Presacral extramedullary hematopoiesis: a diagnostic confusion concerning a rare presentation.

Objective: To report a rare case of extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH) with an asymptomatic intrapelvic mass in a patient with thalassemia major.

Clinical Presentation: The patient presented with a pelvic mass discovered by ultrasonography before undertaking laparoscopic cholecystectomy for gallstones. Technetium-99m MDP bone scan failed to differentiate EMH from malignancy.

Abdominal cocoon. An unusual cause of intestinal obstruction.

We report a case of abdominal cocoon in a young male patient, presenting with acute intestinal obstruction and abdominal mass. This is a rare acquired condition of the peritoneum in which the small bowel is encased either partially or totally by a dense fibrous membrane. Operative findings, perioperative imaging and treatment guidelines are discussed.

An open, randomized, two-way crossover study was carried out in 28 healthy volunteers at Gulf Pharmaceutical Industries (Julphar), as a joint venture with Saqr Hospital, Ras Al-Khaimah, UAE. The two commercial brands used were Sarf (Julphar, UAE) as test and Ciprobay (Bayer AG, Germany) as reference product. The drug was administered to each subject with 240 mL of water after an overnight fasting in two treatment days separated by a one-week washout period.

The goal of the present work was to investigate possible risk factors for the poor response of some cases of chronic sinusitis to endoscopic sinus surgery in spite of the precision of the surgical technique. Eleven adult patients who were scheduled for revision endoscopic sinus surgery underwent a complete allergy workup. At the time of surgery, a tiny biopsy was taken from the maxillary sinus mucosa close to the middle turbinate.

Endoscopic carbon dioxide laser turbinoplasty.

In the present work we describe the management of hypertrophied inferior turbinates using CO(2) laser in the UniPulse mode. The laser beam is delivered through the nasal probe delivery system, and the procedure is performed using the 0 degrees endoscope. The UniPulse mode allowed fine-tuned, char-free tissue ablation, and the nasal probes allowed delivery of laser energy to the posterior parts of the inferior turbinates.

Objective: To determine the efficacy of a self-expanding self-retaining temporary urethral stent (Urocoil) in patients with recurrent urethral strictures at different levels in the urethra.

Patients And Methods: Urocoil stents were placed in 18 patients (mean age 42 years, range 28-60) with recurrent urethral strictures. The stents were left for a mean of 8 months (range 6-14) and patients followed for a mean of 9 months (range 6-18) after removal of the stent, being assessed by urine culture, urethrography, flexible cystoscopy and urinary flow rate.
