School nurses from the Klein Independent School District in Harris County, Texas, have educated students, some as young as kindergarteners, on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and how to recognize and use automatic external defibrillators and provide basic first aid. Through a collaboration with community partners and CPR-certified high school students, these school nurses are empowering the next generation with lifesaving skills.

Introduction: Pediatric residents encounter issues related to school health (SH) throughout their training, particularly in their continuity clinics, and often serve as liaisons between a patient's medical home and school environment. However, there is currently a paucity of formal education on SH for pediatric residents to prepare them for this role.
Methods: We created a 3-hour interactive learning conference that was delivered to four groups of six to eight pediatric residents during their intern year by a multidisciplinary team.

The purpose of this study was to examine the role of public schools in supporting CSHCN through in-depth key informant interviews. For this qualitative study, the authors interviewed 17 key informants to identify key themes, provide recommendations, and generate hypotheses for further statewide survey of school nurse services.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFPurpose: The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention monitors health-risk behaviors of adolescents in United States, which include (1) violence; (2) tobacco use; (3) alcohol and other drug use; (4) sexual behaviors contributing to unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases; (5) inadequate physical activity; and (6) unhealthy dietary behaviors. We reviewed original research published in peer-reviewed journals between 1985 and 2010 to synthesize evidence about the association of adolescent health-risk behaviors and academic achievement.
Methods: Using predetermined selection criteria, 122 articles were included that used at least one variable for health-risk behaviors and also for academic achievement.

Background: The Council of Chief State School Officers' State Collaborative on Assessment and Student Standards Health Education Assessment Project (SCASS-HEAP) allows states to pool financial and human resources to develop effective ready-to-use health education assessment resources through a collaborative process. The purpose of this article is to describe the extensive ongoing development of the SCASS-HEAP and its benefits for important stakeholders in health and education.
Methods: A review of the products from the first decade of the SCASS-HEAP was undertaken.
