Background: Medications currently used to treat pain are frequently associated with serious adverse effects and rapid development of tolerance. Thus, there is a need to develop more effective, and safer medicines for the population. Blocking NMDA receptors (NMDAR) has shown to be a promising target for the development of new drugs.

Background: This analysis compared effects of the activin signaling inhibitor, sotatercept, across pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) subgroups stratified by baseline cardiac index (CI).
Methods: Pooled data from PULSAR (N=106; NCT03496207) and STELLAR (N=323; NCT04576988) were analyzed using two different CI thresholds, < and ≥ 2.0 L/min/m or 2.
Purpose: To evaluate the gender distribution of first and last authors with Brazilian surgical affiliations in PubMed-indexed surgical journals.
Methods: Data from eligible surgical journals were retrieved using Scimago Journal & Country Rank 2021 and manually reviewed. Manuscripts published from 2018 to 2022 were included if at least one author was affiliated with a Brazilian institution and a surgical specialty.

Background: The Abdominal Compartment Society (WSACS) established consensus definitions and recommendations for the management of intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH) and abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS) in 2006, and they were last updated in 2013. The WSACS conducted an international survey between 2022 and 2023 to seek the agreement of healthcare practitioners (HCPs) worldwide on current and new candidate statements that may be used for future guidelines.
Methods: A self-administered, online cross-sectional survey was conducted under the auspices of the WSACS to assess the level of agreement among HCPs over current and new candidate statements.

Trace metals are indispensable nutritional factors for all living organisms. During host-pathogen interactions, they serve as crucial resources that dictate infection outcomes. Accordingly, the host uses a defense strategy known as nutritional immunity, which relies on coordinated metal chelation to mitigate bacterial advances.

Purpose: The objective of this study was to describe potential working portals positioned directly over the extensor carpi ulnaris (ECU) tendon and assess their safety in relation to the dorsal branch of the ulnar nerve (DBUN).
Methods: A descriptive anatomical study was conducted on 15 fresh human cadaver upper limbs. Five distinct portals over the ECU were examined, and the shortest distances from these portals to the DBUN were measured.

Breast cancer is the leading cancer type among women globally, and its chemotherapy often results in multiple side effects, compromising the patient's quality of life. Our study aimed to analyze the impact of neoadjuvant chemotherapy on the quality of life in Brazilian women with breast cancer within the public health system. This research was a one-year, observational, longitudinal study, conducted at a charitable health facility, examining the effect of neoadjuvant chemotherapy on these women's quality of life.

Objective: Home blood pressure (BP) variability (BPV) and BP phenotypes such as white-coat hypertension (WCH), white-coat uncontrolled hypertension (WUCH), masked hypertension (MH) and masked uncontrolled hypertension (MUCH) are predictors of adverse cardiovascular events. This study compared home BPV across BP phenotypes built from abnormal office BP (OBP) and home BP monitoring (HBPM) thresholds defined by three distinct societies [European Society of Hypertension (ESH): OBP ≥ 140/90 mmHg and HBPM ≥ 135/85 mmHg; American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association (ACC/AHA): OBP and HBPM ≥ 130/80 mmHg and Brazilian Society of Cardiology (BSC): OBP ≥ 140/90 mmHg and HBPM ≥ 130/80 mmHg].
Methods: This cross-sectional study evaluated 51 194 treated (37% men, age = 61 ± 15 years) and 56 100 untreated (41% men, age = 54 ± 16 years) individuals from 1045 Brazilian centers who underwent OBP and HBPM measurements.

Background: The mitral annular plane systolic excursion (MAPSE) is used to analyze the left ventricle longitudinal function. However, the accuracy of MAPSE in diagnosing oncological populations is unclear. In this study, we aimed to assess the accuracy of MAPSE in diagnosing subclinical cardiotoxicity in women with breast cancer undergoing anthracycline treatment.

Background: Priming strategies that improve the functionality of MSCs may be required to address issues limiting successful clinical translation of MSC therapies. For conditions requiring high trophic support such as brain and spinal cord injuries, priming MSCs to produce higher levels of trophic factors may be instrumental to facilitate translation of current MSC therapies. We developed and tested a novel molecular priming paradigm using docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) to prime adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (ASCs) to enhance the secretome neuroregulatory potential.
