For the first time, anisotropic hydrogel material with a highly oriented structure was obtained by the chemical reaction of polymer-analogous transformation of chitosan glycolate-chitosan base using triethanolamine (TEA) as a neutralizing reagent. Tangential bands or concentric rings, depending on the reaction conditions, represent the structural anisotropy of the hydrogel. The formation kinetics and the ratio of the positions of these periodic structures are described by the Liesegang regularities.

The study of functions, mechanisms of generation, and pathways of movement of cerebral fluids has a long history, but the last decade has been especially productive. The proposed glymphatic hypothesis, which suggests a mechanism of the brain waste removal system (BWRS), caused an active discussion on both the criticism of some of the perspectives and our intensive study of new experimental facts. It was especially found that the intensity of the metabolite clearance changes significantly during the transition between sleep and wakefulness.

Astrocytes have been in the limelight of active research for about 3 decades now. Over this period, ideas about their function and role in the nervous system have evolved from simple assistance in energy supply and homeostasis maintenance to a complex informational and metabolic hub that integrates data on local neuronal activity, sensory and arousal context, and orchestrates many crucial processes in the brain. Rapid progress in experimental techniques and data analysis produces a growing body of data, which can be used as a foundation for formulation of new hypotheses, building new refined mathematical models, and ultimately should lead to a new level of understanding of the contribution of astrocytes to the cognitive tasks performed by the brain.

Electromagnetic theory predicts that the optimal value of the localized plasmon resonance (LPR) wavelength for the maximal SERS enhancement factor (EF) is half the sum of the laser and Raman wavelengths. For small Raman shifts, the theoretical EF scales as the fourth power of the local field. However, experimental data often disagree with these theoretical conclusions, leaving the question of choosing the optimal plasmon resonance for the maximal SERS signal unresolved.

We analyse the steady-state thermal regime of a one-dimensional triode resonant tunnelling structure. The high currents generated by resonant tunnelling produce a large amount of heat that could damage the structure. Establishing the conditions under which it can operate at optimum efficiency is therefore a problem of great relevance for applications.

Ex vivo porcine lung immersed in e-liquid was investigated in-depth using confocal Raman micro-spectroscopy to assess the e-liquid influence on the lung. It was found that lung-related Raman band intensities at 1002, 1548, 1618 and 1655 cm increased after first and second treatments except the surface, which was attributed to the well-known optical clearing (OC) effect due to alveoli filling with e-liquid resulting in light scattering reduction. The autofluorescence enhancement was explained by oxidative stress induced in lung during exposure to e-liquid.

There is strong evidence that augmentation of the brain's waste disposal system via stimulation of the meningeal lymphatics might be a promising therapeutic target for preventing neurological diseases. In our previous studies, we demonstrated activation of the brain's waste disposal system using transcranial photostimulation (PS) with a laser 1267 nm, which stimulates the direct generation of singlet oxygen in the brain tissues. With the prevalence of glucosamine- and chondroitin-containing dietary supplements for people with osteoarthritis in the marketplace, it is important to have an accurate and reproducible analytical method for the quantitation of these compounds in finished products. NMR spectroscopic method based both on low- (80 MHz) and high- (500-600 MHz) field NMR instrumentation was established, compared and validated for the determination of chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine in dietary supplements. The proposed method was applied for analysis of 20 different dietary supplements.

Intraventricular hemorrhage is one of the most fatal forms of brain injury that is a common complication of premature infants. However, the therapy of this type of hemorrhage is limited, and new strategies are needed to reduce hematoma expansion. Here we show that the meningeal lymphatics is a pathway to remove red blood cells from the brain's ventricular system of male human, adult and newborn rodents and is a target for non-invasive transcranial near infrared photobiomodulation.

Bacterial infections are usually found in the stomach and the first part of the small intestine in association with various pathologies, including ulcers, inflammatory diseases, and sometimes cancer. Over sixty years, laser technologies have undergone a technological revolution and become one of the main tools in biomedicine, particularly in neuroscience, neurodegenerative diseases and brain tumors. Glioblastoma is the most lethal form of brain cancer, with very limited treatment options and a poor prognosis. In this study on rats, we demonstrate that glioblastoma (GBM) growth can be suppressed by photosensitizer-free laser treatment (PS-free-LT) using a quantum-dot-based 1267 nm laser diode.

We explore numerically the impact of additive Gaussian noise on the spatiotemporal dynamics of ring networks of nonlocally coupled chaotic maps. The local dynamics of network nodes is described by the logistic map, the Ricker map, and the Henon map. 2D distributions of the probability of observing chimera states are constructed in terms of the coupling strength and the noise intensity and for several choices of the local dynamics parameters.

Typically, the period-doubling bifurcations exhibited by nonlinear dissipative systems are observed when varying systems' parameters. In contrast, the period-doubling bifurcations considered in the current research are induced by changing the initial conditions, whereas parameter values are fixed. Thus, the studied bifurcations can be classified as the period-doubling bifurcations without parameters.

An experimental laboratory set of samples of composite heterogeneous anion-exchange membranes was obtained by us for the development of our original method of polycondensation filling. Anion-exchange membranes were prepared on plasma-treated and non-plasma-treated polyester fiber fabrics. The fabric was treated with low-temperature argon plasma at a power of 400 W for 10 min at a pressure of 5 × 10 mbar.

This hinders our understanding of metriorhynchid biodiversity across these continuous seaways, and our ability to investigate provincialism.

We consider spatially localized spiking activity patterns, so-called bumps, in ensembles of bistable spiking oscillators. The bistability consists in the coexistence of self-sustained spiking dynamics and a quiescent steady-state regime. We show numerically that the processes of growth or contraction of such patterns can be controlled by varying the intensity of multiplicative noise.
