The Keap1-Nrf2 pathway is an essential system that maintains redox homeostasis and modulates key metabolic processes, including metabolism of amino acids to promote the synthesis of antioxidant enzymes. Inhibitors of the protein-protein interaction (PPI) between Keap1 and Nrf2 have emerged as a promising strategy for developing novel classes of antioxidant agents that selectively activate this pathway without off-target effects. Carotenoids, a large family of lipophilic isoprenoids synthesized by all photosynthetic organisms, are well-known for their antioxidant activities.

Department of Management, University of Turin, Corso Unione Sovietica 218 bis, 10134, Torino, Italy; Finance and Financial Accounting Research Group, School of Accounting and Finance, University of Vaasa, Wolffintie 34, 65200, Vaasa, Finland. Electronic address:

This study investigates the efficiency of green bonds as a financial instrument for promoting renewable energy production, with a specific focus on their performance during the Covid-19 pandemic. Using a sample of 55 countries from 2014 to 2022 and employing the Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares (FMOLS) model to address non-stationarity and cointegration of variables, we find that green bond issuance positively impacts overall renewable energy generation. However, when examining specific sources of green energy, we observe that wind energy benefits the most from green bond financing, while estimates show only marginal significance for hydro energy and no significance for solar energy.

November 2024

Department of Biology, University of Pisa, CoNISMa, Via Derna 1, 56126, Pisa, Italy; Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn, Villa Comunale, 80121, Naples, Italy.

Marine bioconstructions and their ecological functions are increasingly threatened by compounded natural disturbances and direct and indirect impacts of anthropogenic activities. Through a manipulative experiment in the field, we assessed the response of intertidal biogenic patches built by the honeycomb worm, Sabellaria alveolata, to combined disturbances. Repeated battering events, simulating those associated with waves, were applied on intact or previously damaged bioconstructions, mimicking those impacted by harvesting of infaunal organisms.

Purpose: The abundance and distribution of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) as well as that of other components of the tumor microenvironment is of particular importance for predicting response to immunotherapy in lung cancer (LC). We describe here a pilot study employing artificial intelligence (AI) in the assessment of TILs and other cell populations, intending to reduce the inter- or intra-observer variability that commonly characterizes this evaluation.

Design: We developed a machine learning-based classifier to detect tumor, immune, and stromal cells on hematoxylin and eosin-stained sections, using the open-source framework .

Calibration-Based ALE Model Order Reduction for Hyperbolic Problems with Self-Similar Travelling Discontinuities.

J Sci Comput

October 2024

Department of Mathematics "Guido Castelnuovo", University of Rome La Sapienza, Piazzale Aldo Moro 5, Roma, 00185 Italy.

We propose a novel Model Order Reduction framework that is able to handle solutions of hyperbolic problems characterized by multiple travelling discontinuities. By means of an optimization based approach, we introduce suitable calibration maps that allow us to transform the original solution manifold into a lower dimensional one. The novelty of the methodology is represented by the fact that the optimization process does not require the knowledge of the discontinuities location.

Background: A Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Epidemiology Collaboration (EPI) formula not including a Black race coefficient has been recently developed and is now recommended in the US. The new (2021) equation was shown to yield higher estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) values than the old (2009) one in a non-Black general population sample, thus reclassifying a significant number of individuals to a better eGFR category. However, reclassified individuals were previously shown to have a lower risk of progression to end-stage kidney disease, but higher adjusted risks for all-cause death and morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular disease than those not reclassified.

Article Synopsis
  • Socioeconomic determinants of health (SDOH) are often overlooked in assessing risks for urological surgeries, which may lead to disparities in patient outcomes, particularly after minimally invasive radical prostatectomy (MIRP).
  • A study using data from over 100,000 patients revealed that about 6% reported SDOH, which were linked to a 24% increased risk of complications post-surgery, including higher rates of urinary tract infections and acute kidney injuries.
  • The findings highlight the need for healthcare systems to address SDOH to improve patient outcomes and reduce complications after procedures like MIRP.

Article Synopsis
  • In the TOPAZ-1 trial, patients with biliary tract cancers (BTC) who had recurrence within 6 months of surgery were excluded, which often happens in practice. This study looked into the effectiveness of cisplatin-gemcitabine-durvalumab (CGD) in patients who did experience early recurrence.
  • The study enrolled 178 BTC patients who had surgery and then underwent treatment with CGD after experiencing either early or late disease recurrence. Key goals were to measure overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS).
  • Results showed no significant differences in OS and PFS between early and late relapse groups, suggesting CGD is effective regardless of when the cancer
