Objectives: While adverse events (AEs) are all too prevalent, their underlying causes are difficult to assess because they are often multifactorial. Standardizing the language of dental AEs is an important first step toward increasing patient safety for the dental patient.
Methods: We followed a multimodal approach building a dental AE inventory, which included a literature review; review of the MAUDE database; a cross-sectional, self-administered patient survey; focus groups; interviews with providers and domain experts; and chart reviews.

Department of Periodontology, Indiana University School of Dentistry, Indianapolis, Indiana, USA.
Objectives: The American Academy of Periodontology and the European Federation of Periodontology developed a new classification system for periodontal diseases in 2017. The next step in its widespread implementation involves training dental students to improve consistency in clinical decisions. This study conducted in 2020-2021 aimed to evaluate knowledge in periodontal diagnosis and treatment planning using the new classification, among first, second, third- and fourth-year dental students at Indiana University School of Dentistry (IUSD), University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston (UTSD), and University of Louisville School of Dentistry (ULSD).

Non-syndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate (NSCL/P) is a common, severe craniofacial malformation that imposes significant medical, psychosocial and financial burdens. NSCL/P is a multifactorial disorder with genetic and environmental factors playing etiologic roles. Currently, only 25% of the genetic variation underlying NSCL/P has been identified by linkage, candidate gene and genome-wide association studies.

Oral ulcers are lesions that occur due to disruption of epithelial integrity of the mucosa of the oral cavity. Intraoral ulcers are often associated with pain, redness, symptoms of discomfort, and blood hemorrhage. The etiology for many oral ulcers is local trauma, systemic health conditions, or medication; for other ulcers the cause is less clear.

Background: Longitudinal patient level data available in the electronic health record (EHR) allows for the development, implementation, and validations of dental quality measures (eMeasures).
Objective: We report the feasibility and validity of implementing two eMeasures. The eMeasures determined the proportion of patients receiving a caries risk assessment (eCRA) and corresponding appropriate risk-based preventative treatments for patients at elevated risk of caries (appropriateness of care [eAoC]) in two academic institutions and one accountable care organization, in the 2019 reporting year.

Introduction: Understanding the physicochemical and biological properties of endodontic sealers is important for endodontic treatment planning. This study evaluated the properties of EndoSequence BC Sealer HiFlow (BCH; Brasseler USA, Savannah, GA), EndoSequence BC Sealer (BC, Brasseler USA), and AH Plus (AHP; Dentsply DeTrey, Konstanz, Germany). The effect of temperature on the setting time and flow of these sealers was also evaluated.

Purpose: This multi-site study examined dental students' postgraduate plans and factors affecting them, perceptions of pathways with the best future, and whether those postgraduate plans changed during dental school.
Methods: An online survey was made available to all four dental classes (2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021) and advanced standing/international dental students at eight US dental schools. The survey questionnaire consisted of two parts: (1) 14 questions pertaining to demographic information and (2) 11 questions pertaining to career path choices and possible influencing factors.

Context: Postoperative pain control has been a common challenge to clinicians in endodontics.
Aims: This double-blind randomized clinical trial assessed the efficacy of clonidine added to lidocaine for postoperative pain following endodontic treatment of mandibular molars with symptomatic irreversible pulpitis (SIP).
Methods: One hundred participants with lower molars experiencing SIP were recruited and randomly assigned to two groups.

Unlabelled: Manufacturer instructions for 38% silver diamine fluoride (SDF) are limited to current FDA clearance for tooth desensitization. There is a need for instructions to provide best-practice recommendations for off-label use of SDF for caries prevention and arrest.
Methods: The authors considered existing clinical approaches to the use of 38% SDF at pH 10 for the prevention and arrest of active dental caries, in light of the best current evidence.

Mandatory attendance, particularly in didactic settings, is a highly debated topic in higher education, including dental education. Within dental education, a large portion of education occurs in preclinical laboratories and clinical environments. There is little to no research on attendance in these settings in dental schools.

Introduction: The goal of regenerative endodontic procedures is to preserve and stimulate stem cells from the apical papilla (SCAPs) to develop the pulp-dentin complex using various growth factors and scaffolds. We hypothesized that the treatment of SCAPs with vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) or nerve growth factor (NGF) may impact the expression of osteogenic and dentinogenic markers.
Methods: The optimum concentration of VEGF and NGF on SCAP viability was assessed and introduced to SCAPs for 6-24 hours.

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of light cure, as well as various dentin surface treatment approaches, on the penetration depth of silver precipitating from 38% silver diamine fluoride into primary dentin tubules.
Methods: The occlusal dentin surfaces of 42 non-carious primary molars were exposed and then sectioned into halves bucco-lingually. The halves from each tooth pair were randomly split in two mega-groups, and each mega-group was divided randomly as follows into six experimental groups: prepared by either carbide bur (G1, G2), ceramic bur (G3, G4), or erbium laser (G5, G6).

Statement Of Problem: When a cement-retained lithium disilicate crown needs to be removed, perforation is needed to reach the abutment screw. How this process affects its strength is unclear.
Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the fracture strength of milled lithium disilicate implant crowns with screw-access holes created before and after the firing stages.
