Background: Alopecia areata (AA) spares the stem cell compartment and attacks only the base of the hair follicle, which is surrounded by infiltrating lymphocytes. AA is associated with polymorphisms in immune-related genes and with decreased function of CD4+CD25+ T regulatory (Treg) cells. Treg function is modulated by the costimulatory molecules, like inducible costimulator (ICOS) that are crucial in orienting T cell differentiation and function so that they strongly impact on the immunologic decision between tolerance or autoimmunity development.

Over the last 2 years, different cases of immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) in patients affected by SARS-CoV2 have been reported. The management of SARS-CoV2 in subjects with simultaneous or previous ITP can be challenging because of the great involvement of the haemostatic system in this viral infection. In this report, we describe the management and outcome of patients with newly diagnosed (ND), chronic and previous ITP, infected by COVID-19, referred to the Haematology Institute of University Hospital Policlinico Umberto I in Rome.

Periodic repetition of right heart catheterization (RHC) in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) can be challenging. We evaluated the correlation between RHC and cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) aiming at CPET use as a potential noninvasive tool for hemodynamic burden evaluation. One hundred and forty-four retrospective PAH patients who had performed CPET and RHC within 2 months were enrolled.

Methods: We applied tree-based machine learning algorithms (MLs) to discriminate LOAD (>700 individuals) and age-matched unaffected subjects in UK Biobank with single nucleotide variants (SNVs) from Alzheimer's disease (AD) studies, obtaining specific genomic profiles with the prioritized SNVs.
Purpose: To analyze the characteristics of the ovarian endometrioma (OE) across the life span of a woman. In the past, the OE has traditionally been viewed as a single, monolithic disease. Today, there are emerging data indicating that OE phenotypes differ according to the age of the woman.

We evaluated the distribution of a polygenic risk score, consisting of 12 low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C)-raising variants (polygenic LDL-C risk score), in subjects with a clinical diagnosis of FH. Methods and Results Within the Lipid Transport Disorders Italian Genetic Network (LIPIGEN) study, 875 patients who were FH-mutation positive (women, 54.

Hemangiomas are developmental vascular abnormalities that are common in the head and neck (60%), rare in the oral cavity, and uncommon in the tongue. A patient performed a multi-parametric MRI, which characterized the lesion of his tongue, providing relevant information for diagnostic, therapeutic orientation, and realization of slight aggressive surgery with consequent excellent recovery.

Aim: Trypanorhyncha cestodes comprise a wide range of heteroxenous parasites infecting elasmobranchs as definitive hosts. Limited data exist on the larval infection of these cestodes and the role of intermediate and paratenic hosts in the life cycle of these parasites. We investigated the factors that determine the occurrence and the level of infection of plerocerci in the skeletal muscles of various benthonic sharks and analyzed the parasites through an integrative taxonomic approach.

Background: Prior to this study, 141 species of Tephritidae were known to occur in Italy.
New Information: Italian records of nine species of the family Tephritidae (Diptera) are provided. Five species, (Loew, 1840), Merz, 1992, (Loew, 1856), (Meigen, 1826) and Jermy, 1961 are recorded from Italy for the first time, whereas four species, (Frauenfeld, 1857), (Meigen, 1826), Merz, 1992 and Merz, 1992, previously recorded in the Fauna Europaea database without reference to collection material, are confirmed and supplemented with host plant data and other collection data.
Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) research has seen a significant growth in international collaboration over the last three decades. However, researchers face a challenge in identifying large and diverse samples capable of powering longitudinal studies and clinical trials. The DLB research community has begun to focus efforts on supporting the development and harmonization of consortia, while also continuing to forge networks within which data and findings can be shared.

Background Glutathione is a water-soluble tripeptide with a potent oxidant scavenging activity. We hypothesized that glutathione administration immediately before and after primary angioplasty (primary percutaneous coronary intervention) could be effective in modulating immune cell activation, thereby preventing infarct expansion. Methods and Results One hundred consecutive patients with ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction, scheduled to undergo primary percutaneous coronary intervention were randomly assigned before the intervention to receive an infusion of glutathione (2500 mg/25 mL over 10 minutes), followed by drug administration at the same doses at 24, 48, and 72 hours elapsing time or placebo.

Upper gastrointestinal (GI) side effects are a main reason for discontinuing bisphosphonate treatment, an important therapeutic option for osteoporosis patients. Consequently, the development of novel formulations with improved tolerability is warranted. In this multicenter prospective, observational, postauthorization safety study conducted in Italy and Spain, postmenopausal women (PMW) with osteoporosis (naïve to bisphosphonates) were treated weekly with a buffered soluble alendronate 70 mg effervescent (ALN-EFF) tablet (Binosto®) and followed for 12 ± 3 months.

Background: The collections of the Natural History Museum of Maputo have a crucial role in the safeguarding of Mozambique's biodiversity, representing an important repository of data and materials regarding the natural heritage of the country. In this paper, a dataset is described, based on the Museum's Entomological Collection recording 409 species belonging to seven orders and 48 families. Each specimen's available data, such as geographical coordinates and taxonomic information, have been digitised to build the dataset.

Technical design features for improving the way a passive elastic filament produces propulsive thrust can be understood by analyzing the deformation of sperm-templated microrobots with segmented magnetization. Magnetic nanoparticles are electrostatically self-assembled on bovine sperm cells with nonuniform surface charge, producing different categories of sperm-templated microrobots. Depending on the amount and location of the nanoparticles on each cellular segment, magnetoelastic and viscous forces determine the wave pattern of each category during flagellar motion.

We evaluated the relationships between monogenic FH and polygenic hypercholesterolemia in influencing the long-term response to therapy and the risk of atherosclerosis. Methods and Results A cohort of 370 patients with clinically diagnosed FH were screened for monogenic mutations and a low-density lipoprotein-rising genetic risk score >0.

The paper addresses the issues of admissibility of human embryo research and the legal protection to be recognized, in light of the growing importance that scientific research has been gaining in the clinical and biomedical fields of embryonic stem cells for therapeutic purposes. As for human embryo experimentation, particularly on cryopreserved supernumerary embryos, European legislation varies, since the European Court has granted member States a wide margin of appreciation. Some countries, including Italy, have strict legislation protecting embryos from the fertilisation stage, whereas others have taken permissive approaches, allowing experimentation until 14 days after fertilisation.
