This is a case report of a 60-year-old male patient with essential thrombocythemia (ET) that progressed to acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in approximately 9 years. His platelet count decreased approximately 8 years after ET treatment with hydroxyurea (HU) and aspirin. The dose of HU was reduced because of suspected myelosuppression due to HU; however, myelosuppression did not improve.

Objective: A total of 183 patients admitted to five hospitals for proximal femoral fractures and psychiatric disorders were examined to determine whether their physical function could be improved by rehabilitation and to identify factors that affected home discharge.
Methods: We conducted surveys to collect data regarding patients' age, sex, type of mental illness, location at time of injury, complications, Charlson Comorbidity Index, Global Assessment of Functioning scale scores, surgical technique, time from surgery to the start of rehabilitation at the target hospital, rehabilitation duration, results of cognitive function tests (e.g.

Background: There have been few investigations into the effects of environmental factors on the outcome of end-stage renal disease.
Methods: We investigated factors influencing the survival of dialysis patients in each prefecture of Japan by analyzing data from the Japan Statistics Bureau and Japanese Society for Dialysis Therapy using univariate and multivariate regression analysis.
Results: Univariate analysis showed that the number of dialysis specialists (p = 0.

There are regional differences in the incidence of new dialysis in Japan. We investigated nutritional factors that might influence the incidence of new dialysis due to diabetes mellitus(DM)in each prefecture. We analyzed the data reported for 47 prefectures in the National Nutrition Survey 1995-1999 (n = 38,003), and the Japanese Society for Dialysis Therapy 2005-2007 (n = 45,033).

We evaluated PCT's clinical efficacy in assessing bacterial infection severity, measuring PCT and systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) markers in 180 subjects with suspected infection. PCT titer was higher with increasing infection severity.

Few studies of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) investigate genetic and environmental effects simultaneously in one racial/ethnic group. United States Renal Data System data show racial differences in primary causes of ESRD, survival rates, and causes of death. Comparing these with Japanese Society for Dialysis Therapy data, survival rates appear better for Japanese than for US patients.

A combination of S-1, a newly developed oral 5-fluorouracil derivative, and cisplatin is reported to show anti-tumour activity against advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Because S-1 shows synergistic effects with radiation, we conducted a phase I study to evaluate the maximum tolerated doses (MTDs), recommended doses (RDs), and dose-limiting toxicities (DLTs) of cisplatin and S-1 when combined with concurrent thoracic radiation (total dose of 60 Gy with 2 Gy per daily fraction) in patients with locally advanced NSCLC. Chemotherapy consisted of two 4-week cycles of cisplatin administered on days 1 and 8, and S-1 administered on days 1-14.

The purposes of this study were to examine the usefulness of the biopsy of the sentinel lymph nodes (SNs) for the accurate and effective detection of lymph node micrometastasis in early lung cancer and to clarify the spread of lymph node micrometastasis. One hundred and thirty-three c-stage IA non-small cell lung cancer patients in whom SNs could be identified by radioisotope (RI) method were enrolled. All dissected lymph nodes were stained with cytokeratin AE1/AE3 for the examination of micrometastasis.

Background: Airway immunopathogenesis is unclear in patients with profound multiple disabilities (PMD) who undergo tracheostomy.
Methods: The levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta), IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, and IL-12p70 cytokines were determined in sputum of 28 patients with PMD who underwent tracheostomy and in 14 healthy subjects, using a cytometric bead array.
Results: The concentrations of IL-1beta, IL-6 and IL-8 in the patients were significantly higher than those in controls (p < 0.

SET domain genes have been identified in numbers of bacterial genomes based on similarity to SET domains of eukaryotic histone methyltransferases. Herein, a Chlamydophila pneumoniae SET domain gene was clarified to be coincidently expressed with hctA and hctB genes encoding chlamydial histone H1-like proteins, Hc1 and Hc2, respectively. The SET domain protein (cpnSET) is localized in chlamydial cells and interacts with Hc1 and Hc2 through the C-terminal SET domain.
