Electronic address:

Electrochemists and ecological engineers find environmental bioelectrochemistry appealing; however, there is a big gap between expectations and actual progress in bioelectrochemical system (BES). Implementing such technology opens new opportunities for novel electrochemical reactions for resource recovery and effective wastewater treatment. Loopholes of BES exist in its scaling-up applications, and numerous attempts toward practical applications (200, 1000, and 1500 L) are key successive indicators toward its commercialization.

September 2022

School of Applied Science and Humanities, Haldia Institute of Technology, Haldia, 721657, India.

Superatoms, due to their various applications in redox and materials chemistry, have been a major topic of study in cluster science. Superhalogens constitute a special class of superatoms that mimic the chemistry of halogens and serve as building blocks of novel materials such as super and hyper salts, perovskite-based solar cells, solid-state electrolytes, and ferroelectric materials. These applications have led to a constant search for new class of superhalogens.

A nanofiber mat of styrene-co-vinylbenzyl chloride-co-acrylonitrile copolymer as an anion exchange membrane (AEM) was synthesized via the electrospinning of organic reaction mixtures. The synthesized membranes were characterized using FT-IR spectroscopy for structural analysis. The AEM demonstrated a high ionic conductivity mainly due to the phase segregation in the membrane structure, as analyzed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM).

Financial Fraud Detection and Prediction in Listed Companies Using SMOTE and Machine Learning Algorithms.

Entropy (Basel)

August 2022

Faculty of Natural, Mathematical and Engineering Sciences, King's College, London WC2R 2LS, UK.

This paper proposes a new method that can identify and predict financial fraud among listed companies based on machine learning. We collected 18,060 transactions and 363 indicators of finance, including 362 financial variables and a class variable. Then, we eliminated 9 indicators which were not related to financial fraud and processed the missing values.

To grow food for people, antibiotics were used, and these antibiotics can accumulate in the human body through food metabolism, which may have remarkably harmful effects on human health and safety. Therefore, low-cost sensors are needed for the detection of antibiotic residues in food samples. Recently, nanomaterial-based electrochemical sensors such as carbon nanoparticles, graphene nanoparticles, metal oxide nanoparticles, metal nanoparticles, and metal-organic nanostructures have been successfully used as sensing materials for the detection of chloramphenicol (CP) and furazolidone (FZ) antibiotics.

The hydrogen atom capacity in the vacancies of the LiTiO crystal is systematically studied by the first-principles method to evaluate its tritium release performance as a solid breeder material in nuclear fusion reactors. The adsorption process of adding hydrogen atoms one by one in the vacancy are investigated to find the possible adsorption sites of the hydrogen atoms in the vacancy. The charge transfer and density of states analysis are performed to reveal the form of a hydrogen-hydrogen dimer in the vacancy.

A portfolio of value-added chemicals, fuels and building block compounds can be envisioned from CO on an industrial scale. The high kinetic and thermodynamic stabilities of CO, however, present a significant barrier to its utilisation as a C1 source. In this context, metal-ligand cooperation methodologies have emerged as one of the most dominant strategies for the transformation of the CO molecule over the last decade or so.

BMC Res Notes

July 2022

School of Computing, Telkom University, Jalan Telekomunikasi Terusan Buah Batu, Bandung, West Java, Indonesia.

Objectives: In recent years, research on the use of electronic noses (e-nose) has developed rapidly, especially in the medical and food fields. Typically, e-nose is coupled with machine learning algorithms to detect or predict multiple sensory classes in a given sample. In many cases, comprehensive and complete experiments are required to ensure the generalizability of the predictive model.

Accelerated aerobic glycolysis is a distinctive metabolic property of cancer cells that confers dependency on glucose for survival. However, the therapeutic strategies targeting this vulnerability are still inefficient and have unacceptable side effects in clinical trials. Therefore, developing biomarkers to predict therapeutic efficacy would be essential to improve the selective targeting of cancer cells.

Background: Prebiotics and probiotics may be effective dietary components that can alter the gut microbiota of the host and, consequently, overcome imbalances associated with obesity. This work aimed to evaluate the synergistic and isolated effects and mechanisms by which probiotic yogurt containing Bifidobacterium animalis and/or Lactobacillus acidophilus and yacon flour alter metabolic parameters and inflammatory and insulin signaling proteins in diet-induced obese mice. Swiss mice were fed a high-fat diet (n = 48) or a standard diet (control; n = 6) for 56 days.

First-degree male relatives of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) sufferers can develop metabolic abnormalities evidenced by elevated circulating cholesterol and triglycerides, suggestive of a male PCOS equivalent. Similarly, male sheep overexposed to excess androgens in fetal life develop dyslipidaemia in adolescence. Dyslipidaemia, altered lipid metabolism, and dysfunctional hepatic mitochondria are associated with the development of non-alcoholic liver disease (NAFLD).

Chemosphere

October 2022

Diatom Nanoengineering and Metabolism Laboratory (DNM), School of Applied Science, Dr. Harisingh Gour Central University, Sagar, MP, 470003, India. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Untreated wastewater from textile industries containing toxic dyes poses a serious environmental threat, with the use of heavy metal-rich dyes increasing significantly in the last two decades.
  • Traditional treatment methods may remove dyes but produce secondary pollutants, while microalgae, particularly diatoms, offer a promising alternative for effective dye remediation.
  • An integrated system using microalgae with photosynthetic microbial fuel cells not only treats wastewater efficiently but also enhances lipid and carotenoid production and generates bioelectricity, suggesting a sustainable approach to wastewater management.

Background And Objective: Since low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) images typically have higher noise that may affect accuracy of disease diagnosis, the objective of this study is to develop and evaluate a new artifact-assisted feature fusion attention (AAFFA) network to extract and reduce image artifact and noise in LDCT images.

Methods: In AAFFA network, a feature fusion attention block is constructed for local multi-scale artifact feature extraction and progressive fusion from coarse to fine. A multi-level fusion architecture based on skip connection and attention modules is also introduced for artifact feature extraction.
