Intracellular Pathogens Research Laboratory, Comparative Medicine Institute, College of Veterinary Medicine, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC 27606, USA.

More than one-hundred species that affect animals and humans have been described, eight of which have been associated with emerging and underdiagnosed zoonoses. Most diagnostic studies in humans have used serology or molecular assays based on the 18S rRNA gene. Because the 18S rRNA gene is highly conserved, obtaining an accurate diagnosis at the species level is difficult, particularly when the amplified DNA fragment is small.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers focused on detecting mercury (Hg) in water using a nanocomposite of carbon dots and LAPONITE as an optical sensor due to Hg's environmental and health risks.
  • The study used Stern-Volmer analysis at three temperatures to examine the sensor's performance, finding that it selectively detects Hg compared to other metals, with an effective range of 1-40 μM.
  • It revealed that static quenching is the main mechanism for Hg detection, likely due to interactions between the sensor's carboxylate groups and Hg, and some parts of the sensor are not fully accessible to the Hg ions.

Leishmaniasis is a neglected disease that remains with a limited number of drugs available for chemotherapy and has an increased drug resistance that affects treatment outcomes. Metal-based drugs such as cyclopalladated complex [Pd(dmba)(μ-N)] (CP2), a Leishmania topoisomerase IB inhibitor involved in calcium dysregulation and mitochondrial dysfunction of the parasite, had been an alternative to outline the appearance of chemoresistance. To identify new molecular targets and point out possible resistance mechanisms, a CP2-resistant Leishmania amazonensis (LaR) was selected by stepwise exposure to increasing drug pressure until a line capable of growth in 13.
