Balloon pulmonary angioplasty in patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension: short- and long-term results from a cohort in Brazil.

Objective: A significant number of patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) are not eligible for pulmonary endarterectomy and may be treated with balloon pulmonary angioplasty (BPA). Although BPA programs have recently been developed in Brazil, no results have yet been published. The objective of this study was to assess the clinical and hemodynamic progression of the first patients treated with BPA at our center.

Abortion-related complications in Brazil: results from the World Health Organization Multi-country Survey on Abortion (MCS-A).

This study aimed to describe the severity of abortion-related complications, factors associated with complications, the types of management and the experience of care in Brazil. A cross-sectional study in twenty hospitals (10 in Federal District, 3 in Rondônia and 7 in Maranhão). For 3 months, all women treated for abortion/miscarriage had their data collected.

Predictors of drooling severity in people with Parkinson's disease.

Background: Drooling, defined as the unintentional loss of saliva from the anterior oral cavity, remains poorly understood in terms of the underlying clinical factors in people with Parkinson's disease (PwP). This study aims to clarify these factors by analyzing predictors and secondarily the correlates with the severity of drooling in PwP.

Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study involving 42 PwP with drooling and 59 without drooling.

Vascularized Periosteal Grafts for Bone Union in Children: A Systematic Review.

Background: The periosteum is the main organ responsible for bone regeneration. Vascularized Periosteal Grafts (VPG) have demonstrated exceptional efficacy and speed in facilitating bone union among children with challenging bone healing conditions. Despite their promising results, the overall impact of these interventions has yet to be comprehensively evaluated through systematic review.

Association between nursing workload and staff size with the occurrence of adverse events and deaths of patients with COVID-19: A retrospective cohort study.

Background: The safety of patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) is significantly impacted by inadequate staffing of nursing professionals to meet the demand for care of critically ill patients. COVID-19 patients increased nurses' workload, particularly in high-intensity care settings like the ICU.

Aim: To evaluate the association of workload and number of patients per nursing professional with the occurrence of adverse events and death in critically ill patients with COVID-19 in the ICU.

Neuroendoscopic surgery versus craniotomy for basal ganglia hemorrhage: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

Basal ganglia hemorrhage (BGH) is a prevalent site for intracerebral hemorrhage. Although neuroendoscopy (NE) surgery has emerged as a less invasive alternative to craniotomy (CT), the optimal surgical method remains debatable. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of NE versus CT in the management of BGH.

Background: Spinal immobilization, a widely used trauma prehospital intervention, is known to cause discomfort, yet little is known about interventions to reduce this discomfort.

Objective: This scoping review aims to evaluate prehospital interventions to reduce discomfort from spinal immobilization in adult trauma patients.

Method: This scoping review assessed prehospital pharmacological and nonpharmacological interventions to address discomfort from spinal immobilization in adult trauma patients.

McGrath MAC Versus Three-Dimensional Printed Video Laryngoscopes: A Randomized, Manikin-Simulated Noninferiority Controlled Study with Medical Students.

Background: Proficiency in endotracheal intubation (ETI) is essential for medical professionals and its training should start at medical schools; however, large caseload may be required before achieving an acceptable success rate with direct laryngoscopy. Video laryngoscopy has proven to be an easier alternative for intubation with a faster learning curve, but its availability in medical training may be an issue due to its high market prices. We devised a low-cost 3-dimensionally printed video laryngoscope (3DVL) and performed a randomized trial to evaluate if the intubation success rate on the first attempt with this device is noninferior to a standard commercially available video laryngoscope (STVL).

ASSESSMENT OF SATISFACTION IN PATIENTS UNDERGOING SURGICAL TREATMENT BY THE WALANT TECHNIQUE.

Objective: To analyze the satisfaction of patients who underwent hand surgical treatment with the wide-awake local anesthesia no tourniquet (WALANT) anesthesia technique.

Methods: This is a cross-sectional study on the satisfaction of patients who underwent hand surgical treatment with the WALANT technique. These patients were treated at the Hand and Microsurgery outpatient clinic of a public hospital from March 2020 to March 2022.

Real-World Treatment Outcomes of an Artificial Tear Containing Arabinogalactan, Hyaluronic Acid and Trehalose Among Subjects with Dry Eye.

Purpose: To assess the efficacy, adherence, and tolerability of a new artificial tear based on arabinogalactan, hyaluronic acid, and trehalose in a population with dry eye disease (DED).

Methods: A retrospective, real-world, post-marketing study identified 96 adult patients (aged 18-80 years) with signs and symptoms of dry eye. These patients received fixed combination therapy with eye drops containing arabinogalactan, hyaluronic acid, and trehalose at various dosing schedules.

Acute kidney injury in critically ill COVID-19 patients in a tertiary hospital: short and long-term kidney and patient outcomes.

Introduction: Acute kidney injury (AKI) in the setting of COVID-19 is associated with worse clinical and renal outcomes, with limited long-term data.

Aim: To evaluate critically ill COVID-19 patients with AKI that required nephrologist consultation (NC-AKI) in a tertiary hospital.

Methods: Prospective single-center cohort of critically ill COVID-19 adult patients with NC-AKI from May 1st, 2020, to April 30th, 2021.

Newborn screening in Brazil: realities and challenges.

Neonatal screening is a critical public health initiative introduced worldwide to detect severe congenital disorders early in life. This study provides an updated overview of public neonatal screening in Brazil, highlighting the transition from initial pilot projects to a robust national program. Through the analysis of recent data up to 2023, we discuss the coverage and regional efficiencies of the program.

Persisting Gaps in Cytomegalovirus Prevention and Management After Solid Organ Transplantation in a Resource-Limited Setting.

Background: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection remains among the leading complications after solid organ transplantation (SOT). Large international surveys mainly focused on high-income countries, detected considerable variability in the management of this infection after SOT. Limited data are available from resource-limited settings.

DOMINÓ Registry: study protocol on mineral and bone disease (DOença MINeral e Óssea) of chronic kidney disease in pediatrics in Brazil.

Introduction: Pediatric patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) develop mineral and bone disorders (MBD). We do not have Brazilian data that evaluate these outcomes, which can be obtained through epidemiological records.

Objective: To present the DOMINÓ study, which aims to describe CKD-MBD characteristics in Brazilian pediatric patients.
