Anti-epileptogenic effect of FC99 and resveratrol.

Front Neurosci

August 2023

Felsenstein Medical Research Center, Beilinson Hospital, Petach Tikva, Israel.

Toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3), plays an important role in the development of epilepsy after brain insults. Previously, TLR3 deficiency in a pilocarpine model of temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) was shown to reduce mortality, spontaneous recurrent seizures (SRS) and neuroinflammation. We hypothesized that pharmacological inhibition of TLR3 would reduce epileptogenesis following status epilepticus.

Improvement in Endothelial Function in Men Taking Phosphodiesterase Type 5 Inhibitors for Erectile Dysfunction.

Am J Med

October 2023

Department of Medicine, Sanz Medical Center-Laniado Hospital, Adelson School of Medicine, Ariel University, Netanya, Israel. Electronic address:

Background: The purpose of this research was to explore the mechanistic protective cardiovascular effects of phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors (PDE5-Is) in males with erectile dysfunction. Erectile dysfunction and endothelial dysfunction both precede clinical atherosclerosis. Studies have shown that treatment for erectile dysfunction with PDE5-Is decreased death, heart failure, myocardial infarction, and revascularization in males with erectile dysfunction who had previous myocardial infarction, and cardiovascular events.

June 2023

Department of Pediatrics, Sanz Medical Center-Laniado Hospital, Netanya, Israel, Department of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology, Sanz Medical Center-Laniado Hospital, Netanya, Israel, Adelson School of Medicine, Ariel University, Ariel, Israel.

Background: Factor VII (FVII) deficiency is characterized by normal activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) and prolonged prothrombin time (PT) values. It is diagnosed by determining protein level and coagulation activity (FVII:C). FVII:C measurements are expensive and time consuming.

The Effect of Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy on Prognosis of Patients at Risk of Malnutrition.

Isr Med Assoc J

March 2023

Department of Surgery A, Wolfson Medical Center, Holon, Israel, Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv, Israel.

Background: Despite its wide use, evidence is inconclusive regarding the effect of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) in patients with chronic diseases and dementia among hospitalized patients with malnutrition.

Objectives: To examine the effect of PEG insertion on prognosis after the procedure.

Methods: This retrospective analysis of medical records included all adult patients who underwent PEG insertion between 1 January 2009 and 31 December 2013 during their hospitalization.

Division of Anesthesia, Intensive Care, and Pain Management, Tel-Aviv Medical Center, Tel-Aviv University, 6423906, Tel-Aviv, Israel.

Background: Most patients who are admitted non-intubated to surgery are extubated at surgery conclusion. Yet, 1-2% require unplanned postoperative ventilatory support. The outcome of these patients has not been thoroughly evaluated to date and is the focus of the present study.

Background: It is important to predict acute cholecystitis (AC) before a laparoscopic cholecystectomy because inflammation of the gallbladder predicts the need for open conversion and subsequent morbidity after a laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Objectives: To create an index based on clinical, laboratory, and ultrasound criteria on admission that will predict AC on pathological examination in patients presenting acutely.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed consecutive cases of emergency laparoscopic cholecystectomies conducted by three experienced surgeons between 1 October 2014 and 31 January 2018.

Herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE) is a very severe infection of the central nervous system (CNS) caused mainly by herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and occasionally by herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). After relapse or drug-resistant to chemotherapy, whole-brain radiation therapy (WBRT) is a mainstay of treatment in patients with both identifiable brain metastases and CNS lymphoma. Although HSV-1 encephalitis predominantly affects immunocompetent host, HSV encephalitis may be more common in immune-suppressed patients than is currently recognized.

Little evidence exists addressing the clinical value of adding gentamicin to ampicillin for invasive listeriosis. A multicenter retrospective observational study of nonpregnant adult patients with invasive listeriosis (primary bacteremia, central nervous system (CNS) disease, and others) in 11 hospitals in Israel between the years 2008 and 2014 was conducted. We evaluated the effect of penicillin-based monotherapy compared with early combination therapy with gentamicin, defined as treatment started within 48 h of culture results and continued for a minimum of 7 days.

Evaluation of early response during induction therapy for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is used for prognostication and re-induction strategy, yet the optimal evaluation time point is unknown. Clearance of bone marrow (BM) blasts by day 14 of therapy does not ensure remission; thus, some patients requiring re-induction are neglected. This study aimed to examine the role of earlier BM evaluation during induction for predicting remission and overall survival.

Introduction: Azacitidine (AZA) dose reduction is a common practice in cytopenic patients. However, a correlation between AZA dose and infection complications has never been studied.

Patients And Methods: Higher-risk patients with myelodysplastic syndrome or acute myeloid leukemia treated with AZA in 18 Israeli hospitals between the years 2008 and 2011 were included in a former national survey.

A successful potency assay for a cell therapy product (CTP) used in the treatment of ischemic conditions should quantitatively measure relevant biological properties that predict therapeutic activity. This is especially challenging because of numerous degrees of complexity stemming from factors that include a multifactorial complex mechanism of action, cell source, inherent cell characteristics, culture method, administration mode and the in vivo conditions to which the cells are exposed. The expected biological function of a CTP encompasses complex interactions that range from a biochemical, metabolic or immunological activity to structural replacement of damaged tissue or organ.

We present a pilot study of individuals (liquidators) who were engaged in clean-up operations after the disaster at the nuclear power plant at Chernobyl in Ukraine. In the 10 years since the disaster, adverse health effects among exposed individuals have not been clearly defined. There is widespread fear of damage to the reproductive system, with implications for fertility problems and adverse effects on offspring.
