The preservation of genome integrity during sperm and egg development is vital for reproductive success. During meiosis, the tumor suppressor BRCA1/BRC-1 and structural maintenance of chromosomes 5/6 (SMC-5/6) complex genetically interact to promote high fidelity DNA double strand break (DSB) repair, but the specific DSB repair outcomes these proteins regulate remain unknown. Using genetic and cytological methods to monitor resolution of DSBs with different repair partners in , we demonstrate that both BRC-1 and SMC-5 repress intersister crossover recombination events.

Ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) are widely distributed in marine and terrestrial habitats, contributing significantly to global nitrogen and carbon cycles. However, their genomic diversity, ecological niches, and metabolic potentials in the anoxic intertidal aquifers remain poorly understood. Here, we discovered and named a novel AOA genus, Nitrosomaritimum, from the intertidal aquifers of Yancheng Wetland, showing close metagenomic abundance to the previously acknowledged dominant AOA.

Laboratory models are central to microbiology research, advancing the understanding of bacterial physiology by mimicking natural environments, from soil to the human microbiome. When studying host-bacteria interactions, animal models enable investigators to examine bacterial dynamics associated with a host, and in the case of human infections, animal models are necessary to translate basic research into clinical treatments. Efforts toward improving animal infection models are typically based on reproducing host genotypes/phenotypes and disease manifestations, leaving a gap in how well the physiology of microbes reflects their behavior in a human host.

Background: Evolution of herbicide-resistant weed populations is a major challenge to world food production. Using different herbicides in rotation and/or using different herbicides together as mixtures are strategies that may delay the selection of resistance. This study used simulation modelling to investigate whether mixtures and rotations can delay the selection of both generalist polygenic and specialist monogenic herbicide resistance, and whether these strategies are more likely to lead to the selection of generalist resistance in weed types with varying biological characteristics.

B-cell-lymphoma-2 (BCL2) homology-3 (BH3) mimetics are inhibitors of protein-protein interactions (PPIs) that saturate anti-apoptotic proteins in the BCL2 family to induce apoptosis in cancer cells. Despite the success of the BH3-mimetic ABT-199 for the treatment of haematological malignancies, only a fraction of patients respond to the drug and most patients eventually develop resistance to it. Here we show that the efficacy of ABT-199 can be predicted by profiling the rewired status of the PPI network of the BCL2 family via single-molecule pull-down and co-immunoprecipitation to quantify more than 20 types of PPI from a total of only 1.

To better understand the role of microglia during chronic ocular hypertension, we depleted microglia from aged (9-12 months old) DBA/2 J (D2) mice, which exhibit age-related increases in intraocular pressure, using a dietary CSF1R antagonist, PLX5622. Plastic and microplastic contamination in the environment receive global attention, with calls for the synthesis of scientific evidence to inform actionable strategies and policy-relevant practices. We provide a systematic literature review on microplastic research across Australian coastal environments in water, sediment and biota, highlighting the main research foci and gaps in information. At the same time, we conducted surveys and workshops to gather expert opinions from multiple stakeholders (including researchers, industry, and government) to identify critical research directions to meet stakeholder needs across sectors.

Poultry's digestive tract lacks hydrolytic phytase enzymes, which results in chelation of dietary minerals, vital amino acids, proteins, and carbohydrates, phytate-phosphate unavailability, and contamination of the environment due to phosphorus.
