Communities face a mounting social, economic and health burden as the global population of older adults continues to grow. Regular physical activity is consistently reported as an effective means of maintaining health and independence in older adults, yet engagement in activity remains low. This study assesses the activity levels of adults aged over 65 years residing in Australian assisted living homes, and extended to examine their perception of their activity and explore possible factors that hinder or promote their engagement in physical activity.

Is Kinesio taping acutely effective for peripheral tissue perfusion in women with mild to moderate chronic venous insufficiency? A randomized controlled trial.

J Bodyw Mov Ther

October 2024

Graduate Program in Rehabilitation Sciences, Department of Physical Therapy - Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • *Methods: The trial involved 59 women, split into a KT group and a control group, who had their muscle blood perfusion measured using near-infrared spectroscopy before and after applying the tape, with statistical analysis to compare results.
  • *Results: While there were no significant differences in blood oxygen levels or deoxygenated hemoglobin between the KT and control groups, the KT group showed a notably larger decrease in certain measurements, suggesting potential clinical relevance despite the lack of statistical significance.

Article Synopsis
  • Older patients with heart failure (HF) experience a higher risk of developing pneumonia, which contributes to increased mortality rates.
  • A study of 1,266 hospitalized patients aged 65 and older found that those with low muscle strength were significantly more likely to develop pneumonia post-discharge.
  • Low muscle strength was identified as a strong predictor of pneumonia and associated with a fourfold increased risk of death after pneumonia onset.

Integrating DNA Barcoding Within an Orthogonal Approach for Herbal Product Authentication: A Narrative Review.

Phytochem Anal

November 2024

Biomolecular Technology Group, Leicester School of Allied Health Science, Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, De Montfort University, Leicester, UK.

Introduction: Existing methods for morphological, organoleptic, and chemical authentication may not adequately ensure the accurate identification of plant species or guarantee safety. Herbal raw material authentication remains a major challenge in herbal medicine. Over the past decade, DNA barcoding, combined with an orthogonal approach integrating various testing methods for quality assurance, has emerged as a new trend in plant authentication.

Background: The AYUSH 64 formulation helps to treat mild to moderate cases of COVID-19. Although several drugs have been proposed to combat COVID-19, no medication is available for SARS-CoV-2 infection. The RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) is the pivotal enzyme of SARS-CoV-2 replication, so it could be considered a better drug target for experimental studies.

Department of Physiology, School of Allied Health Sciences, Kitasato University, Sagamihara, Kanagawa 252-0373, Japan; Regenerative Medicine and Cell Design Research Facility, Kitasato University, School of Allied Health Science, Sagamihara, Kanagawa 252-0373, Japan.

Diabetes mellitus is associated with cognitive deficits in humans and animal models. These deficits are paralleled by neurophysiological and structural changes in the central nervous system, particularly in the hippocampus, which plays an important role in memory formation. We previously reported that the magnitude of long-term potentiation at hippocampal Schaffer collateral-CA1 synapses was significantly impaired in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced type 1 diabetic rats (STZ rats).

October 2024

School of Allied Health Science and Practice, The University of Adelaide, Adelaide, Australia.

Article Synopsis
  • Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that is increasingly threatening public health, particularly in Pacific Island communities, where local factors influencing infections are not well understood.
  • A systematic review of 42 studies revealed that human infections in the Pacific Islands are linked to sociodemographic, lifestyle, and environmental factors, such as male gender, Indigenous ethnicity, heavy rainfall, and interactions with animals.
  • Suggested prevention strategies include improving disease reporting, enhancing community water safety and rodent control, public health campaigns, and specific occupational safety measures in regions like New Zealand where work-related exposures are common.
