We describe a case of a 53-year-old female who presented for elective esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) and eventually needed surgical intervention to remove a plastic fork that she accidentally swallowed twenty years prior while in prison. This article highlights approaches to retrieving a foreign object within the stomach via endoscopy, the importance of recognizing the risks of endoscopy, and serves as a reminder that we must be aware of the social determinants of health that pertain to our patients.

Background: Glenoid bone loss presents a complex challenge in the management of patients with glenohumeral osteoarthritis (GHOA) undergoing Reverse Shoulder Arthroplasty (RSA). Eccentric reaming and bone grafting have been utilized to address this issue but are associated with their own set of challenges. This study explores the effectiveness of augmented glenoid baseplate RSA in addressing glenoid bone loss.

Background: Weight estimation is required in adult patients when weight-based medication must be administered during emergency care, as measuring weight is often not possible. Inaccurate estimations may lead to inaccurate drug dosing, which may cause patient harm. High-tech 3D camera systems driven by artificial intelligence might be the solution to this problem.

Traditionally, emergency medicine (EM) residency programs teach non-adult emergency department activities (such as pediatric EM, point-of-care ultrasound [PoCUS], emergency medical services, and others) in a block format. In this way, a resident may have a 1-month pediatric EM rotation and then not have any further pediatric EM exposure until their next pediatric rotation 6‒9 months later. Furthermore, some rotations are only allotted for 1-month during the entire residency.

We report the case of a 14-year-old patient with a known history of Crohn's disease who was incidentally diagnosed with an asymptomatic cecal lipoma. A routine surveillance colonoscopy as part of the management of the patient's Crohn's Disease revealed a well-defined, submucosal, yellowish mass in the patient's cecum. Histopathological examination of a biopsy specimen revealed submucosal adipose tissue, consistent with the endoscopic images showing the characteristic appearance of the lipoma.

Outcomes following revision reverse shoulder arthroplasty for infection.

J Shoulder Elbow Surg

November 2024

Palm Beach Shoulder Service Atlantis Orthopaedics, Palm Beach, FL, USA; JFK/University of Miami Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program, Palm Beach, FL, USA. Electronic address:

Background: In comparison to primary reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) procedures, revision arthroplasty can be a longer and more complex procedure leading to an increased risk of complications. The reported rates of infection in primary RSA range from 1% to 19% and the cost impact on patients and health care systems is significant, leading to multiple revision surgeries. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the postoperative outcomes, complications, and revision rates for revision reverse shoulder arthroplasty (rRSA) due to infection compared with rRSA for noninfectious causes.

Introduction: The objective was to develop and refine a version of the Prolonged-Loss Grief-12 (PG-12) specific to caregivers of people living with dementia. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was performed to test the fit of the data from the caregivers and to assess the factor structure of the PG-12 in order to evaluate pre-loss grief accurately by identifying relevant items and eliminating items that are not appropriate for caregivers of persons with dementia.

Methods: A total of 699 eligible caregivers of persons living with dementia (PLWDs) were recruited through relevant dementia associations and organizations.

New Preoperative Spinal Cord Ischemia Risk Stratification Model for Patients Undergoing Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair.

Vasc Endovascular Surg

August 2020

Department of Surgery, Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center/West Virginia University, Charleston Area Medical Center, Vascular Center of Excellence, WV, USA.

Purpose: Our objective was to determine significant predictors of spinal cord ischemia (SCI) following Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair (TEVAR) and to further develop a simple and clinically orientated risk score model.

Methods: A retrospective review of data from the Society of Vascular Surgery/Vascular Quality Initiative national data set was performed for all patients undergoing TEVAR from January, 2014 to June 2018. Preoperative demographics, procedure-related variables, and clinical details related to SCI were examined.
