As a chronic gynecological disease, endometriosis is defined as the implantation of endometrial glands as well as stroma outside the uterine cavity. Proliferation is a major pathophysiology in endometriosis. Previous studies demonstrated a hormone named melatonin, which is mainly produced by the pineal gland, exerts a therapeutic impact on endometriosis.

Current clinical assessment tools don't fully capture the genuine neural deficits experienced by chronic stroke survivors and, consequently, they don't fully explain motor function throughout everyday life. Towards addressing this problem, here we aimed to characterise post-stroke alterations in upper-limb control from a novel perspective to the muscle synergy by applying, for the first time, a computational approach that quantifies diverse types of functional muscle interactions (i.e.

Background: The Rh blood group system (ISBT004) is encoded by two homologous genes, RHD and RHCE. Polymorphism in these two genes gives rise to 56 antigens, which are highly immunogenic and clinically significant. This study extended previous work on the establishment of RHD allele specific reference sequences using next generation sequencing (NGS) with the Ion Personal Genome Machine (Ion PGM) to sequence the complete RHCE gene.

Background: Previous randomized clinical trials did not support a benefit of screening for occult cancer after diagnosis of venous thromboembolism (VTE), although screening may be of potential benefit for selected high-risk patients.

Methods And Results: The COMMAND VTE Registry-2 enrolled consecutive patients with acute symptomatic VTE between 2015 and 2020 from 31 centers across Japan. The 3,706 patients in the registry without known active cancer at the time of VTE diagnosis were divided into 2 groups: those with (n=250) and without (n=3,456) newly diagnosed cancer during the follow-up period.

Background: The gene C9orf72 harbors a non-coding hexanucleotide repeat expansion known to cause amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and frontotemporal dementia. While previous studies have estimated the length of this repeat expansion in multiple tissues, technological limitations have impeded researchers from exploring additional features, such as methylation levels.

Methods: We aimed to characterize C9orf72 repeat expansions using a targeted, amplification-free long-read sequencing method.

Development of tetracycline analogues with increased aqueous stability for the treatment of mycobacterial infections.

Tuberculosis (Edinb)

December 2024

Department of Chemical Biology and Therapeutics, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, MS#1000, Memphis, TN, 38105, USA. Electronic address:

Tetracycline analogs from the minocycline family have recently shown promise for the treatment of non-tuberculous mycobacterial infections. However, current tetracycline and minocycline therapeutics can be limited by tolerability, stability, or inactivation by TetX. In this study, a series of novel 9-heteroaryl substituted minocycline analogs were designed and synthesized, which resulted in analogs with good in vitro activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium abscessus, stability in water for more than 7 days, avoidance of TetX inactivation in M.

Apical periodontitis is an inflammatory disease caused by bacterial infection in the root canal that spreads to the apical periodontal tissues, resulting in bone resorption around the root apex as the disease progresses. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), a growth factor involved in angiogenesis, plays an important role in bone remodeling. We reported that caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE), a bioactive substance of propolis, induces VEGF in odontoblast-like cells and dental pulp cells.

Exp Gerontol

December 2024

Department of Physiology and Aging, University of Florida, Gainsville, FL, USA. Electronic address:

This special issue of the Journal of Experimental Gerontology explores the dynamic interplay between microbiomes and aging-related conditions. The four selected studies highlight the role of microbiota in Alzheimer's disease, cancer immunotherapy, myocardial infarction and tryptophan metabolism, providing insights into how microbiomes influence health and disease in aging. These studies underscore the potential for microbiome-targeted interventions to mitigate aging-related disorders and improve the quality of life for older adults.

The PARP inhibitor olaparib is an anti-cancer agent based on synthetic lethality that targets poly (ADP-ribose) polymerases. It is used as a therapeutic agent for breast, ovarian, pancreatic, and prostate cancers carrying BRCA1/2 mutations that cause deficiency in homologous recombination. In recent years, acquired resistance to PARP inhibitors has become a clinical problem in PARP inhibitor-treated patients.

Wastewater metagenomics in Africa: Opportunities and challenges.

PLOS Glob Public Health

December 2024

The African Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Data-Intensive Sciences, the Infectious Diseases Institute, College of Health Sciences, Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda.

The advent of metagenomics has dramatically expanded our understanding of microbial communities, particularly through the study of wastewater, which serves as a rich source of microbial data. In Africa, wastewater metagenomics presents unparalleled opportunities for public health monitoring, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) tracking, and the discovery of new microbial species and functions. Utilizing high-throughput sequencing (HTS) technologies, this method allows for direct analysis of nucleic acids from wastewater samples, providing a cost-effective and comprehensive approach for pathogen surveillance.

Laboratory of Data Discovery for Health Limited (D24H), Hong Kong SAR, China.

Summary: With the recent advancement in single-cell RNA-sequencing technologies and the increased availability of integrative tools, challenges arise in easy and fast access to large collections of cell atlas. Existing cell atlas portals rarely are open sourced and adaptable, and do not support meta-analysis at cell level. Here, we present an open source, highly optimised and scalable architecture, named Scope+, to allow quick access, meta-analysis and cell-level selection of the atlas data.

Endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) plays a crucial role in the treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) in the clinic, but the aneurysm remains in the patient's body after surgery, continuing to pose a risk of progression. Cycloastragenol (CAG) is proven to be an effective anti-AAA drug, and its vascular protective effects can be further improved when the hydrophobic CAG is encapsulated into nano-sized formulations to enhance its bioavailability. In this context, this study developed an extravascular patch hydrogel loaded with CAG nanostructured lipid carriers and a hydrophilic drug of doxycycline hydrochloride (DOX).
