Although per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been frequently linked to cardiovascular and renal disease separately, evidence remains scarce regarding their systematic effect. Therefore, we recruited 546 newly diagnosed acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients and detected seven myocardial enzymes and six kidney function biomarkers. Twelve PFAS were also assessed with ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.

Background: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a progressive and deadly lung disease with limited therapeutic options. Bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP4), a multifunctional growth factor that belongs to the transforming growth factor-β superfamily, is able to relieve pulmonary fibrosis in mice; nevertheless, the potential mechanism of action remains largely unknown. Growing evidence supports the notion that reiterant damage to the alveolar epithelial cells (AECs) is usually the "prime mover" for pulmonary fibrosis.

Background: Breast tumorigenesis is a complex and multistep process accompanied by both genetic and epigenetic dysregulation. In contrast to the extensive studies on DNA epigenetic modifications 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmC) and 5-methylcytosine (5mC) in malignant breast tumors, their roles in the early phases of breast tumorigenesis remain ambiguous.
Results: DNA 5hmC and 5mC exhibited a consistent and significant decrease from usual ductal hyperplasia to atypical ductal hyperplasia and subsequently to ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS).

Background: The fat-to-muscle mass ratio (FMR), integrating the antagonistic effects of fat and muscle mass, has been suggested as a valuable indicator to assess cardiometabolic health independent of overall adiposity. However, the specific associations of total and regional FMR with cardiometabolic risk are poorly understood. We aimed to examine sex-specific associations of total and regional FMR with single and clustered cardiometabolic risk factors (CRFs).

The functional integrity of CD8 T cells is closely linked to metabolic reprogramming; therefore, understanding the metabolic basis of CD8 T cell activation and antitumor immunity could provide insights into tumor immunotherapy. Here, we report that ME2 is critical for mouse CD8 T cell activation and immune response against malignancy. ME2 deficiency suppresses CD8 T cell activation and anti-tumor immune response in vitro and in vivo.

Though RNAi and RNA-splicing machineries are involved in regulating severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) replication, their precise roles in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pathogenesis remain unclear. Herein, we show that decreased RNAi component (Dicer and XPO5) and splicing factor (SRSF3 and hnRNPA3) expression correlate with increased COVID-19 severity. SARS-CoV-2 N protein induces the autophagic degradation of Dicer, XPO5, SRSF3, and hnRNPA3, inhibiting miRNA biogenesis and RNA splicing and triggering DNA damage, proteotoxic stress, and pneumonia.

Introduction: The differential diagnosis of early Parkinson's disease (PD) by a single biomarker is still challenging due to its symptomatic overlap with other neurological diseases. Increasing evidences support the use of saliva biomarkers of neurodegeneration, including microRNAs and α-synuclein (α-syn) seeding activity, to diagnose patients with idiopathic PD and multiple system atrophy (MSA). Our previous study confirmed the salivary microRNA-29a-3p (miRNA-29a-3p) and α-syn seeding activity could differentiate PD and MSA from healthy control subjects (HCs) and patients with essential tremor (ET).

Temperature has a profound influence on various neuromodulation processes and has emerged as a focal point. However, the effects of acute environmental temperature fluctuations on cultured cortical networks have been inadequately elucidated. To bridge this gap, we have developed a brain-on-a-chip platform integrating cortical networks and electrodeposited Pt/Ir modified microelectrode arrays (MEAs) with 3D-printed bear-shaped triple chambers, facilitating control of temperature transients.

Schizophrenia (SCZ) is a highly heterogeneous, severe neuropsychiatric disorder of unknown etiopathology. Increasing data indicate an overlap between schizophrenia and pathological processes related to immunological dysregulation as well as inflammation, such as high levels of pro-inflammatory substances in patients' blood and cerebrospinal fluid and autoantibodies against synaptic and nerve cell membrane proteins. Autoantibodies against SFT2D2 have been reported in patients with SCZ.
