Optical clearing of the lung tissue aims to make it more transparent to light by minimizing light scattering, thus allowing reconstruction of the three-dimensional structure of the tissue with a much better resolution. This is of great importance for monitoring of viral infection impact on the alveolar structure of the tissue and oxygen transport. Optical clearing agents (OCAs) can provide not only lesser light scattering of tissue components but also may influence the molecular transport function of the alveolar membrane.

Light absorption and scattering in biological tissue are significant variables in optical imaging technologies and regulating them enhances optical imaging quality. Optical clearing methods can decrease light scattering and improve optical imaging quality to some extent but owing to their limited efficacy and the potential influence of optical clearing agents on tissue functioning, complementing approaches must be investigated. In this paper, a new strategy of optical clearing proposed as time-dependent or temporal tissue optical clearing (TTOC) is described.

Alcohol intoxication has a dangerous effect on human health and is often associated with a risk of catastrophic injuries and alcohol-related crimes. A demand to address this problem adheres to the design of new sensor systems for the real-time monitoring of exhaled breath. We introduce a new sensor system based on a porous hydrophilic layer of submicron silica particles (SiO SMPs) placed on a one-dimensional photonic crystal made of TaO/SiO dielectric layers whose operation relies on detecting changes in the position of surface wave resonance during capillary condensation in pores.

A technology for the formation and bonding with a substrate of hybrid carbon nanostructures from single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) by laser radiation is proposed. Molecular dynamics modeling by the real-time time-dependent density functional tight-binding (TD-DFTB) method made it possible to reveal the mechanism of field emission centers formation in carbon nanostructures layers. Laser radiation stimulates the formation of graphene-nanotube covalent contacts and also induces a dipole moment of hybrid nanostructures, which ensures their orientation along the force lines of the radiation field.

The accurate estimation of skin and skull optical properties over a wide wavelength range of laser radiation has great importance in optogenetics and other related applications. In the present work, using the Kubelka-Munk model, finite-element solution of the diffusion equation, inverse adding-doubling (IAD), and Monte-Carlo simulation, we estimated the refractive index, absorption and scattering coefficients, penetration depth, and the optical fluence distribution in rabbit head tissues ex vivo, after dividing the heads into three types of tissues with an average thickness of skin of 1.1 mm, skull of 1 mm, and brain of 3 mm.

A fundamental limitation of the spectral response of laser-pumped fluorescent nanostructured media was considered in terms of a probabilistic model establishing the relationship between the enhancement factor of a spectral quality and characteristic propagation and amplification scales of pump light and fluorescence in the medium. It was shown that the minimum spectral width of fluorescent response of the pumped medium is limited by competition between the stimulated emission and radiation losses in microscopic fluorescence emitters associated with the speckles randomly modulating the pumping light field. Theoretical results were compared to the experimental data on the spectral properties of the fluorescent response of laser-pumped nanostructured "anatase nanoparticles-dye solutions" systems with various structural and optical properties.

At present, the combination of 2D materials of different types of conductivity in the form of van der Waals heterostructures is an effective approach to designing electronic devices with desired characteristics. In this paper, we design novel van der Waals heterostructures by combing buckled triangular borophene (tr-B) and graphene-like gallium nitride (GaN) monolayers, and tr-B and zinc oxide (ZnO) monolayers together. Using ab initio methods, we theoretically predict the structural, electronic, and electrically conductive properties of tr-B/GaN and tr-B/ZnO van der Waals heterostructures.
