovative treatment, and it has presented excellent clinical results in the stabilization of the articular disc. This study aimed to evaluate, through mechanical tensile testing, the resistance of mini anchors for TMJ articular disc repositioning.

Materials And Methods: Ten thermoplastic polymer poly-ether-ether-ketone (PEEK) mini anchors were tested in artificial polyurethane blocks with a pullout test in a mechanical Instron™ machine, model 4411.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the activity of the ethanolic extract of geopropolis (EEGP) from Melipona scutellaris and its fractions on the modulation of neutrophil migration in the inflammatory process, and the participation of nitric oxide (NO) pathway, as well as to check the chemical profile of the bioactive fraction. EEGP and its aqueous fraction decreased neutrophil migration in the peritoneal cavity and also the interaction of leukocytes (rolling and adhesion) with endothelial cells. The levels of chemokines CXCL1/KC and CXCL2/MIP-2 were not altered after treatment with EEGP and the aqueous fraction.

Influence of endodontic irrigants on bond strength of a self-etching adhesive.

Aust Endod J

April 2011

Department of Restorative Dentistry, School of Dentistry of Piracicaba, State University of Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil.

The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the bond strength of a self-etching adhesive system to dentine irrigated with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), chlorhexidine solution (CX) and ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid (EDTA) by microtensile testing. Sixty human third molars were sectioned 3 mm below the occlusal level and then randomly divided into six groups: G1(control), without irrigant solution; G2, 1% NaOCl; G3, 1% NaOCl followed by the application of 17% EDTA; G4, 2% CX; G5, 2% CX followed by the application of 17% EDTA and G6, 17% EDTA. The specimens received the self-etching adhesive system were restored with composite resin, then sectioned and trimmed to obtain four hourglass-shaped slabs from each tooth.

Clinicopathological factors are predictors of distant metastasis from major salivary gland carcinomas.

Int J Oral Maxillofac Surg

May 2011

Department of Oral Diagnosis, School of Dentistry of Piracicaba, University of Campinas, Av. Limeira 901, Piracicaba, 13414-018, São Paulo, Brazil.

The risk of distant metastasis of salivary gland cancers has usually been associated with histological type, tumour size, and site. The aim of this study was to evaluate a series of patients with major salivary gland carcinomas in order to identify potential risk factors associated with distant metastasis. 255 patients treated for major salivary gland carcinoma in Brazil from 1953 to 2004 were reviewed.

The surface of gutta-percha cones was evaluated after using five different cutting methods, including a new TipSnip device. The gutta-percha cones were cut off using: 1) TipSnip, 2) a single cut with a scalpel blade using a gauge, 3) two cuts with a scalpel blade using a gauge, 4) a razor blade against a glass slab or 5) scissors. Samples were examined under stereomicroscopy and observed by three highly qualified evaluators.

Traumatic neuromas are characterized by the presence of pain, burning, or paresthesia, associated with a history of trauma, normally surgery, in the same site. In the oral cavity, the most commonly affected sites are the lip, tongue, and mental nerve area. Pressure on the suspected area usually provokes pain.

Overexpression of fatty acid synthase (FASN) and ErbB2 has been described in oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCC). FASN is the key lipogenic enzyme responsible for the endogenous synthesis of fatty acids and its expression can be regulated by ErbB2. The deubiquitinating enzyme (DUB) ubiquitin-specific protease 2a (USP2a) plays a critical role in prostate cancer cell survival by stabilizing the FASN protein.

Fatty acid synthase (FASN) is the enzyme responsible for the endogenous synthesis of the saturated fatty acid palmitate. In contrast to most normal cells, malignant cells depend on FASN activity for growth and survival. In fact, FASN is overexpressed in a variety of human cancers including cutaneous melanoma, in which its levels of expression are associated with a poor prognosis and depth of invasion.

As poor denture hygiene is related to Candida colonisation, disinfectant solutions have been proposed as an effective method of preventing denture stomatitis. This study assessed the efficacy of denture cleansers on Candida albicans and Candida glabrata adherence on denture liners. Another aim was to correlate materials' surface roughness (Ra) to Candida adherence.
