In certain mammals, including humans, the loss of the Cytidine Monophospho-N-Acetylneuraminic Acid Hydroxylase gene (negative-CMAH) prevents the synthesis of Neu5Gc, which acts as a Mammalian-associated Carbohydrate Antigen (MCA), (XeSiAs-Neu5Gc).
