Epidemiologic evidence indicates that red wine may contain phenolic compounds which protect against heart disease and cancer. Resveratrol and quercetin are wine phenolics which possess antioxidant and antimutagenic effects. Resveratrol at 10 and 100 microM induced significant dose-dependent inhibition in human oral squamous carcinoma cell (SCC-25) growth and DNA synthesis.

Unprotected protein at the dentin-adhesive interface.

Objective: With dental bonding systems that require acid etching of dentin, inadequate adhesive penetration can leave exposed collagen at the dentin-adhesive interface. The exposed collagen could be degraded by bacterial proteases, compromising the integrity of the dentin-adhesive bond and, ultimately, the restoration. The purpose of this study was to develop a nondestructive staining technique to identify exposed collagenous protein at the dentin-adhesive interface.

This study investigated the involvement of RNA folding in the synthesis of a fusion protein with beta-galactosidase activity. The coding gap region of the Prevotella loescheii adhesin gene plaA was fused in-frame with the Escherichia coli lacZ gene on plasmid pSK105. N-Terminal sequencing of the expressed plaA-lacZ protein indicated that it resulted from translational initiation at a fortuitous ribosomal-binding site within the plaA sequence at nt 570.

Bacteremia and intraoral suture removal: can an antimicrobial rinse help?

Recent studies have shown that bacteremia can result from the removal of intraoral sutures. The authors found that preprocedural use of an antimicrobial oral rinse (0.12 percent chlorhexidine) did not significantly reduce the incidence of bacteremia when compared with no rinse at all.

While being shipped to a laboratory, impressions can be exposed to excessive temperatures. This study compared the effects of different time and temperature storage conditions, including temperature extremes of 66 C and -10 C, on the accuracy of addition silicone and polyether impressions. The greatest distortion generally occurred as a result of the 66 C temperature extreme.

Some dentists have voluntarily chosen to leave the dental profession despite the considerable time, effort, and financial expenditures involved in their educations. The purpose of this study was to survey the entire population of dentists who had identified themselves as being principally employed in a career outside of clinical practice in the American Dental Association's 1991 Census. A four-page survey was mailed to 654 former dentists, with a total of 237 usable responses (36%).

Chronic stomatitis: an early sign of Crohn's disease.

The purpose of this study was to histologically compare the healing of porcine skin incisions made by CO2 laser, electrosurgery, and conventional scalpel. This paper reviews the oral health history of President Eisenhower from his early years as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Tank Corps to the last years of his life. It includes first hand accounts of his oral care when President, provides evidence that his periodontitis stabilized after he quit smoking, documents the destructive effects of his parafunctional grinding on his dentition and how he was plagued with fracturing teeth the last fifteen years of his life. Finally, it shows the special care Eisenhower was given both as a renowned leader and a medically compromised patient.

An instrument developed for third-grade schoolchildren and their parents was pilot-tested for its ability to measure orthodontic attitudes and perception of the child's need for braces. Vitamin E succinate potentiates the inhibitory effect of prostaglandins on oral squamous carcinoma cell proliferation.

Previous studies have shown that prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and vitamin E succinate can act in an additive manner to inhibit the proliferation of human oral squamous carcinoma cells (SCC-25). The initial studies on the additive anticancer activity of PGE2 and vitamin E succinate have been extended to include antineoplastic PGs, delta 12-PGJ2 and PGJ2. Treatment of oral squamous carcinoma cells (SCC-15) with delta 12-PGJ2, PGJ2, and vitamin E succinate, individually, caused significant concentration-dependent inhibition of cell proliferation to various degrees.
