Introduction: Dengue is one of the most widespread arboviruses in Latin America and is now affecting areas previously free of transmission. The COVID-19 pandemic and climatic variations appear to have affected the incidence of the disease, abundance of vectors and health programs related to dengue in some countries.

Objective: To analyze the epidemiology of dengue in Paltas, Ecuador (2016-2022), compare the periods before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, examine entomological reports and discuss the possible implications of the COVID-19 pandemic and climatic variations.

In the current investigation, the efficiency inhibition of two newly synthesized bi-pyrazole derivatives, namely 2,3-bis[(bis((1 H-pyrazol-1-yl) methyl) amino)] pyridine (Tetra-Pz-Ortho) and 1,4-bis[(bis((1 H-pyrazol-1-yl) methyl) amino)] benzene (Tetra-Pz-Para) for corrosion of carbon steel (C&S) in 1 M HCl medium was evaluated. A Comparative study of inhibitor effect of Tetra-Pz-Ortho and Tetra-Pz-Para was conducted first using weight loss method and EIS (Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy) and PDP (Potentiodynamic Polarisation) techniques. Tetra-Pz-Ortho and Tetra-Pz-Para had a maximum inhibition efficacy of 97.

Transitioning to plant-dominant dishes in the growing meal kit delivery market could significantly reduce the greenhouse gas emission footprint of the sector. However, many consumers choose meat-based options without considering plant-based alternatives when ordering food online. This scenario-based survey experiment with 669 consumers tested whether an environmental message between lunch and dinner would increase stated plant-based dinner choices.

Evaluation of forest eco-efficiency: A transformation of ecological value quantity perspective.

Sci Total Environ

January 2025

China Center for Energy Economics Research, School of Economics, Xiamen University, Fujian, Xiamen 361005, China. Electronic address:

Numerous beneficial products and services are offered by forest ecosystem. However, studies on the efficiency transformation perspective of forest ecological value are relatively few. This study accounts for material supply, ecological service, and cultural value when calculating the gross forest ecological economic product (GFEEP).

The disease burden of air pollution (AP) has been well-documented, yet few studies have explored its economic burden. Retrieving disease burden data from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2021, this study constructed a cost-of-illness (COI) model to estimate China's economic burden of AP in 1990 and 2021 and to identify national and provincial differences, then, an age-period-cohort (APC) model was adopted to estimate trends to 2050. Results demonstrated a serious load of AP, emphasizing the necessity for intervention.

Exploring the Credibility of Large Language Models for Mental Health Support: Protocol for a Scoping Review.

JMIR Res Protoc

January 2025

Data and Web Science Group, School of Business Informatics and Mathematics, University of Manneim, Mannheim, Germany.

Background: The rapid evolution of large language models (LLMs), such as Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT; Google) and GPT (OpenAI), has introduced significant advancements in natural language processing. These models are increasingly integrated into various applications, including mental health support. However, the credibility of LLMs in providing reliable and explainable mental health information and support remains underexplored.

Article Synopsis
  • The emergence of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technology has transformed clinical diagnostics, providing extensive microbiome data for personalized medicine.
  • Despite its potential, microbiome data's complexity and variability pose challenges for traditional statistical and machine learning approaches, including deep learning.
  • The paper presents a novel feature engineering technique that combines two data feature sets, significantly improving the Deep Neural Network's performance in colorectal cancer detection, raising the Area Under the Curve (AUC) from 0.800 to 0.923, thus enhancing microbiome data analysis and disease detection capabilities.

This article compares the population agglomeration characteristics of the Xi'an metropolitan area in western China with those of metropolitan areas in other regions officially approved by the Chinese government. The kernel density estimation method and Markov chain model were used to conduct the study. The results revealed that from 2010 to 2020, the population agglomeration level of the Xi'an metropolitan area showed a trend of first increasing and then decreasing.

Historically, the film industry has been male-dominated both in front of and behind the camera, resulting in a longstanding gender imbalance in storytelling and representation. This legacy of male-centric narratives may unconsciously influence critics' expectations and judgments. Existing literature suggests that negative critiques in movie reviews can significantly impact actors' earnings by diminishing a film's commercial prospects.

Electric-field-induced shape memory effect has potential applications in electromechanical actuator. Here, this study proposes the a phase structure design routine in (1-x)(75NaBiTiO-25SrTiO)-xPbTiO ceramics to obtain large electromechanical response and shape memory effect. It is found that the shape memory effect is closely related to the bending deformation induced by asymmetric polarization between positive and negative electrodes, which is resulted from the reductions of Bi and Pb because of electron injection from negative electrode.

Interventions to reduce non-prescription antimicrobial sales in community pharmacies.

Cochrane Database Syst Rev

January 2025

Global Health Nursing, Graduate School of Nursing Science, St. Luke's International University, Chuo-ku, Japan.

Background: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major global health concern. One of the most important causes of AMR is the excessive and inappropriate use of antimicrobial drugs in healthcare and community settings. Most countries have policies that require antimicrobial drugs to be obtained from a pharmacy by prescription.

Objectives: To determine the health utility values (HUVs) of overactive bladder (OAB), defined as urinary urgency, usually accompanied by urinary daytime or nocturnal frequency, with or without urinary incontinence, among adults aged ≥65 years and to assess the HUV decrements (disutilities) of OAB according to its severity.

Methods: This cross-sectional Internet-based study was conducted between 2 and 9 November 2023, with quota sampling with equal probability for each sex and age group (age 65-74 years and ≥75 years). OAB was defined as an urgency score of ≥2 points and a total score of ≥3 points based on the Overactive Bladder Symptom Score.

Accurate building segmentation has become critical in various fields such as urban management, urban planning, mapping, and navigation. With the increasing diversity in the number, size, and shape of buildings, convolutional neural networks have been used to segment and extract buildings from such images, resulting in increased efficiency and utilization of image features. We propose a building semantic segmentation method to improve the traditional Unet convolutional neural network by integrating attention mechanism and boundary detection.

The effects of poor fluid milk experience on store choice and customer loyalty in online and in-store retail channels.

JDS Commun

January 2025

Nolan School of Hotel Administration, SC Johnson College of Business, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY 14853.

Dairy producers work extensively to ensure quality, but there is limited information on how poor experience with milk affects consumer choice. This study uses an online survey of 725 US consumers to assess how a poor experience with milk affects purchase behavior in different channels. We examine the relationship between product experience and purchase behavior and find that a poor experience is associated with a greater likelihood of switching stores and with lower net promoter scores, suggesting that having high quality milk may improve customer loyalty.
