Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a growing global healthcare burden. Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are more likely to acquire MetS than the general population. Recent research suggests that the interaction of adipose tissue products, such as adiponectin resistin and uric acid, is essential in MetS onset.

  • A team of over 180 researchers from more than 40 countries is addressing the issues related to "phantom agents," which are proposed pathogenic agents that are listed without concrete evidence of their existence.
  • These phantom agents, identified only through symptoms and lacking proper isolates or genetic data, create obstacles for trade and plant certification, making effective detection and risk assessment difficult.
  • The researchers recommend removing these agents from regulatory lists and updating standards in line with modern diagnostic methods to facilitate germplasm exchange and support global agriculture.

Hemorrhagic stroke and atherogenic markers - is there any relation?

J Family Med Prim Care

November 2024

Department of Anaesthesiology, Institute of Clinical Sciences, Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, Sahlgrenska Universitetssjukhuset, Gothenburg, Sweden.

Background: The triglyceride/high-density lipoprotein (TG/HDL) ratio emerges as a promising marker for cardiovascular risk. However, the relationship between overall serum lipid levels and hemorrhagic stroke (HS) remains uncertain. Therefore, our study aims to explore the association between this novel index and mortality in HS patients.

Background: Evaluated values of body mass index (BMI), waist circumeference (WC) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) increase the risk of stroke, but the extent to which this is mediated by hypertension, diabetes, lipid status, smoking and alcohol consumption is not fully understood.

Objective: The aim of this research is to examine the influence of modifying and non-modifying factors as well as obesity defined through BMI, WC and WHR on the occurrence of stroke.

Methods: A total of 440 subjects were included in the cohort divided in to two groups.

Balancing increasing demand for wood products while also maintaining forest biodiversity is a paramount challenge. Europe's Biodiversity and Forest Strategies for 2030 attempt to address this challenge. Together, they call for strict protection of 10% of land area, including all primary and old growth forests, increasing use of ecological forestry, and less reliance on monocultural plantations.

Evidence of the association between the gut microbiome and cardiovascular diseases has accumulated. An imbalance or dysbiosis of this system has been shown to play a role in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular events, including aortic diseases. We aimed to elucidate the findings of the gut microbial taxonomy associated with aortic diseases and their subtypes.

Epigenetics of cardiomyopathies: the next frontier.

Heart Fail Rev

January 2025

Thoraxcenter, Department of Cardiology, Cardiovascular Institute. Erasmus MC - University Medical Center Rotterdam, Office RG-431Dr. Molewaterplein 40, 3015 GD, Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

Cardiomyopathies (CMP) are a diverse group of myocardial diseases that cause structural, functional, and pathological changes to the heart. Alterations at the molecular level associated with the clinical phenotype and progression of CMPs cannot be solely explained by the genetic mutations, even in inherited cardiomyopathies. Epigenetics and environmental factors are likely to significantly modify the clinical manifestations of CMPs, resulting in variable clinical expression and different age-related penetrance.

Many scientific breakthroughs have depended on animal research, yet the ethical concerns surrounding the use of animals in experimentation have long prompted discussions about humane treatment and responsible scientific practice. First articulated by Russell and Burch, the 3Rs Principles of Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement have gained widespread recognition as basic guidelines for animal research. Over time, the 3Rs have transcended the research community, influencing policy decisions, animal welfare advocacy and public perception of animal experimentation.

Aim: During the pandemic of severe acute respiratory syndrome corona-virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), many countries reported a significant decrease in the prevalence of influenza virus cases. The study aimed to characterize the flu seasons from 2018 to 2023 in Sarajevo Canton, Bosnia and Herzegovina (B&H), and to assess the possible impact of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic on the influenza A and B virus circulation.

Methods: The CDC Human Influenza Virus Real-Time RT-PCR Diagnostic Panels were used for the detection of influenza virus A and B, and subtyping of influenza virus A (H1pdm09 virus and H3).

Introduction: Neovascular glaucoma (NVG) is a severe type characterized by forming new blood vessels on the iris and the anterior chamber angle, often resulting from ischemic retinal diseases. Pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) is a standard surgical procedure for treating various retinal and vitreous conditions. Understanding the risk factors associated with NVG development following PPV is crucial for improving patient outcomes.

Chronic coronary syndrome (CCS) is a long-term manifestation of coronary artery disease, marked by stable but recurring chest pain and myocardial ischemia due to the gradual buildup of atherosclerotic plaques in the coronary arteries. It is a metabolic disorder of coronary arteries characterized by oxidative stress, endothelial dysfunction, inflammation, and hyperlipidemia. The imbalance in oxidative-antioxidative status contributes to stable ischemic heart disease.

The Effects of Brodalumab on the Fungal Microbiome in Patients with Psoriasis.

Int J Mol Sci

September 2024

Department of Dermatology and Venereology, Institute of Clinical Sciences, Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, 413 45 Gothenburg, Sweden.

Article Synopsis
  • The gut microbiota is crucial for immune function, and its imbalance (dysbiosis) is associated with systemic inflammation, affecting conditions like psoriasis and depression.
  • This study investigates how switching psoriasis patients from TNF-α inhibitors to brodalumab affects their gut fungal microbiota, using fecal samples and advanced sequencing techniques.
  • Results indicate that while the dominant fungal group was Ascomycota, switching treatments did not significantly change fungal composition, despite clinical improvements, suggesting brodalumab may not impact fungal communities in psoriasis patients.

A theoretical perspective on grandiose narcissism suggests four forms of it (sanctity, admiration, heroism, rivalry) and states that these forms conduce to different ways of thinking and acting. Guided by this perspective, we examined in a multinational and multicultural study (61 countries; N = 15,039) how narcissism forms are linked to cognitions and behaviors prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic. As expected, differences in cognitions and behaviors across narcissism forms emerged.
