Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has become precarious, warranting investments in antimicrobial discovery. To investigate the antibacterial activity of rosemary essential oil (REO), alone and in combination with selected conventional antibiotics. REO was subjected to antimicrobial susceptibility testing (including minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) determination) and investigation of anti-pre-biofilm and antibiofilm activities.

  • Intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) are significant public health concerns, particularly in low and middle-income countries, where they can severely affect vulnerable populations through contaminated food and water.
  • A study analyzing 9 years of stool examination data found an overall prevalence of 21.20% of IPIs, with the highest rates among patients aged 70-79 and in the year 2020.
  • The most common parasites identified were intestinal flagellates, which accounted for 98.31% of the infections diagnosed in the study.

Background: The population structure of the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum can reveal underlying adaptive evolutionary processes. Selective pressures to maintain complex genetic backgrounds can encourage inbreeding, producing distinct parasite clusters identifiable by population structure analyses.

Methods: We analysed population structure in 3783 P falciparum genomes from 21 countries across Africa, provided by the MalariaGEN Pf7 dataset.

Background: The World Health Organization has set ambitious goals to eliminate cervical cancer, necessitating evidence on increasing coverage and access to screening and treatment in high-burden areas. We implemented a pilot program to assess the feasibility of obtaining self-collected specimens for high-risk human papillomavirus (hr-HPV) testing in Nzulezo stilt village, a hard-to-reach community in Ghana, and inviting only hr-HPV-positive women to a central location for colposcopy and possible treatment. Subsequently, this study aimed to investigate the prevalence of hr-HPV infection and cervical lesions among the women and to explore factors potentially associated with hr-HPV infection among them.

Background: Wound infections are often underestimated issues that can lead to chronic illnesses, and since the introduction of antibiotics, wound complications have become less common. However, due to the increased and irrational use of these antibiotics, the resistance in the bacterial isolates has become very common. This has led to reduced treatment options, delay in wound healing, and high treatment costs.

Background: Malaria and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection coexist in significant numbers in some geographic areas including sub-Sahara Africa (SSA). HIV-infected patients are a World Health Organization (WHO) recognized high risk group for increased malaria morbidity. Majority of HIV-infected patients undertaking treatment in SSA are on WHO recognized first-line combination antiretroviral therapy (cART).

Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic the aetiology of respiratory illnesses were narrowed to SARS-CoV-2. This prevented diagnosis of other pathogens and patients were not notified of the accurate diagnosis of their illnesses when SARS-CoV-2 was absent. It is therefore important to look back and determine what else was present but was missed.

The World Health Organization (WHO) strict defining criteria were used to identify severe malaria among Ghanaian patients clinically diagnosed as uncomplicated malaria. From each study participant, blood haemoglobin (Hb) and plasma bilirubin levels were estimated using automated analyzers. According to the WHO, the criteria for diagnosing severe malaria among children (< 12 years) was assessed using Hb < 5 g/dL and among other patients ≥ 12 years, Hb < 7 g/dL with parasitemia > 10,000/μL, plasma bilirubin > 50 μmol/L amidst parasitemia > 100,000/μL and P.

  • - The study examined the knowledge and prevalence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among 178 adults seeking treatment in Ho Municipality, revealing that 24.72% tested positive for STIs, with gonorrhoea being the most prevalent.
  • - Despite a high level of awareness about STIs (only 13% had poor knowledge), there was no clear correlation between knowledge and lower infection rates, indicating that other factors may contribute to STI prevalence.
  • - Key findings included that unmarried participants had higher odds of infection and smokers had significantly increased odds compared to non-smokers, suggesting a need for further research on the underlying causes of STIs beyond just knowledge.
