Background/purpose: The relationship among chewing ability, food texture selection, and nutritional status in the elderly is well-known. This study tried to find the reliable biomarkers to predict the chewing ability and nutritional status of the elderly people.
Materials And Methods: Sixty-eight elderly subjects (mean age, 80.
Background/purpose: Complications, such as postoperative pneumonia, can occur after pediatric cardiac surgery; however, studies on related changes in perioperative oral bacterial counts are scarce. Herein, we investigated the changes in oral bacterial counts before and after surgery in infants who underwent cardiac surgery, as well as after oral care using an antiseptic mouthwash.
Materials And Methods: A total of 102 infants who underwent congenital heart disease surgery were enrolled in this study.

Background/purpose: Oral mucosal lesions are associated with a variety of pathological conditions. Most deep-learning-based convolutional neural network (CNN) systems for computer-aided diagnosis of oral lesions have typically concentrated on determining limited aspects of differential diagnosis. This study aimed to develop a CNN-based diagnostic model capable of classifying clinical photographs of oral ulcerative and associated lesions into five different diagnoses, thereby assisting clinicians in making accurate differential diagnoses.

Background/purpose: Dental management prior to radiotherapy is often time-critical, and there are no studies on whether manipulations such as tooth extraction influence the risk of severe radiation-induced oral mucositis (ROM) during radiotherapy. Therefore, the aim of this study was to describe the relationship between dental management and the incidence of severe ROM.
Materials And Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 144 head and neck cancer (HNC) patients who received dental management before radiotherapy at Peking University Cancer Hospital, from January 2016 to December 2017.

Background/purpose: Although clinical studies have suggested a link between non-axial forces and reduced longevity of cervical restorations, the underlying mechanisms require further numerical investigation. This in-silico study employed a cohesive zone model (CZM) to investigate interfacial damage in a cervical restoration subjected to different load directions.
Materials And Methods: A plane strain model of a maxillary premolar was established, with a wedge-shaped buccal cervical restoration.

Background/purpose: In general, improving oral health can reduce the risk of pneumonia. The purpose of this retrospective cohort study was to investigate the risk of pneumonia between cerebral palsy (CP) cohort and non-CP cohort as well as the association of pneumonia with the number of dental visits in CP patients in Taiwan.
Materials And Methods: We identified 10,544 patients who were diagnosed with CP between 2010 and 2019 from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database.

Background/purpose: -2,3,5,4'-tetrahydroxystilbene-2-O-β-D-glucoside (THSG) is a bioactive component in the Chinese herb Polygonum multiflorum, recognized for its anti-inflammatory and lipid-lowering properties. Human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs) have excellent capabilities in tooth regeneration, wound healing, and neural repair. The exosomes (Exo) released by hDPSCs contain bioactive molecules that influence cell proliferation, differentiation, and immune responses.

Background/purpose: Chronic periodontitis and tooth loss contribute to cognitive decline. Since many biological processes are shared by loss of teeth and loss of pulps, this study investigated the potential association between loss of pulp and the development of dementia.
Materials And Methods: A retrospective cohort analysis was conducted to investigate the association between dental treatment and the development of dementia.

Background: : The metabolic by-product butyric acid of Gram-negative anaerobic bacteria can invoke pathological effects on periodontal cells resulting in inflammation and further destruction of periodontium. However, limited researches on the effects of butyric acid on cementoblasts were reported. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the type of cell death in murine cementoblast (OCCM.

Background/purpose: studies are essential for understanding cellular responses, but traditional culture systems often neglect the three-dimensional (3D) structure of real implants, leading to limitations in cellular recruitment and behavior largely governed by gravity. The objective of this study was to pioneer a novel 3D dynamic osteoblastic culture system for assessing the biological capabilities of dental implants in a more clinically and physiologically relevant manner.
Materials And Methods: Rat bone marrow-derived osteoblasts were cultured in a 24-well dish with a vertically positioned dental implant.

Background/purpose: Inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) injury is the most serious complication associated with dental implant surgery, posing difficulties in treatment and potential for permanent disabilities. This study aimed to identify patient-related risk factors for IAN injury during implant placement and to investigate sensory disturbances depending on whether the implant was removed.
Materials And Methods: Twenty-eight patients with implant-related IAN injury were included.

Background/purpose: Multiple augmentation protocols are documented in the literature to rebuild the deficient alveolar ridge after tooth extraction; however, achieving adequate vertical augmentation remains the most challenging goal. This study demonstrated a novel surgical technique of early vertical ridge augmentation for post-dental extraction. This technique offers several biological and technical advantages regarding the timing of the procedure and its relative simplicity compared to other complex techniques.

Background/purpose: Osseointegration potential is greatly depended on the interaction between bone cells and dental implant surface. Since zirconia ceramic has a bioinert surface, functionalization of the surface with an organic compound allylamine was conducted to overcome its drawback of minimal interaction with the surrounding bone.
Materials And Methods: The zirconia surface was initially treated with argon glow discharge plasma (GDP), then combined with amine plasma at three different conditions of 50-W, 75-W and 85-W, to prepare the final samples.

Background/purpose: Studies have demonstrated a relation between hypercholesterolemia and development of apical periodontitis (AP), but the underlying mechanism is uncertain. 27-hydroxycholesterol (27HC), produced by cytochrome P450 27A1 (CYP27A1)-catalyzed hydroxylation of cholesterol, is known to possess pro-inflammatory activity. Felodipine is an anti-hypertensive agent able to inhibit CYP27A1.
