Annually, thousands of individuals suffer from skin injuries resulting from trauma, surgeries, or diabetes. Inadequate wound treatment can delay healing and increase the risk of severe infections. In this context, a promising synthetic polymer with potent antimicrobial properties, Poly{2-[(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethylammonium chloride} (PMETAC), is synthesized and crosslinked with N,N'-Methylenebis(acrylamide) (BIS) in the presence of Chitosan (CH), a natural, biocompatible polysaccharide that promotes cell regeneration and provides additional beneficial properties.

Lignin holds significant potential as a feedstock for generating valuable aromatic compounds, fuels, and functional materials. However, achieving this potential requires the development of effective dissolution methods. Previous works have demonstrated the remarkable capability of hydrotropes to enhance the aqueous solubility of lignin, an amphiphilic macromolecule.

Instant coffees are consumed worldwide and their packages must protect them mainly from moisture gain. Flexible packaging stand-up pouches made by PET/Al foil/LDPE are currently used but, the look for alternative materials is interesting to replace the aluminum foil with reducing costs and focusing on sustainability. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the quality loss of freeze-dried and spray-dried (agglomerated and powder) instant coffees during 365 days at 25 °C/75% RH, packaged in five plastic structures: PET (polyethylene terephthalate)/Al (aluminum) foil/LDPE (low density polyethylene), LDPE/HDPE (high density polyethylene)/LDPE, BOPP (biaxially oriented polypropylene)/BOPP met (metallized)/PP, PET/PET met/LDPE and PET/BOPP met/LDPE.

The production of ethanol from lignocellulosic sources presents increasingly difficult issues for the global biofuel scenario, leading to increased production costs of current second-generation (2G) ethanol when compared to first-generation (1G) plants. Among the setbacks encountered in industrial processes, the presence of chemical inhibitors from pre-treatment processes severely hinders the potential of yeasts in producing ethanol at peak efficiency. However, some industrial yeast strains have, either naturally or artificially, higher tolerance levels to these compounds.

Cellulose nanocrystals-based materials as hemostatic agents for wound dressings: a review.

Biomed Microdevices

Department of Material Engineering and Bioprocesses, University of Campinas (UNICAMP), School of Chemical Engineering (FEQ), University City Zeferino Vaz, Campinas, SP, CEP 13083-970, Brazil.

Wound dressings are devices used to stop bleeding and provide appropriate environmental conditions to accelerate wound healing. The effectiveness of wound dressing materials can be crucial to prevent deaths from excessive bleeding in surgeries and promote complete restoration of the injury. Some requirements for an ideal wound dressing are rapid hemostatic effect, high swelling capacity, antibacterial properties, biocompatibility, biodegradability, and mechanical strength.

In this research, the mechanism of an efficient strategy for the synthesis of 58S bioglass with high structural homogeneity by a citric acid assisted sol-gel route was investigated. This is an interesting approach to prepare bioactive glass via the sol-gel method with application potential in bone tissue engineering and also for the development of new biomedical devices. Herein, 58S bioglass was synthesized by two routes: conventional sol-gel method (CSG) and citric acid assisted sol-gel route coupled to the self-propagating combustion method (SPC).

Department of Chemistry, Universidade Federal de Lavras, Lavras 37200-000, Brazil. Electronic address:

In this work we synthesized an activated carbon/magnetite composite by a simple co-precipitation method. The activated carbon (AC) was synthesized from the solid waste obtained in the extraction process of the peroxidase enzyme and the magnetic composite was used as support for the immobilization of soybean peroxidase (SP). After the determination of the optimal immobilization parameters, a 100% yield was achieved under the following conditions: support:enzyme proportion of 1.
