Living cells actively interact biochemically and mechanically with the surrounding extracellular matrices (ECMs) and undergo dramatic morphological and dimensional transitions, concomitantly remodeling ECMs. However, there is no suitable method to quantitatively discuss the contribution of mechanical interactions in such mutually adaptive processes. Herein, a highly deformable "living" cellular scaffold is developed to evaluate overall mechanical energy transfer between cell and ECMs.

Interlayer modification of layered materials with organocations has been known to endow the nanocomposite with hydrophobicity, and adsorption of aromatic compounds in the aqueous phase has been investigated for decades by using montmorillonite, a representative layered clay mineral, as the host material. Usage of the organocation has been believed to be effective due to the π-π interaction with the aromatic adsorbate, the presence of which is not verified spectroscopically in the water-immersed state. Considering that the organocation is generally regarded as a pillar to keep the interlayer space, the interaction between the organocation and adsorbate has not yet been clarified sufficiently.

The jarosite waste used during this study consists of minute amount of arsenic that has a potential to be leached into environment when kept in open area. This study tried to recover arsenic from jarosite waste using hydrometallurgical treatment. The comprehensive characterization of jarosite samples was performed using various analytical techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform Infrared (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and it was characterized as natrojarosite.

The formation of volatile compounds affects the flavor of processed wheat flour products. Herein, the effects of the composition of fatty acid hydroperoxides and the differences in the antioxidant contents among wheat cultivars on the flavor of wheat flour products were clarified. For this purpose, the volatile compounds in wheat flour doughs, LOX activity, fatty acid hydroperoxide composition from fractionated LOX, and antioxidant content were analyzed.

Mast cell stabilizers, including disodium cromoglycate (DSCG), were found to have potential as the agonists of an orphan G protein-coupled receptor, GPR35, although it remains to be determined whether GPR35 is expressed in mast cells and involved in suppression of mast cell degranulation. Our purpose in this study is to verify the expression of GPR35 in mast cells and to clarify how GPR35 modulates the degranulation. We explored the roles of GPR35 using an expression system, a mast cell line constitutively expressing rat GPR35, peritoneal mast cells, and bone marrow-derived cultured mast cells.

Developing sustainable energy solutions to safeguard the environment is a critical ongoing demand. Electrochemical water splitting (EWS) is a green approach to create effective and long-lasting electrocatalysts for the water oxidation process. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have become commonly utilized materials in recent years because of their distinguishing pore architectures, metal nodes easy accessibility, large specific surface areas, shape, and adaptable function.

The transition from seed to seedling represents a critical developmental step in the life cycle of higher plants, dramatically affecting plant ontogenesis and stress tolerance. The release from dormancy to acquiring germination ability is defined by a balance of phytohormones, with the substantial contribution of abscisic acid (ABA), which inhibits germination. We studied the embryonic axis of L.

In sharp contrast to conventional solid/hydrogel platforms, water-immiscible liquids, such as perfluorocarbons and silicones, allow the adhesion of mammalian cells via protein nanolayers (PNLs) formed at the interface. However, fluorocarbons and silicones, which are typically used for liquid cell culture, possess only narrow ranges of physicochemical parameters and have not allowed for a wide variety of cell culturing environments. In this paper, it is proposed that water-immiscible ionic liquids (ILs) are a new family of liquid substrates with tunable physicochemical properties and high solvation capabilities.

There is a growing incidence in the presence of emergent pollutants like the pesticides and pharmaceuticals in water bodies. The matter of environmental concern is their synthetic and persistent nature which has resulted in induced toxicity/damaging effect to the vital functioning of the different organs in the aquatic community. Traditional adsorbents have exhibited limitations like low stability and minimum reuse ability.

Mural cell adhesion is important for the localization of basement membrane components during angiogenesis, and cell-cell interactions are thought to be critical for basement membrane formation. Type IV collagen, a component of the basement membrane, and non-triple helical type IV collagen α1 chain (NTH α1(IV)) co-localize in the basement membrane of neovascular vessels. However, it remains unclear how type IV collagen and NTH α1(IV) are produced around the basement membrane.

We investigated supported-MoO materials effective for the chemical looping dry reforming of methane (CL-DRM) to decrease the reaction temperature. Ni-modified molybdenum zirconia (Ni/MoO/ZrO) showed CL-DRM activity under isothermal reaction conditions of 650 °C, which was 100-200 °C lower than the previously reported oxide-based materials. Ni/MoO/ZrO activity strongly depends on the MoO loading amount.

Typically, the quality of the bitumen adhesion in asphalt mixtures is assessed manually by a group of experts who assign subjective ratings to the thickness of the residual bitumen coating on the gravel samples. To automate this process, we propose a hardware and software system for visual assessment of bituminous coating quality, which provides the results both in the form of a discrete estimate compatible with the expert one, and in a more general percentage for a set of samples. The developed methodology ensures static conditions of image capturing, insensitive to external circumstances.

Plastic pollution increases globally due to the high volume of its production and inadequate mismanagement, leading to dumps in landfills affecting terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Landfills, as sink for plastics, leach various toxic chemicals and microplastics into the environment. An antifouling polymer brush-like structure was fabricated by a simple and versatile dip-coating method of sulfobetaine containing copolymer-grafted silica nanoparticles (SiNPs) and alkyl diiodide cross-linkers. Surface-initiated atom transfer radical copolymerization of 3-(-2-methacryloyloxyethyl--dimethyl)ammonatopropanesulfonate (MAPS) and -dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) was carried out from initiator-immobilized SiNPs to give poly(MAPS--DMAEMA)-grafted SiNPs (MAPS/DMAEMA = 9/1, mol/mol) with diameters of 150-170 nm. The SiNP--copolymer/2,2,2-trifluoroethanol solution was dip-coated on silicon and glass substrates.
