Pressure injury prevention in an intensive care unit: implementing the best practices.

Objective: to implement the best evidence in preventing pressure injuries in patients in the intensive care unit of a university hospital in the city of São Paulo/Brazil.

Method: a quasi-experimental study whose intervention was implementing evidence based on the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology, which includes auditing and feedback. Ten audit criteria were used, which were verified in patient records and training records of the teaching and quality service.

Effects of aromatherapy on the overload and fatigue of informal elderly caregivers: a pilot study.

Objective: To verify the effect of aromatherapy (inhaled or via the skin) with lavender, sweet orange and bergamot essential oils on caregivers' overload and fatigue.

Method: Pilot, quasi-experimental, randomized, non-blind and parallel study with two groups. The reduced Zarit Burden Interview and Revised Piper scales were used, comparing the effect of two routes of administration.

Objective: To describe the implementation and pioneering work of a vaccine pharmacovigilance committee in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, for the analysis of events supposedly attributable to vaccination or immunization (ESAVI) during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods: This is a retrospective, mixed-methods (qualitative and quantitative) case study focusing on the work carried out by the pharmacovigilance committee in the years 2021 and 2022. The minutes of committee meetings were used to describe how the committee operates.

Allogeneic Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation in Elderly Patients in a Latin American Country: Analysis of 11 Years of Data from the Brazilian Registry SBTMO/CIBMTR.

This study analyzed recent changes in the utilization of allogeneic HCT for treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML), myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), and myeloproliferative diseases (MPD) and the survival of HCT recipients ≥60 years of age in Brazil. This retrospective registry study included patients who received a first allogeneic HCT from any donor between 2012 and 2023. Of the 6657 patients, 444 (7%) were 60 years of age or older who received grafts from HLA-matched related (42%) or unrelated (20%) donors or HLA-haploidentical donors (32%).

Research trends in pediatric splenic trauma in Brazil: how much has changed in the last two decades?

Purpose: Research in high-income countries has extensively documented the non-operative management of spleen injuries in children, resulting in low splenectomy rates (5%). However, there is a lack of literature on this topic in low- and-middle-income countries (LMICs), including Brazil. This scoping review analyzed pediatric spleen trauma research trends in Brazil and the United States of America (USA).

Brazilian authorship gender trends on academic surgery: a bigdata analysis.

Purpose: To evaluate the gender distribution of first and last authors with Brazilian surgical affiliations in PubMed-indexed surgical journals.

Methods: Data from eligible surgical journals were retrieved using Scimago Journal & Country Rank 2021 and manually reviewed. Manuscripts published from 2018 to 2022 were included if at least one author was affiliated with a Brazilian institution and a surgical specialty.

Introduction: Hip dips, often referred to as the pronounced trochanteric depression, can be caused by athletic muscular definition or the ageing process. This depression might impact the desirable contour of the buttocks in some female patients.

Background: Postextubation respiratory failure (PRF) frequently complicates weaning from mechanical ventilation and may increase morbidity/mortality. Noninvasive ventilation (NIV) alternating with high-flow nasal oxygen (HFNO) may prevent PRF.

Methods: Ventilated patients without chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and at high-risk of PRF defined as a lung ultrasound score (LUS) ≥ 14 assessed during the spontaneous breathing trial, were included in a French-Chinese randomised controlled trial.

Efficacy of Ivermectin, Chloroquine/Hydroxychloroquine, and Azithromycin in Managing COVID-19: A Systematic Review of Phase III Clinical Trials.

During the coronavirus disease (COVID)-19 pandemic several drugs were used to manage the patients mainly those with a severe phenotype. Potential drugs were used off-label and major concerns arose from their applicability to managing the health crisis highlighting the importance of clinical trials. In this context, we described the mechanisms of the three repurposed drugs [Ivermectin-antiparasitic drug, Chloroquine/Hydroxychloroquine-antimalarial drugs, and Azithromycin-antimicrobial drug]; and, based on this description, the study evaluated the clinical efficacy of those drugs published in clinical trials.

External validation and calibration of the HoLISTIC Consortium's advanced-stage Hodgkin lymphoma international prognostic index (A-HIPI) in the Brazilian Hodgkin lymphoma registry.

The Hodgkin lymphoma International Study for Individual Care (HoLISTIC) Consortium's A-HIPI model, developed in 2022 for advanced-stage classical Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL), predicts survival within 5 years amongst newly diagnosed patients. This study validates its performance in the Brazilian Hodgkin lymphoma registry. By 2022, the Brazilian HL registry included 1357 cHL patients, with a median 5-year follow-up.

Predictors of first hospitalization due to disease activity and infections in systemic lupus erythematosus patients.

Objectives: To identify the predictive factors of first hospitalization and associated variables to the main causes of hospitalizations in lupus patients from a Latin American cohort.

Methods: The first hospitalization after entry into the cohort during these patients' follow-up due to either lupus disease activity and/or infection was examined. Clinical and therapeutic variables were those occurring prior to the first hospitalization.

Whey Protein Supplementation in Older Adults With Type 2 Diabetes Undergoing a Resistance Training Program: A Double-Blind Randomized Controlled Trial.

Background/objective: This study aims to analyze the effect of whey protein (WP) supplementation on glycemic control, muscle strength, quality of life, and body composition in older adults with non-insulin-dependent diabetes undergoing a resistance training program.

Methods: A double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized study was carried out with older adults with Type 2 diabetes. Body composition, food intake, muscle strength, glycemic profile, markers of renal function, cardiopulmonary capacity, and quality of life were evaluated.

Effect of post-storage filters vs. pre-storage filters for leukoreduction of blood components on clinical outcomes: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background: Leukoreduction has been used to limit the risk of adverse events. The most commonly used methodology is filtration (pre- or post-storage). However, whether pre-storage filtration is better than post-storage filtration needs to be clearly defined, particularly for countries that still use post-storage filtration.

Assessing the risks for stillbirth in São Paulo, Brazil: protocol for a multidisciplinary case-control study - FetRisks.

Stillbirth is a fundamental component of childhood mortality, but its causes are still insufficiently understood. This study aims to explore stillbirth risk factors by using a multidisciplinary approach to stimulate public policies and protocols to prevent stillbirth, improve maternal care and support bereaved families. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: In this case-control study with stillbirths and live births in 14 public hospitals in São Paulo, mothers are interviewed at hospitals after delivery, and hospital records and prenatal care registries are reviewed.

A new device to treat ping-pong skull fractures: The hammer puller technique. A comparative analysis using a realistic simulation model.

Background: This study aims to describe a new surgical technique for the treatment of ping-pong skull fractures and to evaluate its efficacy in a realistic simulation model compared to the dissector elevation technique.

Methods: A total of 64 fractures were obtained using 16 model units, each with four fractures (two frontal and two parietal). The hammer puller technique was applied for left-sided fractures and the dissector technique for right-sided fractures.

Endoscopic transoral outlet reduction induces enterohormonal changes in patients with weight regain after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.

Transoral outlet reduction (TORe) has long been employed in treating weight regain after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. However, its impact on gut hormones and their relationship with weight loss remains unknown. This was a substudy of a previous randomized clinical trial.
