Twenty-three species of the genera Aspistomella Hendel, 1909, Polyteloptera Hendel, 1909, and Ulivellia Speiser, 1929 occurring in South America (Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, and Brazil) form a monophyletic lineage sharing certain combinations of plesiomorphies and apomorphies with similar larval biology. The name Aspistomella Hendel, 1909 is a new senior subjective synonym of Paraphyola Hendel, 1909. The group of genera is extended by the addition of six known species, Aspistomella angustifrons (Hendel, 1909) comb.

Freshwater ecosystems in Lithuania are threatened by the introduction of invasive fish species including , , , and . Data on helminth parasites of these fishes have not been comprehensively studied, with only two reports on parasites of from the Curonian Lagoon and Baltic Sea, Lithuania. We examined 278 fish individuals representing 4 invasive species from 13 waterbodies.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed changes in strongylid worm communities in domestic horses over two decades of consistent anthelmintic (deworming) treatments, comparing data from 2004 to 2023.
  • It involved 39 horses from two farms in Ukraine and found a significant reduction in the number of strongylid species, moving from 21 species in 2004 to only 13 in 2023, with only small strongylids present.
  • The findings indicated decreased species richness and diversity, and the dominance of the species C. nassatus, highlighting a shift in the strongylid community structure due to the treatments.

Interactions between a host organism and its associated microbiota, including symbiotic bacteria, play a crucial role in host adaptation to changing environmental conditions. Antarctica provides a unique environment for the establishment and maintenance of symbiotic relationships. One of the most extensively studied symbiotic bacteria in invertebrates is Wolbachia pipientis, which is associated with a wide variety of invertebrates.

Trichinella pseudospiralis belongs to the non-encapsulated clade of the genus and its epidemiology is influenced by various biotic and abiotic factors. The role of different animal species in the spread and epidemiology of the parasite is still not well understood and further research is needed in the areas where its occurrence has been recorded. In Slovakia, T.

The hepatic nematode is a zoonotic parasite primarily parasitising small mammals, but it can infect a wide range of mammal species, including humans. Due to its specific life cycle and transmission pattern, it is one of the least studied helminths in the world. The only documented findings of from Slovakia (former Czechoslovakia) come from the 60s and 70s of the 20th Century, including nine human cases of the infection reported .

Article Synopsis
  • The Black Sea, a semi-enclosed inland sea, features anoxic deep waters and is home to various marine mammals, including local subspecies of dolphins and harbour porpoises.
  • Research teams from Bulgaria, Georgia, Romania, Türkiye, and Ukraine deployed F-PODs between September 2020 and October 2022 to study the acoustic activity of harbour porpoises, uncovering strong seasonal and diel patterns across different regions.
  • Findings indicated that porpoises in the southeastern Black Sea showed increased acoustic activity during the spring, aligning with the seasonal migration of anchovies, while western and northwestern porpoises demonstrated distinct bimodal and daylight activity patterns linked to the feeding habits of sprat.

Cetaceans have evolved unique limb structures, such as flippers, due to genetic changes during their transition to aquatic life. However, the full understanding of the genetic and evolutionary mechanisms behind these changes is still developing. By examining 25 limb-related protein-coding genes across various mammalian species, we compared genetic changes between aquatic mammals, like whales, and other mammals with unique limb structures such as bats, rodents and elephants.

China - Hebei Research Center of the Basic Discipline Cell Biology; Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Molecular and Cellular Biology, 050024 Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province, P.R. China.

Article Synopsis
  • The Heteracanthocephalidae is a rare family of parasitic worms, known as acanthocephalans, primarily found in fish, with unclear evolutionary and phylogenetic relationships within the Echinorhynchida order.
  • This study provides the first complete mitochondrial genome sequence for Aspersentis megarhynchus, including 36 genes, highlighting its unique gene arrangement and characteristics among acanthocephalans.
  • The findings indicate a strong phylogenetic relationship between Heteracanthocephalidae and Echinorhynchidae, supporting their classification within Echinorhynchida.

Movement is a key means by which animals cope with variable environments. As they move, animals construct individual niches composed of the environmental conditions they experience. Niche axes may vary over time and covary with one another as animals make tradeoffs between competing needs.

The primary aim of this study was to compare the in vivo responses to orally administered doses of albendazole (5 mg/kg body weight) between experimentally infected sheep and goats. Fifty-four Improved Valachian lambs and 54 Saanen goat kids were split into six groups of nine animals. The sheep and goats were infected with larvae of the gastrointestinal nematode parasite Haemonchus contortus containing 10, 20, 30, 40, 60, and 80 % of the isotype-1 β-tubulin gene codon 200 alleles previously shown to be associated with benzimidazole (BZ)-resistance.

Freshwater turtles are often used as terrarium pets, especially juveniles of exotic species. At the adult stage they are often released by their owners into the wild despite their high invasion potential. In Europe these thermophilic potentially invasive alien species occupy the habitats of the native European pond turtle Emys orbicularis (Linnaeus, 1758), with new records from the wild being made specifically in Eastern Europe (Latvia and Ukraine) during recent decades.

Marine and freshwater mammalian predators and fish samples, retrieved from environmental specimen banks (ESBs), natural history museum (NHMs) and other scientific collections, were analysed by LIFE APEX partners for a wide range of legacy and emerging contaminants (2545 in total). Network analysis was used to visualize the chemical occurrence data and reveal the predominant chemical mixtures for the freshwater and marine environments. For this purpose, a web tool was created to explore these chemical mixtures in predator-prey pairs.

The chytrid Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) is a widespread fungus causing amphibian declines across the globe. Although data on Bd occurrence in Eastern Europe are scarce, a recent species distribution model (SDM) for Bd reported that western and north-western parts of Ukraine are highly suitable to the pathogen. We verified the SDM-predicted range of Bd in Ukraine by sampling amphibians across the country and screening for Bd using qPCR.

Article Synopsis
  • Ticks are ectoparasites that can transmit harmful pathogens to humans and animals, and this study focused on how altitude and soil pH affect the presence of these pathogens in tick populations in Slovakia.* -
  • The research found that higher altitudes generally increased the likelihood of certain pathogens in ticks, while soil pH also played a role in pathogen occurrence for specific microorganisms, but various factors influence this relationship beyond just altitude and soil pH.* -
  • Although the study's regression models provided insights into factors affecting pathogen presence in ticks, they explained only a small amount of the variability, suggesting that other unknown influences are at play.*

The role of wildlife in the epidemiology of tick-borne diseases in Slovakia.

Curr Res Parasitol Vector Borne Dis

June 2024

Instituto de Patobiología Veterinaria (INTA-CONICET), Instituto Nacional de Tecnología Agropecuaria (INTA), Hurlingham, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Article Synopsis
  • Tick-borne diseases (TBD) are a significant concern for both human and animal health, particularly in Slovakia, where studies have mainly investigated small mammals as reservoirs for these pathogens.
  • Wild animals like ungulates, hedgehogs, and carnivores not only host ticks but also help monitor the presence of tick-borne pathogens (TBP) in the environment, especially as they expand into urban and suburban areas.
  • High infection rates of TBP have been found in certain wildlife populations, contributing to our understanding of how these animals act as carriers and reservoirs, which can aid in managing and reducing the risk of TBD.
