Long non-coding RNAs as prognostic biomarkers in non-muscle invasive bladder cancer: A systematic review.

Narra J

December 2024

Division of Urology, Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Traditional prognostic tools for non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) often overestimate progression and recurrence risks, underscoring the need for more precise biomarkers. While long non-coding ribonucleic acids (lncRNAs) have been reviewed in bladder cancer, no review has focused on NMIBC. The aim of this study was to address this gap by investigating the role of lncRNAs in predicting NMIBC survival and progression.

The coexistence of depression and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) can significantly worsen disease prognosis and lower quality of life. Emerging evidence suggests that vitamin D deficiency contributes to the progression of T2DM and is closely associated with the development of depression. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of cholecalciferol on depression in patients with T2DM, exploring its mechanisms by analyzing its impact on C-peptide, serotonin, and neurotrophin-3 levels.

Analysis of Circulating Plasma MicroRNA Profile in Low-Grade and High-Grade Glioma - A Cross-Sectional Study.

F1000Res

January 2025

Department of Neurology, Faculty of Medicine, Public Health and Nursing, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Dr. Sardjito General Hospital, Special Region of Yogyakarta, 55281, Indonesia.

Background: Glioma is the second most common type of brain tumor, accounting for 24% of all brain tumor cases. The current diagnostic procedure is through an invasive tissue sampling to obtain histopathological analysis, however, not all patients are able to undergo a high-risk procedure. Circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) are considered as promising biomarkers for glioma due to their sensitivity, specificity, and non-invasive properties.

Biventricular dysfunction predicts mortality in ST elevation myocardial infarction patients with cardiogenic shock.

Egypt Heart J

January 2025

Department of Cardiology and Vascular Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing, Universitas Gadjah Mada/Dr. Sardjito General Hospital, Jalan Farmako Sekip Utara, Yogyakarta, 55281, Indonesia.

Background: The incidence of mortality in patients with cardiogenic shock due to ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) remains high even with prompt reperfusion therapy. Ventricular systolic dysfunction is the primary condition causing cardiogenic shock in STEMI. Studies have been widely conducted on the left ventricle (LV) and right ventricle (RV) systolic dysfunction related to mortality events.

Background: Chemotherapy has a substantial role in decreasing the risk of recurrence and mortality in breast cancer (BC) in a dose-dependent manner where a low relative dose intensity (RDI) is associated with unfavorable outcomes. Several baseline clinicopathological factors, including pro-inflammatory biomarkers, were found to be significant determinants of low RDI. This study aimed to explore the occurrence of low RDI and its influencing factors in women with BC.

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection with manifestations that can mimic other diseases, leading to misdiagnosis. Annular syphilis is a rare atypical secondary syphilitic lesion that seldomly involves the face. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) coinfection can increasingly lead to atypical manifestations of syphilis and complicate the diagnosis.

Predictive Factors of Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy in Breast Cancer: A Decision Tree Model Approach.

JCO Glob Oncol

November 2024

Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology, Department of Internal Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Public Health and Nursing, Universitas Gadjah Mada/Dr Sardjito General Hospital, Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Article Synopsis
  • Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) negatively impacts the quality of life for breast cancer patients, leading to a study that aimed to develop a prediction model using the classification and regression tree (CART) algorithm.
  • The research involved 170 breast cancer patients and used a patient-reported assessment to identify CIPN occurrences, ultimately finding that high C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, BMI, and marital status are key predictors of CIPN.
  • The CART model achieved an accuracy of 65.9% and highlighted the importance of CRP levels and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratios in predicting CIPN, suggesting this model could be useful for developing individualized patient care strategies in the future.

Electronic address:

Objective: Ultrahigh frequencies (UHF) have been shown to selectively suppress the sensory pathway with a rapid onset and prolonged effect compared with low frequencies. Few studies have explored the feasibility of UHF electrical stimulation in treating overactive bladder. This study aimed to investigate whether bladder overactivity could be inhibited by UHF stimulation at the L6 nerve root.

A Case of CUP with Malignant Pleural Effusion: Overcoming Diagnostic and Therapeutic Hurdles with Chemotherapy.

Case Rep Oncol

October 2024

Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology, Department of Internal Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing, Gadjah Mada University/Dr. Sardjito Hospital, Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Article Synopsis
  • Cancers of unknown primary (CUPs) pose diagnostic difficulties due to their unidentifiable origins and poor prognosis when associated with massive pleural effusion (MPE).
  • A 62-year-old woman with MPE underwent fluid extraction and was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma, raising concerns for gynecological cancer, despite imaging showing no primary malignancy.
  • Chemotherapy with carboplatin and paclitaxel improved the patient's performance status and reduced symptoms, suggesting that initial treatment can be effective even in patients with poor health conditions.

Article Synopsis
  • This study examines early-onset colorectal cancer (EOCRC) in Indonesia, finding that EOCRC patients mostly have higher education, are single, and tend to be underweight compared to those with average-onset colorectal cancer (AOCRC).
  • Despite these differences, the overall survival rates for EOCRC (34.2%) and AOCRC (36.9%) are relatively similar.
  • The research emphasizes the need for further studies to explore risk factors and social determinants affecting EOCRC, which is becoming a significant public health concern.
