Summary: As brain imaging and neurofeedback technologies advance, the brain-to-brain interface (BBI) has emerged as an innovative field, enabling in-depth exploration of cross-brain information exchange and enhancing our understanding of collaborative intelligence. However, no open-source virtual reality (VR) platform currently supports the rapid and efficient configuration of multi-user, collaborative BBIs. To address this gap, we introduce the Collaborative Virtual Reality Brain-to-Brain Interface (CVR-BBI), an open-source platform consisting of a client and server.

Constitutive expression of cucumber CsACS2 in Arabidopsis disrupts anther dehiscence and male fertility via ethylene signaling and DNA methylation, revealing new avenues for enhancing crop reproductive traits. The cucumber gene CsACS2, encoding ACC (1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid) synthase, plays a pivotal role in ethylene biosynthesis and sex determination. This study investigates the effects of constitutive CsACS2 expression in Arabidopsis thaliana on anther development and male fertility.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the relationship between changes in microbial communities in the lungs and gut of a rat model for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) to understand how these changes may relate to disease mechanisms.
  • Researchers found significant differences in microbial composition in the lung and gut of IPF model rats when compared to control rats, indicating a potential link between microbial shifts and IPF.
  • Mediation analysis identified specific physiological indices, such as hydroxyproline and mean corpuscular volume, that connect lung and gut microbial genera, revealing complex interactions that could contribute to IPF pathology through the "gut-lung axis."

To investigate the impact of patient-specific boundary conditions (BC) on blood flow and thrombosis modelling for patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH), three types of BCs were utilized to construct CTEPH models based on computed tomography pulmonary angiography images. First BC type is the patient-specific velocity profiles at the main pulmonary artery using phase contrast MRI (PC-MRI). The other two simplified types are the pulsatile BC and steady BC, which are obtained by spatially and temporally averaging the PC-MRI BC.

School of Biological Science and Technology, University of Jinan, Jinan, Shandong 250022, China. Electronic address:

Enzyme therapy for cocaine detoxification should break down both cocaine and its primary toxic metabolite, benzoylecgonine (BZE), which is also the main form of cocaine contaminant in the environment. An ideal BZE-metabolizing enzyme (BZEase) is expected to be highly efficient and selective in BZE hydrolysis. Here, BZEase4 was engineered from bacterial cocaine esterase (CocE) by our reactant state-based enzyme design theories (RED), which has a 34,977-fold improved substrate discrimination between BZE and the neurotransmitter acetylcholine (ACh), compared with wild-type CocE.

Nature-Inspired Artificial Aggregation-Induced Emission Antenna for Assembling with Algae to Promote Photosynthesis.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

December 2024

School of Science and Engineering, Shenzhen Institute of Aggregate Science and Technology, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (CUHK-Shenzhen), Guangdong 518172, P.R. China.

Inspired by the structure of chlorophyll assembled on the thylakoid membrane through its long hydrophobic chain, we designed cationic aggregation-induced emission (AIE) amphiphiles with two long hydrophobic chains to assemble with the electronegative cytomembrane of algae for efficiently converting natural ultraviolet light into usable blue light to promote photosynthesis. The photosynthesis efficiency of algae depended on the carbon chain length of the AIE amphiphile due to the difference in assembly capacity with the algal membrane. The AIE amphiphile with two hydrophobic chains of 12 carbon atoms effectively intercalated into the cytomembrane of algae, serving as an artificial membrane-embedded antenna to significantly improve light utilization by algae.

Autosomal recessive conditions are often associated with homozygous mutations showing common ancestral origins and are frequently linked to consanguinity. However, an increasing number of compound heterozygotes are found in diverse, admixed populations. Oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) is a recessive condition caused mainly by mutations in the TYR and OCA2 genes involved in skin pigmentation.

December 2024

Shanghai Institute of Immunology, State Key Laboratory of Oncogenes and Related Genes, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, Shanghai, China.

Macrophage hyperactivation is a hallmark of inflammatory diseases, yet the role of alternative polyadenylation (APA) of mRNAs in regulating innate immunity remains unclear. In this study, we focused on 3'UTR-APA and demonstrated that Nudt21, a crucial RNA-binding component of the 3'UTR-APA machinery, is significantly upregulated in various inflammatory conditions. By utilizing myeloid-specific Nudt21-deficient mice, we revealed a protective effect of Nudt21 depletion against colitis and severe hyperinflammation, primarily through diminished production of proinflammatory cytokines.
