Background: Recommendations for cardiac surgery advocate for antibiotic prophylaxis for up to 48 hour after surgery. However, recent reports found a significant reduction in surgical site infection with extended duration. We evaluated the effect of the type of prophylactic antibiotics and administration durations on the postoperative surgical site infection rate following cardiac surgery in adults.

Interventricular septum pellet retention after air-gunshot injury in a persistently asymptomatic patient is a rare, clinically significant occurrence. Management involved monitoring, echocardiography, and computed tomography scans. After risk-benefit analysis, we favored a nonsurgical management without prophylactic antibiotics or colchicine.

On a global scale, lung cancer is acknowledged to be the major driver of cancer death attributable to treatment challenges and poor prognosis. Classical cancer treatment regimens, such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy, can be used to treat lung cancer, but the appended adverse effects limit them. Because of the numerous side effects associated with these treatment modalities, it is crucial to strive to develop novel and better strategies for managing lung cancer.

Background And Objectives: Following cardiac surgery, acute kidney injury (AKI) is a well-known complication that increases morbidity and mortality. This study was carried out to determine the factors associated with acute kidney injury and to assess the predictive value of three predictive scores for the development of AKI post-cardiac surgery in the Saudi community.
Methods: In this retrospective study, the medical records of patients aged 18 years and above who underwent cardiac surgery on cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) at Saud Albabtin Cardiac Center between January 2018 and March 2021 were reviewed.

Objectives: Dyslipidemia is a prevalent condition with significant morbidity and mortality across the world, including in the Arabian Gulf. The present study aimed to describe the characteristics of patients receiving evolocumab in clinical practice.
Methods: ZERBINI was a multi-country, observational, retrospective/prospective study of subjects receiving evolocumab as part of routine clinical management of their hyperlipidemia.

Introduction: Bleeding after transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is associated with increased mortality. The predictive value of the HAS-BLED score in TAVR patients is still to be evaluated. We assessed the value of the HAS-BLED score to predict in-hospital bleeding and mortality after TAVR and the impact of diferent renal impairment definitions on the predictive value of the score system.

Background And Aims: Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a common autosomal dominant disorder that can result in premature atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Limited data are available worldwide about the prevalence and management of FH. Here, we aimed to estimate the prevalence and management of patients with FH in five Arabian Gulf countries (Saudi Arabia, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Bahrain).

Heart failure (HF) is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide and negatively impacts quality of life, healthcare costs, and longevity. Although data on HF in the Arab population are scarce, recently developed regional registries are a step forward to evaluating the quality of current patient care and providing an overview of the clinical picture. Despite the burden of HF in Saudi Arabia, there are currently no standardized protocols or guidelines for the management of patients with acute or chronic heart failure.

Lateral medullary syndrome (LMS), also known as Wallenberg's syndrome, PICA syndrome, results from occlusion of the posterior inferior cerebellar artery, with associated infarction of parts of medulla oblongata, and cerebellum on the ipsilateral side. It often manifests as various patterns of sensory, motor, and autonomic deficits. While sensorimotor dysfunction presents as a predicted pattern of clinical signs and symptoms, autonomic dysfunction is usually less clinically apparent, and can be easily mistaken as a concomitant pathology in the end organ it affects.

Pulmonary vein (PV) radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is an effective, curative technique for selected group of patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) refractory to antiarrhythmic drugs. However, pulmonary vein stenosis (PVS) is a potential complication which may present clinically as non-specific respiratory symptoms that often under-recognized or misdiagnosed leading to progression of low-grade stenosis to complete occlusion if not treated with timely intervention.

Background: Several risk scores have been developed for acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients, but their use is limited by their complexity. The new Canada Acute Coronary Syndrome (C-ACS) risk score is a simple risk-assessment tool for ACS patients. This study assessed the performance of the C-ACS risk score in predicting hospital mortality in a contemporary Middle Eastern ACS cohort.

Background: Supraventricular cardiac arrhythmias are the most common rhythm disturbances in patients following thoracic surgery. The purpose of our study was to determine which of the clinical parameters are the most valuable in predicting postoperative atrial fibrillation (AF) after lung surgery.
Methods: Retrospective analysis was carried out on 987 patients after noncardiac thoracic surgery to define the prevalence, associated risk factors, and clinical course of postoperative arrhythmias.

Background: Postoperative atrial fibrillation is the most common arrhythmia after coronary artery bypass grafting, with a reported incidence of 10% to 60%. Preoperative clinical and echocardiographic data, especially the atrial electromechanical interval, predict postoperative atrial fibrillation in elective coronary artery bypass patients.
Methods: A prospective study evaluated preoperative clinical and echocardiographic data in 192 patients who underwent elective coronary artery bypass from 2010 to 2012.
