Erythema ab igne (EAI) is a localized, hyperpigmented and reticulated dermatosis at sites of chronic heat exposure. Within longstanding skin lesions of EAI, hyperkeratotic lesions may emerge and can potentially transform into pre-malignant or malignant skin lesions. A 55-year-old woman presented for the evaluation of multiple hyperkeratotic lesions along with a reticular patterned hyperpigmentation on her right knee, an area that had repeated and prolonged exposure to a heat source over a period of several months.

Background: The secondary attack rate (SAR) of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) was estimated, and the risk factors for infection among members of households with a coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) index case were identified to inform preventive measures.

Methods: Between 3 August and 19 December 2020, a household transmission study was implemented based on a standardized World Health Organization protocol. Laboratory-confirmed cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection were recruited through the federal COVID-19 database.

Efforts to reduce air pollution in developing countries may require increased use of biomass fuels. Even biomass fuels are a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels there is limited quantitative information concerning heavy metal content in their ashes. Therefore, this study focuses on the determination of the heavy metal concentrations in wood pellet ash obtained from the combustion of 10 pellet brans from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Italy, the effects of adding the ashes to soils, and the assessment of health risk assessment.

Musculoskeletal research has been enriched in the past ten years with a great wealth of new discoveries arising from genome wide association studies (GWAS). In addition to the novel factors identified by GWAS, the advent of whole-genome and whole-exome sequencing efforts in family based studies has also identified new genes and pathways. However, the function and the mechanisms by which such genes influence clinical traits remain largely unknown.

Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists and Brain Vascular Function.

Heart Lung Circ

November 2021

Department of Pharmacology, Sarajevo Medical School, Sarajevo School of Science and Technology, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Prevention of cardiovascular events and regression of atherosclerotic changes are the primary aims of preventive cardiovascular medicine. Arterial thrombosis is caused by endothelial dysfunction, which disrupts vascular haemostasis. Glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists have been initially used as glucose lowering agents, but over time have been used for other indications due to their cardiorenal benefit, as well as their benefit in the regression of atherosclerosis process.

Heavy metals, due to their inability to degrade, pose a serious environmental and nutritional problem. The accumulation of essential and non-essential heavy metals in living organisms reduces normal growth and development, resulting in acute poisoning, disease and even death of organisms. Melatonin is a very important multifunctional molecule in protecting plants from oxidative stress due to its ability to directly neutralize reactive oxygen species (ROS).

Although epigenetic modifications have been intensely investigated over the last decade due to their role in crop adaptation to rapid climate change, it is unclear which epigenetic changes are heritable and therefore transmitted to their progeny. The identification of epigenetic marks that are transmitted to the next generations is of primary importance for their use in breeding and for the development of new cultivars with a broad-spectrum of tolerance/resistance to abiotic and biotic stresses. In this review, we discuss general aspects of plant responses to environmental stresses and provide an overview of recent findings on the role of transgenerational epigenetic modifications in crops.

Background: Premature ovarian failure (POF) can be found in 1% of women at the age of 35-40, mostly due to unknown causes. PI3K-Akt signaling is associated with both ovarian function and growth of primordial follicles. In this study, we examined the effects of autologous ovarian activation with stem cells and autologous growth factors on reproductive and endocrine function in patients with ovarian impairment.

Background: Oral Function, Orofacial Pain, Orofacial Appearance, and Psychosocial Impact are the four oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) dimensions (4D) or areas in which oral disorders impact pediatric patients. Using their dentists' assessment, the study aimed to evaluate whether pediatric dental patients' oral health concerns fit into the 4D of the Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) construct.

Methods: Dentists who treat children from 32 countries and all WHO regions were selected from a web-based survey of 1580 international dentists.

  • Understanding what makes alien species successful can help predict future invasions.
  • Researchers identified three key dimensions of invasiveness: local abundance, geographic range size, and habitat breadth, analyzing data from over one million vegetation plots across Europe.
  • The study found that earlier introductions and certain traits, especially from acquisitive growth strategists, contributed to higher success rates in invasiveness, while also highlighting unique patterns in specific habitats.

While the COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread globally, with relistic hope that will be solved with adequate vacination, more and more evidences are collected about the presence of psychi-atric and neurological manifestations and symptoms associated with this diseas. Neurological manifestations, are part of the COVID-19 clinical picture, but questions remain regarding the frequency and severity of centra nervous system symptoms, the mechanism of action underlying neurological symptoms, and the relationship of symptoms with the course and severity of COVID-19. The review of the so far published papers shows that although more and more papers are reporting neuro-logical and psyhiatric manifestations associated with COVID-19, many items remain unclear.

May 2021

Specialist of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Health Center, Zadar, Croatia.

One of the most controversial topics in modern bioethics, science, and philosophy is the beginning of individual human life. In the seemingly endless debate, strongly stimulated by recent technologic advances in human reproduction, a synthesis between scientific data and hypothesis, philosophical thought, and issues of humanities has become a necessity to deal with ethical, juridical, and social problems. Furthermore, in this field there is a temptation to ask science to choose between opinions and beliefs, which neutralize one another.

The application of machine learning (ML) techniques could facilitate the identification of predictive biomarkers of somatostatin analog (SSA) efficacy in patients with neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). We collected data from 74 patients with a pancreatic or gastrointestinal NET who received SSA as first-line therapy. We developed three classification models to predict whether the patient would experience a progressive disease (PD) after 12 or 18 months based on clinic-pathological factors at the baseline.
