Intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM) is needed for evaluating and demonstrating the integrity of the central and peripheral nervous system during surgical manoeuvres that take place in proximity to eloquent motor and somatosensory nervous structures. The integrity of the monitored motor pathways is not always followed by consistent clinical normality, particularly in the first hours/days following surgery, when surgical resection involves brain structures such as the supplementary motor areas (SMA). We report the case of a patient who underwent surgical excision of a right frontal glioblastoma with normal preoperative, intraoperative (IONM), and postoperative central motor conduction, but with persistent postoperative hemiplegia (> 6 months).

September 2023

Department of Medicine and Surgery, Universitat de Lleida, Spain; Department of Psychiatry, Santa Maria University Hospital Lleida, Lleida, Spain; Institut de Recerca Biomèdica de Lleida (IRBLleida), Spain. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • C-reactive protein (CRP) and various inflammatory ratios (NLR, PLR, MLR, BLR) were studied to understand immune dysregulation in 698 acute schizophrenia (SCZ) inpatients.
  • CRP showed significant positive correlations with NLR, PLR, and MLR, indicating that higher levels of these ratios are associated with higher CRP levels, while no association was found with BLR.
  • The study found that inflammatory ratios could serve as complementary markers for CRP, especially emphasizing the strong relationship between NLR and CRP in multiepisode SCZ patients, with no notable differences based on sex.

Article Synopsis
  • Early diagnosis of cardiac transthyretin amyloidosis, particularly in individuals with the V30M mutation, is essential, as DPD scintigraphy may not be entirely accurate for this subgroup.
  • A study involving 288 V30M mutation carriers revealed that 14.2% had ATTR cardiomyopathy, with a significantly higher mortality rate observed in those with cardiomyopathy or DPD uptake during a 33.6-month follow-up period.
  • The combination of septal thickness and DPD uptake provides better risk stratification, indicating that patients without both conditions have the best prognosis, while those with either or both face much higher mortality rates.

The value of multiparametric prediction scores in heart failure varies with the type of follow-up after discharge: a comparative analysis.

ESC Heart Fail

August 2023

Cardiology Department, Santa Maria University Hospital, CHULN, Cardiovascular Centre (CCUL), Lisbon School of Medicine, Universidade de Lisboa, Avenida Professor Egas Moniz MB, Lisboa, 1649-028, Portugal.

Aims: Multiple prediction score models have been validated to predict major adverse events in patients with heart failure. However, these scores do not include variables related to the type of follow-up. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of a protocol-based follow-up programme of patients with heart failure regarding scores accuracy for predicting hospitalizations and mortality occurring during the first year after hospital discharge.

Paraneoplastic neurological syndromes (PNS) include any symptomatic and non-metastatic neurological manifestations associated with a neoplasm. PNS associated with antibodies against intracellular antigens, known as "high-risk" antibodies, show frequent association with underlying cancer. PNS associated with antibodies against neural surface antigens, known as "intermediate- or low-risk" antibodies, are less frequently associated with cancer.

Article Synopsis
  • A lipidomic analysis using non-targeted LC-MS/MS was performed on post-mortem human brain samples from middle-aged individuals, including those with and without Alzheimer’s disease (AD) symptoms, to identify lipid fingerprints.
  • The study found that white matter (WM) exhibits a unique lipid profile that is more resistant to damage compared to grey matter (GM), displaying lower fatty acid unsaturation and higher ether lipid content.
  • As Alzheimer's disease progresses, significant changes in lipid profiles occur, particularly in the WM, affecting functions related to cell membranes, energy production, antioxidant defense, and bioactive lipids, which may worsen the condition of neurons and glial cells.

Objective: Children and adolescents with adiposity excess are at increased risk of future cardiovascular (CV) disease. Fat accumulation promotes the development of elevated blood pressure (BP) and arterial stiffness, two main determinants of CV risk which are strongly inter-related. We aimed at investigating whether the association between overweight and arterial stiffness, taken at different arterial segments, is mediated by increased BP or is BP-independent.
