Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) represents more than 50% of paediatric soft tissue tumours. Conversely, it is extremely rare among adults, where it shows peculiar biological and clinical features that are still poorly investigated. RMS patients should be referred to a Sarcoma Centre, where the contribution of experienced radiologists plays a relevant role in the diagnostic assessment of the disease, including precise localisation, staging, image-guided biopsy, response evaluation after treatment and follow-up.

Unité d'Epidémiologie et Physiopathologie des Virus Oncogènes, Institut Pasteur, UMR3569 CNRS, Université de Paris, Paris, France.

Africa is the largest endemic area for HTLV-1, with many molecular genotypes. We previously demonstrated that some strains from North Africa (a-NA clade) originated from a recombinant event between Senegalese and West African strains. A series of 52 new HTLV-1 strains from 13 North and West African countries were sequenced in the LTR region and/or a env gene fragment.

Human immunodeficiency virus type 2 (HIV-2) was isolated in AIDS patients in 1986. Around 1-2 million people are infected worldwide. The virus is less transmissible than HIV-1, being sexual contacts the most frequent route of acquisition.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the treatment considerations and surgical techniques utilized by fellowship-trained orthopaedic sports medicine and foot and ankle specialists in the management of Achilles tendon ruptures. A blinded electronic survey was distributed to 2062 fellowship-trained sports medicine and 1319 fellowship-trained foot and ankle orthopaedic surgeons. The total number of acute Achilles tendon ruptures managed per year, patient-specific factors associated with surgical decision making and surgical techniques were evaluated.

Background: HIV-1 and HIV-2 differ in their antiretroviral (ARV) susceptibilities and drug resistance mutations (DRMs).

Methods: We analyzed published HIV-2 pol sequences to identify HIV-2 treatment-selected mutations (TSMs). Mutation prevalences were determined by HIV-2 group and ARV status.

In the nutrition support team (NST), medical technologists take a very important role in carrying out nutrition screening, nutrition assessment and nutrition monitoring. Medical technologists can look at the laboratory data of patients earlier than other NST staff. Using this advantage, the medical technologists can contribute to the NST.

Objective: We reviewed long-term survival among hosts in 3 consecutive series of a rhesus monkey-baboon orthotopic cardiac xenotransplantation model with reference to host immune response, including the effectiveness in preventing rejection and limiting toxicity concerning infection, to evaluate specific immunosuppressive regimens for long-term outcomes.

Methods: Six juvenile baboons surviving more than 300 days after transplantation were reviewed. Regimen A consisted of splenectomy, FK506, methotrexate, and antilymphocyte globulin.

von Willebrand disease and pregnancy.

J Matern Fetal Med

March 2001

New York University School and Medical Center, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, New York, USA.

von Willebrand Disease (vWD) affects approximately 1% of Americans and as many as 25% of women referred for evaluation of menorrhagia. We briefly review the history of vWD, its molecular defects, and diagnostic criteria for each subtype of disease. We also address obstetric management of the patient with vWD.

We report the first attempt of reduction of monoamniotic twins, discordant for hypoplastic left heart syndrome, using a new fetoscopic technique. Employing sonographic guidance and endoscopic visualization, cord ligation was accomplished, but significant cord entanglement, not previously appreciated, resulted in the ligation of the umbilical cord of the normal fetus. Cord entanglement may frustrate endoscopic techniques in monoamniotic twins.

We report only the 3rd case of closure of amniorrhexis following genetic amniocentesis. Our technique is the first to use endoscopic visualization of the rupture site and apply maternal platelets and fibrinogen/thrombin (Hemaseel Haemacure Corp Sarasota F1). The patient underwent repair at 20.

We examined the clinical significance of the lung-thorax transverse-area ratio (L/T) in fetuses with cystic lung disease (CLD). The transverse section of the thorax was analyzed at the level of the 4-chamber view of the heart. L/T was calculated as the bilateral normal lung area divided by the thoracic area.

Exogenous administration of gangliosides induced neuronal differentiation with prominent neuritogenesis in human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells in vitro. Neuritogenesis was characterized by ruffling of the cell membrane, the development of lamellipodia and filopodia, and the subsequent elongation and branching of the neurites ultrastructurally. Both axons and neurites were identified.

Expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and numbers of nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) were studied by immunohistochemistry and the silver staining technique in 99 meningiomas and related to histopathologic grading, recurrence and their predictive value for recurrence. The results indicated that there was a significant correlation between PCNA or AgNORs and histopathologic grading of meningiomas. Slightly higher expression of PCNA in atypical meningiomas was correlated with the increased recurrence rate; however, expression of PCNA and numbers of AgNORs in meningiomas are not reliable criteria to predict tumor recurrence.

AIDS-associated cryptosporidiosis has been associated with severe, watery diarrhea and with multifocal biliary stricture. Gastric involvement has not been reported prominently. We report here the case of a 28-yr-old AIDS patient who developed typical watery diarrhea, followed by subtotal gastric obstruction secondary to antral stricturing.

Fourteen cases of typhoid fever complicating pregnancy are presented. The diagnosis was confirmed by blood cultures in 13 patients and by a rising Widal titer in one. Stool cultures were positive in only two out of five patients; urine cultures in 12 patients and cervical cultures in five patients were all negative.
