Obesity is a troubling public health problem as it increases risks of sleep disorders, respiratory complications, systemic arterial hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and metabolic syndrome (MetS). As a measure to counteract comorbidities associated with severe obesity, bariatric surgery stands out. This study aimed to investigate the adiponectin/leptin ratio in women with severe obesity with and without MetS who had undergone Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) and to characterize the biochemical, glucose, and inflammatory parameters of blood in women with severe obesity before and after RYGB.

Background: Obesity remains a public health problem worldwide. The high prevalence of this condition in the population raises further concerns, considering that comorbidities are often associated with obesity. Among the comorbidities closely associated with obesity, metabolic syndrome (MS) is particularly important, which potentially increases the risk of manifestation of other disorders, such as the prothrombotic and systemic pro-inflammatory states.

Mice subjected to morphine locomotor sensitization develop increased anxiety-behavior expression during protracted morphine withdrawal. This behavioral change is dependent on reexposure to the context of locomotor sensitization and reflects a state of conditioned anxiety. In this study, the effect of memory reconsolidation on the expression of conditioned anxiety in mice with protracted morphine withdrawal was examined.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) essential oil (EO) has a long history of use in emotional illness, including anxiety disorders. Cognitive mechanisms of learning and memory play a pivotal role in the etiology and maintenance of anxiety since exposure to cues related to aversive situations induces high arousal and anticipatory anxiety. Memory become labile after its reactivation and can be modulated by reconsolidation or extinction.

Contextual memory plays an important role in development and maintenance of drug addiction. However, little is known about of the role contextual memory in the emergence of a negative emotional state in the withdrawal period. Therefore, this study investigated anxiety-like behavior in acute and protracted morphine withdrawal of mice submitted to a locomotor sensitization protocol and the influence of contextual memory on this behavior.

Objectives: We aimed to identify serum level variations in protein-derived peptides between patients diagnosed with gastric adenocarcinoma (GAC) and non-cancer persons (control) to detect the activity changes of proteases and explore the auxiliary diagnostic value in the context of GAC physiopathology.
Methods: The label-free quantitative peptidome approach was applied to identify variants in serum levels of peptides that can differentiate GAC patients from the control group. Peptide sequences were submitted against Proteasix tool predicting proteases potentially involved in their generation.

Introduction: Gastric emptying (GE) and food tolerance (FT) can be altered after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) has been performed, especially when it involved the use of a restrictive mechanism (such as a silastic ring).
Aim: To assess GE and FT in patients who underwent banded (BRYGB) or non-banded Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB).
Methods: Forty-seven BRYGB patients and 47 RYGB patients underwent gastric emptying scintigraphy (GES) and FT assessment (by means of a questionnaire) between 6 months and 2 years postoperatively.
Objectives: A multicenter, noninterventional, observational study was conducted in the Latin American countries including Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, and Venezuela to assess the prevalence of liver and cardiac iron overload using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with chronic anemias except thalassemia.
Methods: Patients aged >10 years with transfusion-dependent anemias, except thalassemia, either with <20 units of red blood cell (RBC) transfusions with serum ferritin (SF) levels >2000 ng/mL or with ≥20 units of RBC transfusions regardless of SF level in their lifetime, were enrolled. Iron overload was assessed using MRI.

Background: Obesity is a worldwide disease related to genetic, environmental, and behavioral factors, and it is associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality. Recently, obesity has been characterized by a low-grade inflammatory state known as inflammome indicated by chronic increases in circulating concentrations of inflammatory markers. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of weight loss induced by surgery for obesity and weight-related diseases on pro-inflammatory cytokine (TNF-α) and anti-inflammatory adipokine (adiponectin) levels, and on an adipose-derived hormone (leptin) in severely obese subjects.

Although the current treatment for anxiety is effective, it promotes a number of adverse reactions and medical interactions. Inhaled essential oils have a prominent action on the central nervous system, with minimal systemic effects, primarily because of reduced systemic bioavailability. The effects of drugs on the consolidation of fear conditioning reflects its clinical efficacy in preventing a vicious cycle of anticipatory anxiety leading to fearful cognition and anxiety symptoms.

The minimally invasive surgery for gastric cancer in Brazil has begun about two years after the first laparoscopic gastrectomy (LG) performed by Kitano in Japan, in 1991. Although the report of first surgeries shows the year of 1993, there was no dissemination of the technique until the years 2010. At that time with the improvement of optical devices, laparoscopic instruments and with the publications coming from Asia, several Brazilian surgeons felt encouraged to go to Korea and Japan to learn the standardization of the LG.
