Bronchial stump reinforcement is sometimes required for patients who have a high risk of developing a bronchial fistula. A lobectomy by video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) is widely used for the treatment of both stage I primary lung cancer and metastatic central lung cancer, but there has been no report on reinforcement of a bronchial stump in a VATS lobectomy. We report an aged patient with stage I primary lung cancer concomitant to diabetes mellitus who was successfully treated by VATS lobectomy with reinforcement of the bronchial stump using a pericardial fat pedicle flap.

We studied the clinical efficacy of oral treatment with ciprofloxacin (CPFX) alone and combined with clarithromycin (CAM) in patients with complicated urinary tract infection with or without an indwelling catheter. Patients were randomly allocated to 600 mg CPFX (CPFX group) or to 600 mg CPFX plus 600 mg CAM (combination group) for 14 days. Evaluation was done on day 14 according to the criteria advocated by the Japanese Urinary Tract Infection Committee.

To clarify whether plasma somatostatin affects thyrotropin secretion in critical illness, plasma somatostatin and thyrotropin responses to thyrotropin-releasing hormone were studied in forty-three critically ill patients. High somatostatin levels were associated with blunted thyrotropin secretion in critically ill patients. There was an inverse correlation between plasma somatostatin levels and the maximum increment of thyrotropin after stimulation by thyrotropin-releasing hormone.

Some viruses seem to be capable of suppressing interferon (IFN)-induced 2',5'-oligoadenylate synthetase (2-5AS) induction. Cells infected with human T-lymphotropic virus type-I (HTLV-I) show different natures for the constitutive production of IFN-gamma or sensitivity to IFN. Poor induction of 2-5AS was found in IFN-gamma producer cells carrying HTLV-I (MT-1, MT-2 and SMT-1).
