Epidemiological methods in transition: Minimizing biases in classical and digital approaches.

PLOS Digit Health

January 2025

Social Physics and Complexity (SPAC) Lab, LIP-Laboratory for Instrumentation and Experimental Particle Physics, Lisboa, Portugal.

Epidemiology and Public Health have increasingly relied on structured and unstructured data, collected inside and outside of typical health systems, to study, identify, and mitigate diseases at the population level. Focusing on infectious diseases, we review the state of Digital Epidemiology at the beginning of 2020 and how it changed after the COVID-19 pandemic, in both nature and breadth. We argue that Epidemiology's progressive use of data generated outside of clinical and public health systems creates several technical challenges, particularly in carrying specific biases that are almost impossible to correct for a priori.

The growth in carbon emissions poses a severe challenge to global sustainable development, making it imperative to explore the impacts of economic restructuring and technological progress on Carbon Emission Performance (CEP). However, existing studies often lack an integrated analysis of economic restructuring and technological progress, while giving limited attention to the indirect role of Environmental Regulation (ER). This study constructs a multidimensional theoretical framework, breaking down economic restructuring into four dimensions-industrial structure, factor input, ownership, and new-type urbanization (NTU), and refining technological progress into technological innovation and energy efficiency.

Unraveling Spatial Heterogeneity in Mass Spectrometry Imaging Data with GraphMSI.

Adv Sci (Weinh)

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Environmental and Biological Analysis, Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong, SAR, 999077, China.

Mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) provides valuable insights into metabolic heterogeneity by capturing in situ molecular profiles within organisms. One challenge of MSI heterogeneity analysis is performing an objective segmentation to differentiate the biological tissue into distinct regions with unique characteristics. However, current methods struggle due to the insufficient incorporation of biological context and high computational demand.

This study explores the causes of curiosity-driven impulse buying in blind boxes using the Stimulus-Organism-Response (S-O-R) model and adaptation level theory. It examines how store environment and product factors contribute to customer curiosity, incorporating price consciousness into the overall framework. Insights from an online survey of 306 Chinese respondents indicate that environmental factors and specific product characteristics positively influence consumer curiosity, while price consciousness has a negative moderate effect.

Survey response times (RTs) have hitherto untapped potential to allow researchers to gain more detailed insights into the cognitive performance of participants in online panel studies. We examined if RTs recorded from a brief online survey could serve as a digital biomarker for processing speed. Data from 9,893 adults enrolled in the nationally representative Understanding America Study were used in the analyses.

D3-ImgNet: A Framework for Molecular Properties Prediction Based on Data-Driven Electron Density Images.

J Phys Chem A

January 2025

Liaoning Key Laboratory of Manufacturing System and Logistics Optimization, Shenyang 110819, China.

Artificial intelligence technology has introduced a new research paradigm into the fields of quantum chemistry and materials science, leading to numerous studies that utilize machine learning methods to predict molecular properties. We contend that an exemplary deep learning model should not only achieve high-precision predictions of molecular properties but also incorporate guidance from physical mechanisms. Here, we propose a framework for predicting molecular properties based on data-driven electron density images, referred to as D3-ImgNet.

Objectives: For US Medicare and Medicaid, single drug prices do not reflect the value of supplemental indications. Value-based indication-specific and weighted-average pricing has been suggested for drugs with multiple indications. Under indication-specific pricing, a distinct price is assigned to the differential value a drug offers in each indication.

Many scholars argue that there is a deepening crisis of trust in healthcare systems. What is not contested is the centrality of public trust in building reputational value in healthcare organisations. However, there is a dearth of research focused on better understanding how trust in healthcare institutions, and the healthcare workforce, can be sustainably cultivated.

We posit that curiosity, an epistemic emotion, is an integral part of entrepreneurial education, entrepreneurial activities, and learning, which seek to develop an entrepreneurial mindset, a form of cognitive ability. The purpose of the present investigation was to examine the influence of autonomy and competence satisfaction on epistemic curiosity and the influence of epistemic curiosity on epistemic satisfaction and performance on epistemic activities in entrepreneurial education. Participants completed a battery of questionnaires in three waves of data collection.

Coinciding with athlete mothers' stories gaining media visibility, sport media researchers are studying media discourses to learn more about socially constructed motherhood and sport. The present study extends media research on elite athlete mothers, by using feminist narrative inquiry to interrogate discrimination meanings in sport. North American sport media stories were collected on Canadian athletes' (i.

Background: Social prescribing link workers support patients to connect with community resources to improve their health and well-being. These roles are prominent in policy, but there is limited evidence on what support is provided by link workers and what factors influence implementation of link worker interventions.

Methods: A convergent, mixed methods process evaluation of an exploratory randomised trial of a one-month general practice-based link worker intervention targeting adults with multimorbidity in deprived areas.

Replications are important for assessing the reliability of published findings. However, they are costly, and it is infeasible to replicate everything. Accurate, fast, lower-cost alternatives such as eliciting predictions could accelerate assessment for rapid policy implementation in a crisis and help guide a more efficient allocation of scarce replication resources.

Background/objectives: Absenteeism refers to the frequent, often unplanned, absence from the workplace. This study examines the interrelations among job satisfaction, quality of life (QoL), and absenteeism among formal caregivers for elderly individuals. With the significant demographic shift toward an aging population, understanding these dynamics is increasingly important.

The unrecognized potential of potential-based achievement goals.

Br J Educ Psychol

December 2024

Department of Quantitative Economics, School of Business and Economics, Maastricht University, Maastricht, The Netherlands.

Background: For over a decade, growth-oriented achievement goal constructs like potential-based goals and personal best goals have remained relatively unnoticed. This empirical study aims to highlight that goal theorists might be limiting themselves by not incorporating potential-based goals into their frameworks.

Aims: The primary objective of this research was to underscore the significant yet underappreciated role of potential-based goals in empirical studies within the 3 × 2 achievement goal framework.

This paper examines the influence of the new 15 % Value Added Tax (VAT) enforcement on non-financial listed companies in Saudi Arabia. By comparing financial data from 2019, before the VAT implementation and the COVID-19 pandemic, with data from 2020, during both the VAT increase and the pandemic, the research aims to uncover the consequences of this tax policy change. Utilizing charts, tables, and an event study analysis approach with the Autoregressive Moving Average (ARMA) model, we investigated key financial indicators such as Shareholders' Equity (SE), Total Income (TI), Total Revenues (TR), Net Income (NI), Total Expenses (TE), Other Changes in Operating Activity (COA), and Cash at the End of the Period (CEP).

Substitution patterns and price response for plant-based meat alternatives.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

December 2024

Department of Business Administration, Faculty of Business and Economics, University of Göttingen, Göttingen 37073, Germany.

Efforts to promote sustainable resource use through reduced meat consumption face challenges as global meat consumption persists. The resistance may be attributed to the lower sales price of meat compared to most plant-based meat alternatives (PBMAs). Addressing this, our research delves into the pivotal question of which PBMAs resonate most with consumers and how pricing affects demand.
