Polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs), formed via the self-assembly of oppositely charged polysaccharides, are highly valued for their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and hydrophilicity, offering significant potential for biotechnological applications. However, the complex nature and lack of insight at a molecular level into polyelectrolytes conformation and aggregation often hinders the possibility of achieving an optimal control of PEC systems, limiting their practical applications. To address this problem, an in-depth investigation of PECs microscopic structural organization is required.

Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most common neurodegenerative disorder world-wide, presents sex-specific differences in its manifestation and progression, necessitating personalized diagnostic approaches. Current procedures are often costly and invasive, lacking consideration of sex-based differences. This study introduces an explainable machine learning (ML) system to predict and differentiate the progression of AD based on sex, using non-invasive, easily collectible predictors such as neuropsychological test scores and sociodemographic data, enabling its application in every day clinical settings.

Adversities associated with isolation during adolescence, including the lack of appropriate emotional and social experiences, can jeopardize the individual development leading to the onset of mental illnesses such as major depressive disorder. Girls have higher rates of depression compared to boys; however, the relative contribution of biological and cultural factors to such a gender-dependent difference remains unclear. To identify the role of biological factors in this distinct susceptibility, we exposed adolescent C57BL/6 male and female mice (n = 12-14) to social isolation and we evaluated their behavioral responses, investigating both emotional and cognitive competencies during adolescence.

Unlabelled: This study investigates the interaction of KEIF, the intrinsically disordered N-terminal region of the magnesium transporter MgtA, with lipid bilayers mimicking cell membranes. Combining experimental techniques such as neutron reflectometry (NR), quartz-crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D), synchrotron radiation circular dichroism (SRCD), and oriented circular dichroism (OCD), with molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we characterized KEIF's adsorption behavior.
Hypothesis: KEIF undergoes conformational changes upon interacting with lipid bilayers, potentially influencing MgtA's function within the plasma membrane.

This study investigates the impact of intense rainfall on chromium concentrations in five springs discharging from ultramafic rocks in the Northern Apennines (Italy), which are used for drinking water supply through integration into the local water network. Total chromium concentration increased significantly in response to heavy rain, exceeding the WHO drinking water guideline value (up to 80 μg/L) in one spring and the forthcoming 2036 EU target of 25 μg/L in all the springs. This increase could be attributed to a synergistic combination of factors: i) the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) by natural organic matter (NOM) in soil and transport as NOM-Cr(III) colloids and/or during the oxidation of magnetite to ferrihydrite in the aquifer; ii) the abundance of detrital ultramafic material in the study area, which may store Cr(III)-bearing colloids too; iii) a triggering effect of first intense rainfall after a 20 dry consecutive days period (wet-dry cycle).

The hippocampus is a heterogenous structure that exhibits functional segregation along its longitudinal axis. We recently showed that in male mice, microglia, the brain's resident immune cells, differ between the dorsal (DH) and ventral (VH) hippocampus, impacting long-term potentiation (LTP) mainly through the CX3CL1-CX3CR1 signaling. Here, we assessed the specific features of the hippocampal poles in female mice, demonstrating a similar LTP amplitude in VH and DH in both control and Cx3cr1 knock-out mice.

This study delves into the kinetic behavior and structural dynamics of HLADH, shedding light on complex mechanisms governing its catalytic activity and interactions with the cofactor. Notably, deviations from traditional Michaelis-Menten kinetics are observed, manifesting as a slowdown in catalytic rate under high NADH concentrations.

This article provides a review of published literature on the concentration levels of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in asbestos minerals like chrysotile, actinolite, amosite (asbestiform grunerite), anthophyllite, crocidolite (asbestiform riebeckite) and tremolite and their potential to release PTEs into groundwaters worldwide. A large number of PTEs, such as Fe, Cr, Ni, Mn, Co and Zn, may be hosted by asbestos minerals, and their release in the lung environment can cause different health problems as well as their intake via drinking water. The review highlights that amosite is the phase with the highest PTEs content, followed by crocidolite, actinolite, anthophyllite, tremolite and chrysotile.

Purpose: To assess the tear levels of a set of apoptotic, matrix-degrading and antioxidant biomarkers, including Metalloproteinase 9 (MMP9), High Mobility Group Box 1 (HMGB1) and Superoxide Dismutase 3-Extracellular (SOD3).
Methods: Sandwich-ELISA commercial kits were used to test the expression of the three tear biomarkers in the lacrimal fluid of eligible participants. Linear logistic regression analysis was performed todetermine whether the set of tear biomarkers could be associated with clinically manifest keratoconus.

In this study, we employ a comprehensive approach to model the concurrent effects of the COVID-19 epidemic and heatwaves on all-cause excess mortality. Our investigation uncovers distinct peaks in excess mortality, notably among individuals aged 80 years and older, revealing a strong positive correlation with excess temperatures (ET) during the summer of 2022 in Italy. Furthermore, we identify a notable role played by COVID-19 hospitalizations, exhibiting regional disparities, particularly during the winter months.
