Perspectives of oncology nurses on peer support for patients with cancer.

Purpose: To understand the perspectives of oncology nurses on peer support for patients with cancer and the role of oncology nurses in its provision.

Method: Thematic semi-structured interviews of 10 oncology nurses working in a single university hospital were conducted. The data were analysed using content analysis.

A high lean body mass is not protecting from type 2 diabetes in the presence of a high body fat mass.

Aim: Most studies examining the associations between body composition and type 2 diabetes have been cross-sectional with prevalent diabetes diagnosis or they have analyzed only fat or lean body mass. Hence, the combined effect of fat and lean body mass on the risk of developing type 2 diabetes remains unclear. We investigated whether baseline lean and fat body mass taken simultaneously into account are associated with incidence of type 2 diabetes over a 15-year follow-up in older adults.

Daily functioning support - a qualitative exploration of rehabilitative approach in acute hospitalised care.

Objectives: Hospitalised patients are at risk of temporary or permanent loss of functioning which impacts their future independence. Implementation of a rehabilitative approach in everyday nursing in the acute care setting may produce good therapeutic results and promote independent daily living of patients. Thus, the aim of the study was to explore and understand the patterns of a rehabilitative approach in acute hospital wards from the perspective of interdisciplinary team members.

Consistent practice for pressure ulcer prevention in long-term older people care: A quasi-experimental intervention study.

Background: Consistent practice, an agreed clinical practice based on evidence, has been considered as a base for effective provision of quality and safety of care. As a result, patients have an equal quality of care regardless of the organisation or worker. However, despite the international guidelines, pressure ulcer prevention practices vary in long-term older people care.

Induced abortion has no psychological effect on early parental self-efficacy and psychological well-being: The Steps to the Healthy Development and Well-being of Children study.

Introduction: An association between a history of induced abortion and psychological well-being post-abortion has been demonstrated in recently published studies, which is contrary to the findings of existing known high-quality studies.

Material And Methods: An evaluation was conducted to determine whether a history of abortion affected the psychological well-being and parental self-efficacy of first-time mothers and their partners; this assessment was performed when the child was aged 18 months. Questionnaires were administered to 492 first-time mothers, 37 of whom had a history of abortion, and their partners (n = 436).

Alexithymia is a personality construct characterized by difficulties in identifying and verbalizing feelings, a restricted imagination, and an externally oriented thinking style. As alexithymia shows marked overlap with depression, its independent nature as a personality construct is still being debated. The etiology of alexithymia is unknown, although childhood emotional neglect and attachment formation are thought to play important roles.

The purpose of this study is to describe nurses' views of what supports safe medication administration in the current electronic medication administration system. Data was collected at the turn of 2014-2015 and open-ended answers were inductively analyzed using content analysis. The system's usefulness, good usability, and the feature that there is extra information available on medications and the patient-specific information needed in medication administration are elements that support safe medication administration.

An observational study of technical and non-technical skills in advanced life support in the clinical setting.

Objective: Technical skills (TS) and non-technical skills (NTS) are the primary elements ensuring patient safety during advanced life support (ALS) and effective crisis resource management (CRM). Both skills are needed to perform high-quality ALS, though they are traditionally practiced separately. The evidence of the association between NTS and TS in high-quality ALS performance is insufficient.

Parental reflective functioning (PRF) refers to a parent's effort to see his/her child as a separate individual person from early on, and to be curious of the child's own thoughts and feelings. Parenting abilities are affected by the parent's emotion regulation and emotional availability. Alexithymia as a personality construct with emotional deficits and poor imagination could potentially affect also PRF, but studies on parental alexithymia are still scarce.

Background: Usability associates with patient safety and quality of care. This article reports results from nation-wide usability-focused survey studies for physicians and nurses in Finland. Earlier research has shown dissatisfaction and serious deficiencies, which hamper the efficient use of health information systems (HIS); however, evaluation studies covering the viewpoints of both user groups are practically lacking.

The associations between the final clinical practicum elements and the transition experience of early career nurses: A cross-sectional study.

The final clinical practicum before graduation prepares nursing students for the transition from a student to a nurse, but the essential elements of the final clinical practicum that enhance successful transition are not known. We examined the associations of five elements of the final clinical practicum with four indicators of the transition experience in new nurses. We also tested whether psychosocial work characteristics modified these associations.

Enhanced coordination of care to reduce medication risks in older home care clients in primary care: a randomized controlled trial.

Background: As populations are aging, a growing number of home care clients are frail and use multiple, complex medications. Combined with the lack of coordination of care this may pose uncontrolled polypharmacy and potential patient safety risks. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of a care coordination intervention on medication risks identified in drug regimens of older home care clients over a one-year period.
