Purpose: This study proposes a process for detecting slices with bone marrow edema (BME), a typical finding of axSpA, using MRI scans as the input. This process does not require manual input of ROIs and provides the results of the judgment of the presence or absence of BME on a slice and the location of edema as the rationale for the judgment.

Methods: First, the signal intensity of the MRI scans of the sacroiliac joint was normalized to reduce the variation in signal values between scans.

Background: With COVID-19 becoming a common disease, primary care facilities such as clinics are required to efficiently triage patients at high risk of severe illness within the constraints of limited medical resources. However, existing COVID-19 severity risk scores require detailed medical history assessments, such as evaluating the severity of pneumonia via chest CT and accounting for past and comorbid conditions. Therefore, they may not be suitable for practical use in clinical settings with limited medical resources, including personnel and equipment.

Article Synopsis
  • * Among the patients, 25% exhibited slowly progressive MPA, characterized by less severe disease activity markers and a slower decline in kidney function (eGFR).
  • * The findings suggest that some MPA cases can progress slowly, potentially indicating a need for specific diagnostic approaches, such as measuring anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies in cases with urinary abnormalities.

Purpose: The prognostic value of the lymphocyte-to-monocyte (LMR) ratio has been reported for various cancers, including colorectal cancer (CRC). The insertion of colonic stents is considered effective for patients with surgically indicated obstructive CRC, but their LMR can vary depending on factors such as inflammation associated with stent dilation and improvement of obstructive colitis. However, the usefulness of the LMR in patients with obstructive CRC and colonic stents and the optimal timing for its measurement remain unclear.

Introduction: The administration of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) mRNA vaccines has played a pivotal role in managing the COVID-19 pandemic. Nonetheless, there have been instances of atypical immune reactions to the vaccine, notably among patients with autoimmune inflammatory rheumatic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

Aim: This study was designed to analyze the cytokine profiles of RA patients who suffered from severe or fatal disease flares after receiving the SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccine, to unravel the immunological bases for such responses.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzes mortality rates in patients who achieved sustained virological response (SVR) after receiving interferon-free direct-acting antiviral (IFN-free DAA) therapy, emphasizing the significance of non-liver-related deaths.
  • Three cohorts were examined: those without advanced fibrosis or prior hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), those with advanced fibrosis but no prior HCC, and those with a history of HCC after curative treatment.
  • Findings indicated that while both non-HCC cohorts had comparable mortality rates to the general population, the cohort with a history of HCC had higher overall mortality, highlighting the need to address non-liver-related health issues in all SVR patients.

Lewy body disease (LBD) is characterized by the appearance of Lewy neurites and Lewy bodies, which are predominantly composed of α-synuclein. Notably, the cardiac plexus (CP) is one of the main targets of LBD research. Although previous studies have reported obvious differences in the frequency of Lewy body pathology (LBP) in the CP, none of them have confirmed whether LBP preferably appears in any part of the CP.

Article Synopsis
  • - A 27-year-old woman experienced recurring knee pain, and tests showed minimal inflammation but structures similar to fat in her knee joint.
  • - Imaging techniques confirmed the presence of high-intensity signals from these fat-like structures, leading to a diagnosis of lipoma arborescens (LA), for which she underwent synovectomy.
  • - Pathology revealed cell growth patterns without T-cell involvement and lower cytokine levels compared to rheumatoid arthritis, suggesting more research is needed to understand LA's cause.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to examine how seasonal and environmental factors affect the onset of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV) in patients with specific types of vasculitis.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 454 patients to determine any season-related patterns in AAV onset, finding that AAV was less common in autumn compared to other seasons, and certain ANCA types (like MPO-ANCA) showed significant seasonal variation.
  • Additionally, the study revealed that living in rural areas was linked to PR3-ANCA positivity and related lung issues, indicating that rural residency impacts AAV development independently of seasonal triggers.
