Purpose Of Review: Trabecular bone score (TBS) is a lumbar spine dual-energy absorptiometry texture index which provides information on skeletal quality partially independent of bone mineral density (BMD). A body of work has emerged demonstrating the relationship between TBS and fracture risk, with lower TBS values associated with increased risk for osteoporotic fracture in postmenopausal women and older men. TBS is derived from standard DXA images; however, the information provided by TBS is complementary to that provided by BMD.

Background: Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs (ASPs) have been promoted to optimize antimicrobial usage and patient outcomes, and to reduce the emergence of antimicrobial-resistant organisms. However, the best strategies for an ASP are not definitively established and are likely to vary based on local culture, policy, and routine clinical practice, and probably limited resources in middle-income countries. The aim of this study is to evaluate structures and resources of antimicrobial stewardship teams (ASTs) in surgical departments from different regions of the world.

Background And Study Aims: Buried bumper syndrome is an infrequent complication of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) that can result in tube dysfunction, gastric perforation, bleeding, peritonitis or death. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of different PEG tube removal methods in the management of buried bumper syndrome in a large retrospective cohort.
Patients And Methods: From 2002 to 2013, 82 cases of buried bumper syndrome were identified from the databases of two endoscopy referral centers.

Chronic kidney disease and hyperuricemia have been associated to an increased risk and a worse prognosis in acute ischemic stroke. Several mechanisms, including platelet dysfunction, coagulation disorders, endothelial dysfunction, inflammation, and an increased risk of atrial fibrillation could be implicated. The role of serum uric acid in this setting is still object of debate.

Zenker's diverticulum is a form of esophageal and pharyngeal obstruction located at the Killian-Laimer triangle. It is relatively common in elderly man (seventh or eighth decade of life), and its pathophysiology is not completely understood, albeit theories regarding dysfunction of the upper esophageal sphincter were reported. The main symptoms are dysphagia and odynophagia, but it can complicate to aspiration and perforation of the pharyngeal pouch; also, it can be asymptomatic.

Background Acute pancreatitis is the most common complication after ERCP, occurring in about 4 % of the procedures. Only the placement of pancreatic duct prosthesis and the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have shown benefit in the prevention of post-ERCP pancreatitis (PEP). Although the benefit of rectal administration of indomethacin or diclofenac is recommended by some studies and society guidelines especially in a selected group of high-risk patients, there is so far, no standardization of time or route of NSAID administration.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of hypopituitarism in the acute stage after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) as well at the chronic stage, at least 1 year after bleeding, to assess its implications and correlation with clinical features of the studied population.
Patients And Methods: This was a prospective cohort study that evaluated patients admitted between December 2009 and May 2011 with a diagnosis of SAH secondary to cerebral aneurysm rupture. Clinical and endocrine assessment was performed during the acute stage after hospital admission and before treatment at a mean of 7.

In the heart, tissue-derived signals play a central role on recruiting/activating stem cell sources to induce cardiac lineage specification for maintenance of tissue homeostasis and repair. Cardiac resident stromal cells (CRSCs) may play a pivotal role in cardiac repair throughout their secretome. Here, we performed the characterization of CRSCs and their secretome by analyzing the composition of their culture-derived extracellular matrix (ECM) and conditioned medium (CM) and by investigating their potential effect on adipose-derived stem cell (ADSC) and progenitor cell behavior.

The presence of the appendix within a femoral hernia (FH) sac is known as Garengeot's hernia (GH). We report on current study a rare case of an elderly man with a combined inguinal and Garengeot's hernia and discuss the clinical aspects. An 82-year-old man clinically stable, presented history of pain at the right inguinal region for over a week, without vomit, nausea, fever or any alteration of intestinal or urinary eliminations.

Purpose: The hypoxia and reoxygenation cycles in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) cause a change in the oxidative balance, leading to the formation of reactive oxygen species capable of reacting with other organic molecules impairing their functions. This study aimed to determine the best markers of oxidative stress in OSAS and what better antioxidant agent to be used to treat the disease.
Methods: Searches were conducted in three different databases (PubMed, LILACS, SCIELO), using as descriptors the terms obstructive sleep apnea, oxidative stress, and antioxidant therapy.

Background: Chronic urticaria can be the initial clinical presentation of a number of different diseases. The objective of the present study was to report the associated diseases during a ten-year clinical-laboratory follow-up in patients with an initial diagnosis of chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) of unknown cause.
Methods: A prospective, longitudinal cohort study with a ten-year clinical-laboratory follow-up was conducted.

Background: Dyspepsia is highly prevalent and easily assessed in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD) and is not a traditional predictor of malnutrition. We sought to establish an association between dyspeptic symptoms and nutritional status in ESRD patients undergoing maintenance HD.
Methods: We studied 106 ESRD patients on HD.

Objective: To estimate the diagnostic accuracy of signal intensity of the lesion-to-spinal cord ratio (LSR) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) in diffusion-weighted (DW) magnetic resonance imaging of pulmonary nodules suspicious for lung cancer in granulomatous lung disease-endemic regions.
Methods: Forty-nine patients with indeterminate solitary pulmonary nodules detected by chest computed tomography and histopathologically confirmed diagnoses were included in the study. DW images were analysed semiquantitatively by focusing regions of interest on the lesion and spinal cord at the same level (for LSR calculation).

Background: In type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) management, enhancing health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is as important as good metabolic control and prevention of secondary complications. This study aims to evaluate possible regional differences in HRQoL, demographic features and clinical characteristics of patients with T1DM in Brazil, a country of continental proportions, as well as investigate which variables could influence the HRQoL of these individuals and contribute to these regional disparities.
Methods: This was a retrospective, cross-sectional, multicenter study performed by the Brazilian Type 1 Diabetes Study Group (BrazDiab1SG), by analyzing EuroQol scores from 3005 participants with T1DM, in 28 public clinics, among all geographical regions of Brazil.
